Basically nobody has any idea about anything at this point so trying to come up with a good take (at least one that isn't just based around why a candidate is actually good or not) is always a loser.

Matt got blackout drunk and suicidal
more proof that Matt is the best chapo, this is the correct response to being forced to cover these things
― Simon H., Friday, 5 July 2019 17:12 (four years ago) link
caught a bit of one the recent chapo eps the other night - my gf puts on podcasts at bedtime - and they were covering, with righteous indignation,a bret stephenson piece were he pretends he will ever vote democrat in the general and that the dems should care about his opinions and not be "too far-left" etc. and fair enough, that absolute dogshit should be greeted with opprobrium, but it just feels very deja vu at this stage.

This is blowing up a bit:
uhhhh i guess this was calculated to get a rise out of people, but it's still really bad for one of the Chapo people to give a friendly interview to Spiked, a far-right publication – & for her co-interviewee to use it to slag off anti-fascists?? wtf @CHAPOTRAPHOUSE pic.twitter.com/tyB6UBsCOM— molly smith (@pastachips) July 5, 2019

amazing to me how much time and energy you guys put into deciphering the internicene convolutions of what are essentially obscure talk radio hosts
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link
when i had a twitter account i was well-versed in all sorts of controversies of this ilk and it took basically no effort on my part at all. definitely not something i miss knowing about mind you
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 July 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link
what and where is this Anna interview?Chapo seems more bearable when you just stick to the podcast.

https://www.spiked-online.com/2019/07/04/meet-the-anti-woke-left/?ampcf=1ok found it

lol you could set your watch to chapo/red scare flare-ups by now.
― oiocha, Friday, 5 July 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link
Thanks for giving us a heads up about your superiority?
It doesn't really take a lot of energy to, uh, click on links FWIW.

I guess it's not clear to me if fans/followers of this stuff think its just entertainment or if it serves some larger legit political organizing purpose. I initially followed this thread for the while thinking it might develop into the latter but honestly it seems much more the former, like its more of an inconsequential soap opera with occasional joeks ("just links clicking links" etc)
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link
I think the “larger political purpose” question was answered by the Daily Show 15 years ago.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:06 (four years ago) link
haha fair point. and interesting parallel to draw.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link
fwiw they have said time and time again on the show itself that posting and listening to podcasts is not organizing and should not be confused as such
― Simon H., Friday, 5 July 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link
It's only a problem if such podcasts actively deter from engaging in political action and I highly doubt that's the case. Although I do agree that the esoteric nature of these interminable Twitter beefs is eye-rolling, which can be said of almost anything that involves social media.
― pomenitul, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link
so this is more like an exercise in ideology as a performative/sporting event?
I'm not saying this is a problem per se I'm just trying to understand the phenomenon, what people get out of it etc
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:14 (four years ago) link
like, you have your favorites and you get to root for your side in the world of social media etc
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:16 (four years ago) link
etc I say
Not that different from politics 'proper' tbh.
― pomenitul, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:16 (four years ago) link
Performativity and ideology are inseparable from 'actual' political action. It's inextricable imho.
― pomenitul, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:17 (four years ago) link
basically chapo is the most lucrative, most listened to left-wing (not counting liberals here) podcast in north america and lots of left-wing people on twitter are aghast about the hosts' antics from a "they should be cancelled" perspective. pretty much par for the course in this day and age.
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:18 (four years ago) link
that's true.
xp
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:19 (four years ago) link

so leftists listen to it but they also find it offensive? seems like there's more significant people to worry about cancelling, would be my default response.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link
ie people with actual power to impact policy
honestly I'm not trying to be judgmental I just find this whole phenomenon baffling
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link
Not to mention Trump is possibly the most performative POTUS we've seen so far in our lifetimes. He comes from reality TV ffs.
― pomenitul, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link
― Οὖτις, Friday, July 5, 2019 11:20 AM (two minutes ago)
a lot of people don't listen to it, hate it, and get mad about things that the hosts' tweet, say in interviews etc.
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:23 (four years ago) link
I don't really get it either, cyclops. It's just that policy is a language that very few voters are willing to speak, and we have to make do with that.
― pomenitul, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:24 (four years ago) link
The sense of ownership that comes with the new model of patronage may also be a factor: ppl read this interview and think “shit, I’m funding the coke habit of a reprehensible moron”. Obv that’s an inevitable result of being a consumer of entertainment in general but this mode feeling more personal and direct might make it smart a bit more. You can also literally cancel them in a way that might feel more meaningful, at least on your end
― shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:29 (four years ago) link
at this point all of the ire is directed at one person who is maybe on 1/5 of the episodes and mostly says dumb shit elsewhere
― Simon H., Friday, 5 July 2019 18:30 (four years ago) link
I wasn't referring to whatever this latest flare-up is (the specifics of which I don't really care about) but the phenomenon of Chapo as a source of interest/controversy in general, which is alluded to repeatedly throughout this thread
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:35 (four years ago) link
This is the chapo thread
― shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:37 (four years ago) link
I mean also it's been instrumental in showing there's a demo to support a whole ecosystem of independent left-wing content, so I think what happens w/ them reverberates a bit, especially since there's so little left-wing representation in the mainstream media
― Simon H., Friday, 5 July 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link
It's leftist news of the week comedy (or "comedy") - their bread and butter is doing readings from awful centrist and right-wing columnists/writers and riffing on them. It's not really an "exercise in ideology" so much as they appeal to a base that has a (very) broadly shared ideology.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:39 (four years ago) link
idk what mainstream media is anymore, apart from Fox
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:39 (four years ago) link
If you do an art film comedy podcast, you're going to have in-jokes about Tarkovsky and Bela Tarr and Jodoworsky and shit because you and your audience get them innately. It's like that but with tankies and the New Left and the Banana Wars.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:40 (four years ago) link
I don’t get it why do people care about something I don’t care about it’s so weird
― Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link
Chapo Twitter controversy falls primarily into two camps - residual liberal outrage at Bernie Bros where people think they're all reactionary racist misogynist brocialists and 'rose emoji' outrage when Amber says something dumb that actually is racist/misogynistic/brocialist.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:44 (four years ago) link
lol latebloomer, exactly!

shakey also one of the absolute kings of posting about things he doesn't care about on ilx
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:50 (four years ago) link
Someone will post “stranger things” to it later xp
― shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Friday, 5 July 2019 18:51 (four years ago) link
I legit don't care about Chapo trap house although initially when this thread started I was wondering if I should.
"Stranger Things" is a little different in that I cared enough to watch it and afterwards let people know that it is bad and stupid and they are bad and stupid for liking it.
my posts on the "Star Wars" thread are p much just trolling, I do not care enough to ever watch anything Star Wars-related ever again
― Οὖτις, Friday, 5 July 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link
Caring enough to post is not, like, a high level of caring tbf
― shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Friday, 5 July 2019 19:00 (four years ago) link
it’s not specific to chapo but that level of politics discourse is kinda like sports actually
