More impossible than ever, as I knew it would be, so gut vote this time is Parallel Lines, because it was my most played that year and maybe the next, still plays itself in my head, a vivid, poised sound and vision---think this is the one where xgau, then at his peak, mentioned "lives lived intensely on the surface," Hey Blondie: "All I want is a picture in my wallet/A small resemblance of something more solid/All I want/Is a picture of youuu." Deep enough, ditto "Fade Away and Radiate"---Top Ten of course Beefheart, Ubu, Television, Funkadelic, Willie, Chic, Mingus etc etc etc.
This Year's Model always had sort of a popological laboratory quality overall---not mad scientist, more detached or over-obviously concerned with precision----overall, that is, despite, lots of individually enjoyable, even sing-along tracks. Maybe it's just me. Stopped following him when he got too prolific for my budget, which was right away.
Street Legal is the most appalling Dylan album I've heard, though "Changing of the Guard's homeless rainbow brain stew imagery is a keeper for the case history, and overall you can tell he's gonna need Jesus or something. Does have some very nice arrangements, though mostly dead drums ("New Pony" the most deftly played overall, pert vocal, though lyrics seem to be about pony porn? Jeez.)

homeless rainbow brain stew imagery

Haha this is so true re: Changing of the Guards.

It's interesting that NME ranked Peter Gabriel 2 so highly. That album gets a lot of hate from a lot of places, but I think it's one of his best.

J. Sam, Friday, 29 March 2019 15:37 (five years ago) link

I thought that was the one everyone loved

3 is probably the most popular and acclaimed of the early albums. It's def my favourite. 1 had a huge hit in "Solsbury Hill". 2 falls through the cracks a bit.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Monday, 1 April 2019 11:35 (five years ago) link

My 80s lists arent that great, esp the early 80s lists are tiny I should update them as you go along and add the albums I dont have.
I dont think I put much effort into them and only did top 20s.

I can't believe you didn't include Robin Trower's Caravan to Midnight; burn this hellsite to the ground!!

days of rags and noses (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 1 April 2019 18:09 (five years ago) link

(j/k I surprised myself by voting Third over Modern Dance; this is a rad list)

Either Eno or Wire, I suppose. Not an annus mirabilis.

Dan S, Monday, 1 April 2019 23:07 (five years ago) link

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 00:52 (five years ago) link

will have to listen to Systems of Romance, not sure I ever heard it.

the top 10 are mostly albums I considered voting for

also almost went with Throbbing Gristle

loved the Pere Ubu, Television, The Jam, Patti Smith, PIL, No New York albums

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 01:00 (five years ago) link

PiL getting no votes is a surprise to me.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 01:02 (five years ago) link

Welcome to ILM.

Wait, is ILM known to be a bastion of Steve Reich aficionados? I'm happy to see this in any case.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:19 (five years ago) link

cool results

1st PIL kinda sucks imo, not much there

I could have just as easily voted Music For Airports instead of DOA but the post punk explosion is already in full effect here, plus the height of disco and fuckin Fela, what a year

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 04:06 (five years ago) link

Didn't see that one coming tbh.

Angry Question Time Man's Flute Club Band (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 06:46 (five years ago) link

I've quietly voted in several of these. I think this is the first year where my choice was the winner.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 12:21 (five years ago) link

Wow, can't believe Reich (who I voted for) won.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 13:08 (five years ago) link

Kind of a weak year for albums, tbh.

o. nate, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 15:01 (five years ago) link

Great #1 and #3.

I would have given Goblin's other record this year (the one about the cockroach called Mark) a shout but was thinking it was '79.

Armand Frippanino (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 18:08 (five years ago) link

No, great #2!

dorsalstop, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 21:52 (five years ago) link

was so sure this would have been between Blondie and Devo
