I've been wondering this too. I thought at first it was just about sex, but I just took another look at the lyrics, and it seems like maybe he and his girl are about to go on some kind of crime spree over by the dynamo. Like, he's going to prove how much he cares about her by doing some unspecified bad thing, and he wants her to prove that she loves him by coming along?

I mean, he tells her to tie her hair back in a long white bow, and when Bruce gives you a dress code, you know crime is about to go down.

in the song bruce's character is a baker who works long hours. he puts the sourdough loafs in a temperature controlled prover when he leaves at night to be ready when he gets in in the morning.

he gives his girl a loaf of bread each day, therefore "proving it all night" for her.

this is one of my favorite songs off darkness, for some reason it makes me think of a fraught couple playing pool in a bar and not talking to each other

My favorite thing about this song is all the moaning he does during the '78 live performances.

Phoenix '78 is a good one. Around the halfway mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okrvOAUg-yY

Otm about the moaning. Feel like this is perhaps another example of the much noted Van Morrison influence on the album.

Which band member is doing most of the backing vocals on that live video, couldn’t quite tell.
