Xxp No ones claiming that though, obviously the left like the right contains a coalition of different groups with their own variously conflicting or complimentary agendas. Intersectionality and solidarity are absolutely worthy ideals but shit like that recent vanity fair Bernie article or criticisms of Ilhan Omar for supposed anti semitism make it clear to me that identity politics are often used cynically, as a cudgel against the left by liberals and the right.

Cultural conservatism would imply to me being pro life, anti gay, antifeminist and reactionary on a whole host of other issues that we are dealing with in America none of which they are.

dsb, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

Red Scare also pro-Israel from a "you know, different ethnic groups just have cultural differences!" pov, doesn't get much more socially conservative than that.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

ableism is culturally conservative

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:41 (four years ago) link

Khachian has made it clear multiple times that the only reason she isn’t a tradwife is that nobody seems to want to marry her.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

i like cumtown bc its just completely owns up to its own stupidity/immaturity; it's like early-00s teen culture, 95% of the cultural references are to movies that came out when i was 11. but the combo of that style of humour with earnest political opinions in chapo or red scare makes me cringe

flopson, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link

Blaming Chapo for Red Scare is like blaming Dave Chappelle for Mind of Mencia

space invaders are smokin penises!!!! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

i think chapo were innovative on the 'its ok to say retard in a leftist podcast' front and can be blamed for that, but red scare def innovated into new grounds of 'its ok to just actually be right wing on a leftist podcast'

flopson, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

and also CTH cleaned up their act in that respect a while ago

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

... have any of the Chapos said retard?

For all the "white socialist bros who hate idpol" stereotypes that characterization applies mostly to Amber and a little to Matt. Will/Felix/Virgil aren't really in that camp at all.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:31 (four years ago) link

The language and jokes were, uh, quite a bit looser in the earlier run of episodes for sure.

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:36 (four years ago) link

racist version of retard is preferable to dirtbags

every cop I've ever seen who's merked a pleading and unarmed person looks like this, the same boyish mongoloids who wash out of BJJ gyms because it's too hard and get Punisher bullshit on their ARs

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 17:36 (four years ago) link

lol Red Scare are absolutely anti-feminist but in the same way as Khachiyan's idol Paglia where they mix in a few reasonable criticisms of modern liberalism with a whole lot of reactionary nonsense. like their current bit is "Louis CK did nothing wrong!"

and Nagle is quoted in that twitter thread as wanting the left to be more socially conservative and praising Sargon of Akkad, her politics are basically Strasserite

there are absolutely valid criticisms of the way the liberals cynically use identity politics as a weapon against the left but this isn't the criticism that most anti-idpol 'leftist' types focus on, Brad is otm about those just being anti-PC concern trolling.

ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 18:28 (four years ago) link

Matt and Virgil is the worst Chapo combo.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

when they're sincere (concern about the climate apocalypse being a "bourgeois eschatology" or Tim Faust's gauche "Abortion Rules!" t-shirt).

what a joke

goole, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:19 (four years ago) link

also What Is Up with the australian socialist who posts 100% about Bernie in a Red Scare mode and 0 about anything happening in australia

although really why let these people take up any mental real estate, is the question

goole, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

you mean the one who tweets like she's writing a pithy academic treatise on online political discourse consisting of nothing but ten dollar words?

really bad account

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

yeah

goole, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

not gonna lie I laughed at the Beltway Garage song, I felt like I had heard 80% of the episode before though.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

xp I mean, I don't follow her and the times I've peeked at her full stream of tweets have been painful, but some drive-by gawking at things that have been retweeted is entertaining in a "wow, why would you do that" way

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 20:45 (four years ago) link

the thing her tweeting reminds me most of was the time I was going to this talk where one of the panel speakers was a guy who had translated Deleuze & Guattari works to english and I was scared he'd talk like that and I'd have to spend too much time trying to parse his words

then he showed up and was like "hey guys nice to be here on the panel!" and spoke like a normal person

twitter is conversational and people who act like it's not are nuts

concern about the climate apocalypse being a "bourgeois eschatology"

Dasha talking about the joys of fainting in public or Anna going on and on about how hot the Boston Bomber is, no one is taking this as life advice, and they're not turning anyone over to the right wing.

C’mon you know that’s not what most people find objectionable about RS.

No I don't... who are most people and what do they find objectionable about RS? fat-shaming? saying retard? being a tradwife? I thought I pulled some good examples. calling fear of a climate apocalypse "bourgeois eschatology" has gotta be up there. I mean as usual it just seems like a lot of people (not necessarily itt) are either jealous or annoyed that something they don't like is becoming popular. and like I said, they're not surrounded by a cult like Peterson or Hannity. so.... what's the damage? they are easy to ignore.

the praxis girl video is v funny

how did this most recent harrumph re: RS get started anyway? am I missing something they said off the pod?

Lots of things are easy to ignore but they're still annoying.

Their doubling down on defending sex offenders and creeps and dismissing/belittling people’s concerns about them as “neoliberal hysteria” or whatever. That’s the truly heinous shit IMO

Not sure of the exact sequence of events but the gist is that a female comedian was voicing her objections on Twitter about Louis CK playing at a festival on and the RS gals and their reply army chimed in with their idiocy and etc etc etc

The absolute madmen, they actually did it

BONUS: The Marianne Williamson Interview

"reply army"... christ

flappy bird, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:15 (four years ago) link

i feel like anna used to be good at twitter

flopson, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:18 (four years ago) link

She was, though a large part of that is probably that she posted so infrequently. She has become a parodic blend of Paglia and Nassim Taleb.

xp, it wasn’t just defending CK, she was going through the whole schtick about neoliberal feminism demanding safe spaces, etc, to a comedian who’d complained about being sexually harassed in the past and who objected to clubs booking known sex pests. Get over it! Comedy clubs aren’t a real workplace!

You can’t judge a podcast by its listeners but there were huge numbers of people (comparatively, for a show with under 3000 Patreon patrons) jumping in to attack the comedian as unattractive, hysterical, etc.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 06:36 (four years ago) link

Yes, but when that army isn't attacking you it's easy to ignore.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 07:53 (four years ago) link

Marianne Williamson comes off as an interesting, well-spoken but not really convincing figure in that interview. I'm glad they did it cause she's genuinely unique, but I'd be surprised if they kept talking about her all that much in the future. They're not wrong to say she's one of a small number of candidates presenting a vision for change, but her actual pitch doesn't support much scrutiny.

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 08:01 (four years ago) link

That said, I'm kinda glad they shunned Gravel but went for her instead

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 08:02 (four years ago) link

Is she the anti-vaccine one?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 08:05 (four years ago) link

Apparently she supports mandatory vaccines "when they're called for", whatever that means. (it didn't come up in the interview.)

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 08:10 (four years ago) link

you know, for diseases that are really bad
(insert your own logic on which ones qualify)

mh, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link

I feel like flappy keeps saying well it's silly people are just reacting to X and c'mon that's not a big deal but so your examples of X really make it seem like they are horrible

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:25 (four years ago) link

ha they were on their best behavior with Marianne Williamson. She comes off as less of a joke than I thought. To the point that I could see her havoing a moment at the debates.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:38 (four years ago) link

they were overpowered by the radiant light of her orb

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:40 (four years ago) link

I was with her until she got to the "socialism is just when the state does things like make a police force, I am smart and have read a lot of Marx" and from there I found it tough to take her seriously

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 13:45 (four years ago) link

why didn't they ask about this? did the interview tape before she made that statement?

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link

Possibly, but they were really more interested in asking her wtf her "politics of love" is about and how it relates to socialism/social justice more broadly than in individual policies/positions

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link

for how edgy they are they tend to be pretty softball interviewers but I guess they mostly have friends or ppl they like on

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link

"politics of love"

maybe i should just listen to the podcast cause this sounds like warmed-over corey booker-esque horseshit.

ogmor, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link

she's definitely more serious/interesting than most of the Democratic field but a) the bar is very low and b) she just as definitely wallpapers over a lot of hard questions with flowery rhetoric and her easy-to-listen-to delivery of said rhetoric.
