willem, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:09 (fifteen years ago) link

the deakin mix is actually really well put together.

braveclub, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:10 (fifteen years ago) link

yup.
sounds great, looks great (proper effort in the packaging !), reads great.
perfect for those of us who dont hunt out the limited 12" issues and wants to hear what this groove is all about.
i also love the way that fred writes his mixes up.
he did the same for triptych - makes the mix all the more personal

If you buy the Deakin Mix from iTunes I think you get unmixed versions of all the tracks too.

OMG Aeroplane live OMG

They were so good! When they were playing their own and similar stuff (Mungolian Jet Set remix of "Moon River", Tensnake remix of "I'll Be By Your Side" etc.) it was like the entire dancefloor was enveloped in a giant bubble of E. It was very deliberately populist and untasteful too - "Love Is In The Air", "Happy Together", "Heaven Is In The Backseat Of My Cadillac", plus a great bootleg of "God Only Knows" over melodramatic schaffel. All subjected to ridiculous amounts of EQ trickery. Also I liked how genuinely into the camp aspects of their aesthetic they are. As only one played at a time the other would be in the audience jumping up and down and getting everyone to sing along to their words of their own remixes (MGMT, Cut Copy, The Shortwave Set) with absolute unselfconsciousness. I was impressed, too, by the enthusiasm of the crowd, which I had initially thought was a lot of post-work revellers at the gig only by coincidence. But no, everyone seemed to recognise the Aeroplane tracks (mind you it's not hard to), and half the crowd ended up singing along to "Your Love". I was most disturbed by a small crowd of fine-looking young homosexual men who appeared to know every word of Matias Aguayo's "Minimal".

Tim F, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:07 (fifteen years ago) link

jealous!!

max, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Also based on the Resident Advisor description of the track I'm pretty sure they played Patrice Baumel's "Roar" - RA says it sounds more like a lawnmower revving up and conking out over and over again, and that is exactly what this massive track was like. In effect it was a bit like "Doppelwhipper" - massive crowd response.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:22 (fifteen years ago) link

That Fred Deaking Nu-Balearica comp looks like it'd be pretty excellent in this style.

this is great!

20 jfg put up "Don't turn away from my love" by lovelock, who is steve moore from zombi, apparently it comes out on cosmic balearic beats vol.1 in september from eskimo with coyote in flagranti maelstrom and others... looks bonerific

san frandisco, Saturday, 23 August 2008 23:48 (fifteen years ago) link

oh damnit i knew i shoulda went to aeroplane!!

haitch, Sunday, 24 August 2008 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Best part of the Aeroplane set was when one of them dropped Robin S's "Show Me Love" and drew a comparatively muted response from the crowd - the look he gave everyone was of confused astonishment, like "WTF is wrong with you this are best track ever!"

Tim F, Monday, 25 August 2008 05:24 (fifteen years ago) link

lol read 'lovelock' as 'pipecock'

deej, Monday, 25 August 2008 08:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Tim - 'Roar' is a bit like a whole record built around the chainsaw noise in Mouth To Mouth but kind of... bigger and wider. And no kick drum.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 August 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

So yeah, probably the same track.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 August 2008 17:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i read about that 'roar' track. pretty crazy http://www.myspace.com/patricebaumel

jaxon, Monday, 25 August 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I've tracked down "Roar" in the intervening time. A bit hard to sustain itself on its own but what a great track in the mix. Aeroplane kept on mixing back in and out of the fucked up section for about six minutes or so.

Tim F, Monday, 25 August 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

gosh : moshi moshi get on board the nu-balearic groove by getting AMO1 a gig :

joost666, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

finally got around to giving the new WEWW 12"s i bought a listen, love laughing light of plenty track "the rose." it gives you a real feel for how Thom contributed to the MOA project, also it gives off a woolfy vs. projections vibe.

the dr. dunks album is more laid-back balearic, subtle developments over slow grooves with etherial piano dripped over the top and ambient synth add to the atmosphere. lovin it

san frandisco, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

that's for "the phone," love savage introduces a balearic synth-poppy vibe next to grinding guitars and more jarring textures in the middle, both amazing though

san frandisco, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

you listen to too much music

beta, i pre-ordered them from phonica a few days before they came out. i think they sold out that day and piccadilly sold out even sooner. discogs has them selling, but for mucho $$$$

san frandisco, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha ha "Everything Is Neu". Still waiting for a band to call themselves "Neu Order".

Meanwhile I got the Fred Deakin mix - it is an neverending cup of overflowing goodness. Really nails that sense of floating equilibrium that Peter Visti gets on his best mixes - total dancing in zero gravity material.
