Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:01 (four months ago) link

I dont know this Rachel's album. Math-rock?

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:04 (four months ago) link

It’s ODB or Autechre (who were in in the middle of their artistically most interesting period).

Many great metal albums, I think Skepticism and Ulver aren’t even in the top 10 for this year, which has Anathema, Summoning, Immortal, Rammstein, Death, Mütiilation, The Gathering, etc.

its nothing like the don caballero album (i hope somebody votes for don cab as it's my fave album by one of my fave bands)

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:12 (four months ago) link

the 90s years have been ridiculously good and cutting lists has been really hard for mike and I and everyone posts albums not in it and we're like yes they should be in it too.

Shows up the futility of canons as they dont come near representing the best stuff for a lot of people

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:14 (four months ago) link

so much music came out in the 90s compared to previous decades maybe?

and the 00s were even worse in that respect, esp with p2p we could actually hear almost everything we read about.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:16 (four months ago) link

I dont its a case of more music coming out in the 90s

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:01 (four months ago) link

Voting Liquid Swords. Not sure if I should be surprised that Rancid ...And Out Come the Wolves didn’t get in.

o. nate, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:02 (four months ago) link

Omni Trio, Carl Craig or Scott Walker. Think I'll go with C2

or something, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:06 (four months ago) link

Landcruising is one of the few genuinely great techno albums. A Wonderful Life, Home Entertainment, Science Fiction are all standouts but it works from start to finish

or something, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:08 (four months ago) link

Not sure if I should be surprised that Rancid ...And Out Come the Wolves didn’t get in.

considered it but it just bubbled under the bubbling under list!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:03 (four months ago) link

wasn't expecting it to be on this list, but John Wall's sample-based Alterstill from 1995 is beautiful

Dan S, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:20 (four months ago) link

Emmylou Harris’s Wrecking Ball is my 1995 fave. Voting Penthouse here. Good year for reverb.

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:30 (four months ago) link

love Penthouse

Dan S, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:34 (four months ago) link

re: rachel's - i lived in louisville in the '90s so i have a soft spot for that scene.

frogbs - good call on Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem; one of my faves of theirs

Un Poco Loco Moco (rushomancy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:39 (four months ago) link

I could happily vote for maybe 20 these and might have chosen Labradford, Luna or Slowdive at the time. But I'll opt for Labcabincalifornia. I've had that CD forever but still don't feel like I entirely grasp what's going on. Which is nice.

A Guy Called Gerald's Black Secret Technology sounds strange to me in the moment but also it is kind of amazing

Dan S, Thursday, 1 August 2019 01:36 (four months ago) link

am going to vote for Maxinquaye though, it's the album I love the most from 1995

A Guy Called Gerald's Black Secret Technology sounds strange to me in the moment but also it is kind of amazing

Really fancied listening to Black Secret Technology on my way home from work the other day but sadly it's not on Spotify.

This is the first of these lists where I actually heard several (i.e. more than two) of the albums during the year in question - at the time I would have voted for the Chemical Brothers (I got that and the Goldie album on CD for Xmas).

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 August 2019 14:01 (four months ago) link

by the way out of the list i posted i want to specifically go out of my way to promote "black belt in boogie", wherein erstwhile Black Oak Arkansas imitators Raging Slab decided to go all-in on the Captain Beefheart sound. rick rubin refused to release it, and they released a revamped version (which is nearly as good) the next year. i cannot overstate how much i love this record; it's one of my most-listened to albums.

Abigail, Wife of Preserved Fish (rushomancy), Thursday, 1 August 2019 14:02 (four months ago) link

lots of great hip hop on this set, the Big L record is fantastic. Went Raekwon in the end.

I wish I could vote for all my selections

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:10 (four months ago) link

Critics slagged off the jazzbo bits of "Timeless" but tracks like "Sea of Tears" are gorgeous imo. I hope the album gets a good few votes

The World According To.... (Michael B), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:16 (four months ago) link

cracking album, saw a bit of Goldie live at t in the park 96 playing this album

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:35 (four months ago) link

Wow, I must have been bored to tears or sleeping that year. Of that stuff, I think only the rap stuff would be stuff I would listen to now. I need to think...

Stalinist Indie Hair-Flipping.edu (I M Losted), Saturday, 3 August 2019 03:33 (four months ago) link

Sea Of Tears is pretty great isn't it. Timeless was my first impulse here.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Saturday, 3 August 2019 10:31 (four months ago) link

Is The Great Escape the most 'has aged terribly' record ever?

didn't people think that in 1996?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Monday, 5 August 2019 08:09 (four months ago) link

I remember a Melody Maker review declaring it a masterpiece

The World According To.... (Michael B), Monday, 5 August 2019 12:12 (four months ago) link

I remember Melody Maker giving Catatonia album of the year and liking Suede's Head Music. MM went downhill pretty fast

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Monday, 5 August 2019 14:31 (four months ago) link

Look at all those good albums. What a good year.

Voting Black Grape just to be contrary.

stop torturing me ethel (broom air), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:23 (four months ago) link

I missed To Bring You My Love on my first readthrough, which was the first PJ Harvey album I outright loved

brigadier pudding (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2019 16:28 (four months ago) link

the black grape album deserves votes s its a really great album and the best album Shaun Ryder made imo

SLOWDIVE

there's many albums I love in here but Souvlaki is the only one I'd play right now.
