And I don’t just mean bands that aren’t my taste, I mean bands that sound really amateurish and underpracticed.

Lol. I’ve never sponsored any content or bought a promotion on social media but I’ve def spammed the world with my undercooked music. No shame!

at a venue with assigned seating, when people get busted for sitting in seats that are better than their assigned seats, and they have to do this play-act like they made a mistake instead of intentionally trying to get away with sitting in better seats

anyone getting caught for a minor crime in public is always irrationally embarrassing.

awhile back a woman in line ahead of me at the grocery store was caught trying to sneak turmeric root (which she'd taken from sealed boxes) into bags of loose ginger root, and it was excruciating. a clerk saw the turmeric, asked another clerk to do a price check on the turmeric root, he came back with the box in question and confronted her, she "thought she was allowed to do that" (that = allowed to open sealed boxes and sneak it out in another product). it was the worst (also sort of the best).

xp I have seen an increase in this (sponsored Insta and Facebook posts) in the past month or so. Part of it, I suspect, is "the algorithm" and its continued repression of artists, venues, and promoters using their platforms for free advertising. ... I do feel like there is a difference in terms of "embarrassment" when I see someone post about their shows or their music vs. buying ads. Like, the latter is a bit embarrassing to me. ... To me, it gives off the vibe of "lol you have money and no friends" which, in the context of band aesthetics is the least cool thing.

patriotic british celebrities are fucking mortifying

Sorry to tweet about politics - I’m trying not to - but I look at the news in the morning and I’m sickened by what has happened to our country. It’s a great place, about to be ruined by absolute charlatans.

yeah it's the "sponsored" part that makes me IE here, tbc

Like basically thinking about the fact that this shitty band has a "social media marketing strategy" that they actively thought about and then spent money on.

Any mystifying promoted tweet with 2 likes makes me cringe. Though I would feel worse if they were successful.

two weeks pass...

when a performer with a stage name becomes a serious actor but still uses their stage name, e.g. the critically acclaimed drama "the farewell" starring awkwafina

I am embarrassed for musicians who have been unwittingly immortalized by name in somebody else's song--e.g. "Moves Like Jagger" or "Cool as Kim Deal."

"Alex Chilton" gets a pass because the song is so good, although I imagine Alex Chilton himself was probably embarrassed by it.

people in other countries save their claps for when a plane lands

na (NA), Monday, 26 August 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

i hadn't experienced the clapping for a movie in a long time but it happened at the showing of once upon a time in hollywood i went to last night. same guy was SHRIEKING with laughter anytime anything remotely humorous happened. and when brad pitt insulted bruce lee he went OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH. so maybe i'm more just embarrassed about that dude.

i went to see there's something about mary in l.a. when it came out and the applause was thunderous (i mean i definitely joined in, i was 13 at the time and thought it was a cinematic masterpiece)

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Monday, 26 August 2019 22:51 (four years ago) link

So far the only thing to register as genuinely embarrassing is the songs named after people. I remember being lightly embarrassed for Mick Jagger after he appeared in that Kesha song but that was also possibly bc I was super stressed out and the song was painfully stuck in my head. I think maybe I don’t feel truly irrationally embarrassed unless I’m eating a Chobani.

Performative driving-your-car-out-of-the-way when there's an ambulance or police car coming and you weren't even slightly in the way in the first place.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 2 September 2019 08:13 (four years ago) link

Isn’t that a law, though?

just1n3, Tuesday, 3 September 2019 01:08 (four years ago) link

See. that's why when I hear sirens, I flick on the hazards, speed up to about 60 and lean on the horn, screaming out the window EVERYONE OUT OF THE WAY, AMBULANCE COMING THROUGH.

And if it turns out there really was no ambulance, well, I'm too far down the road to really feel embarrassed about anything.

Performative driving-your-car-out-of-the-way when there's an ambulance or police car coming and you weren't even slightly in the way in the first place.

I can't for the life of me see why this would embarrass you, so it clearly is the kind of highly irrational response this thread solicits. I can't even figure out if its you or another driver who is pulling over, so even your description has a whiff of irrationality to it.

I think this post may set a new standard for the rest of us to aim at.

One of my cats is obsessed with going into the bathroom with me. I don't exactly find it embarrassing, but it certainly is weird.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 3 September 2019 03:59 (four years ago) link

If you live in a city, your dog will never crap unobserved by you, so when they find you enthroned on the can it is merely fair-play turnabout.

coup de twat (suzy), Tuesday, 3 September 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

Just to be clear, moving out of the way of ambulances is fine and good, obviously. Driving your car across the cycle lane and onto the verge when there is already loads of room for it to get through, as if this is some sort of competition as to who can get most out of the way, this is embarrassing.

One of my cats is obsessed with going into the bathroom with me. I don't exactly find it embarrassing, but it certainly is weird.

When I was sitting down on the toilet, our old cat used to wander in and curl up in my lowered underpants, which was unhelpful.

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link
