a bunch of the tracks were stuff that most DJs already had,

these cds were probably one of my first exposures to this stuff and after the fact, i've found a lot more of the records of stuff on 1 than 2

They're both good to add your own selections to. Disco Not Disco is a great tag: so many artists from dif subgenres and genres messed with elements of disco, and you can even go back and pretend you're Nicky Siano, and pick "pre"-disco, that works as disco (at least in a Nicky Siano's Legendary The Gallery, LSD=friendly ambience). Like "Marbles," from John McLaughlin's 1969 album Devotion.Kind of a warped "Time Is Tight" and/or "I Can't Turn You Loose." They're basically jamming (edited by Alan Douglas, to McL.'s distress, but it works).

did anyone see that TBS commercial for their broadcast of lord of the rings, where they started "scratching" a scene of gandalf on his horse with this bright rainbow'y background -and they were playing "ride the white horse"? it was kinda insane

I had no idea this song could be interpretated like that but anyway I love it!!!

Lulu was playing this on Radio 2 the other afternoon. Someone wrote in saying that Goldfrapp's "Ride A White Horse" was a cover version and this was the original. Lulu let it run for about two minutes before hurriedly fading it amidst mutters of "don't get that one" etc.

They didnt endorse doing heroin or cocaine in this song... they endorsed smoking grass.

man, so i finally found the full length White Horse is on. i'm rather embarrassed by it. i imagined the makers of this song to be dark and brooding german industrial dudes in leather, but they're like laid back surfer brahs just chillin on the beach. totally dorky.

and the front cover is all sunshine and beaches. i mean... i guess that bitch is gonna get eaten

oh yeah, at the same store i found this, there was a copy of their 1990 record and there was a song on there that totally trying to cash in on White Horse. totally, tame (ie. lame) version of it. same bassline but oh so boring.

u s steel, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 05:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I remember, in fourth grade, a kid in our class brought the 12" of this in for show and tell. The teacher let him play it on the class turntable, but I don't think we even made it halfway through before it getting yanked for being "inappropriate". I'm not sure that I've heard it more than twice since then.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Was it the drugs part or the "rich / bitch" that was so incriminating?

Fly Away/Walking In The Sunshine's first few seconds are also v nice

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:34 (fifteen years ago) link

it was probably how unbelievably nasty the beat is - there's something obviously inappropriate about the song from the very beginning

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 13:11 (fifteen years ago) link

The teacher was growing more and more uncomfortable as the song played, but yeah, I think it was the "bitch" that finally pushed it over the edge.

The blasts of distorted guitar/synth-thing in "White Horse" are quite underrated and unique. One of the more underrated passages of the song is that one time the distorted guitars hit a drone and sustain for several bars early on in the song, and let the weird flute melody putter on over it.

Then in a weird tempo change, the distorted guitar/synth-thing releases, and "IF YOU WANNA RIIIDE".

Extremely subtle, beautiful, different. Even moreso than the rare accented 7-beat counts in Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" bridge -- which is also brilliant.

i would write a 45 RPM series book on "White Horse"

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

sub "weird tempo change" to "weird beat count" (probably due to editing the song on tape, most likely)

all djs are aware of that little hurdle, as well as the hurdle near the end when everything drops out besides a percussive "BAH-BSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH" which if you've already starting mixing a track in will fuck yo shit right up

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

The 12" version has another such hurdled in an extended "BAH-BSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH" part that's not on the 4-beat before going back to the "RICH?... you bitch" refrain.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

AH, we were talking about the same thing, never mind. Yeah, the song ends in a single cold BAH-BSSH too, but at that point, the quick fade-in will have to do.

i wonder how many times this has been done? i know many of my friends and i have done it at various house parties and the like. it almost seems way too obvious but it works every time.
