not displaying follower stats on the homepage is nice
― lag∞n, Saturday, August 3, 2019 10:59 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink
interesting they also subtly deemphasized replying via not providing u a box to type into by default, u have to do a click to get it
― lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2019 02:07 (four years ago) link
also removed tweet count
― lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2019 22:50 (four years ago) link
i thought so too but its way up at the top for some reason
― ciderpress, Monday, 5 August 2019 22:51 (four years ago) link

hey i have an etiquette question
i mostly use twitter to engage w/ colleagues in my profession. it's not a huge field and the subfields i work in are even smaller. about a year ago, i learned that someone who works in one of those subfields whom i don't know personally and w/ whom i have never interacted has blocked me on twitter. it's the first and as far as i know only time that someone in my field has blocked me. and while i don't know this person, we know A LOT of the same people, even quite well, and work from the same kinds of perspectives informed by the same kinds of values, which makes the professional sub-community we share even more tight-knit and connected.
at first when i realized they blocked me i just kind of shrugged my shoulders, realizing that people block other accounts for all kinds of reasons, and that this person's blocking of me may or may not have to do with me personally. even if it did, i know that person is entitled to that. what can you do, besides reflecting on possible reasons that might require some kind of rectification? and i came up a short on that.
but now i am seeing that this person is organizing a professional event next year that i would otherwise almost certainly attend - it's right in my subfield, i'll know most of the people going, i know most of the speakers. hell i'm even working on a major project overseen by the person keynoting the event. i'd even have submitted a proposal to present at the event myself but of course i missed the call for proposals deadline because i'm blocked from the person's twitter account, where they made the cfp announcement.
so what's the best way to proceed? if i attend, it feels extremely likely that i might end up in proximity to this person, and if that happens, do i just act as if i am oblivious about the block? they might not even really make the connection themselves depending on how minor or casual or automatic the reason for the block was. but who knows? and it seems like a terrible idea to say "hey i think you blocked me on twitter, but we have a lot of the same friends and colleagues and are working on the same issues, do you think it is a mistake?" when it truly might not be a mistake.
i can't help but be aware of some racialized and gendered aspects of the situation too - on one hand, i'm a colleague of color hesitating to participate in a valuable professional event because of possible hostility from an unknown white colleague, and on the other hand, it terrifies me that any interaction with this person, given the circumstances, might even faintly resemble the typical dynamic of a man expressing bitterness, contempt and entitlement after being blocked on twitter by someone who isn't a man.
― marcos, Friday, 9 August 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link
id go and not mention it.
i don't know your twitter activity so it's hard to make assumptions but basically you may just have been retweeted into their timeline with an opinion they didn't like or regarding something they're actively disinterested in and maybe that's why? and it could be something innocuous
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 9 August 2019 19:12 (four years ago) link
You have two options:
- Say nothing, ever.
- Email "Hi, I wish you had promoted the CfP for this on channels other than Twitter, because you have me blocked there. I would've submitted a proposal if I knew about this event on time."
Don't be coy or ask about it for any other reason. Decide whether to attend the event entirely on the merits of the event.

they easily cldve blocked u accidentally fwiw
― lag∞n, Friday, 9 August 2019 19:18 (four years ago) link
especially via web twitter and its terrible key commands, like for instance i just added the (non)word espcailly to my computers dictionary while writing this post
― lag∞n, Friday, 9 August 2019 19:20 (four years ago) link
thank you all, i think these are good options
most likely i'll go and won't mention it - if in fact we do meet and have a positive interaction, i suppose i could then say "hey you blocked me...."
and silby i like how you framed that second option - don't be coy but also don't speak beyond the impact it had on my awareness of this particular event
― marcos, Friday, 9 August 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link
i have accidentally blocked ppl on twitter -- i would just proceed as if i didn't know about the block. if someone has a major problem w you (unlikely) they are going to have to do more to excommunicate you from the community than block you (perhaps by accident) on a social media platform.

twitter is so bad for my brain. esp since i mostly follow politics/journalism ppl. to do that every morning first thing and for most of the day compulsively is so unhealthy. at least when i used to click on this site compulsively it was in service of seeing what wise old souls thought about chart-neglected neil young albums or whatever. now it's just seeing the President and being poisoned by images of him and people talking about his shit. why. whyyyyyyy
― dell (del), Friday, 9 August 2019 19:57 (four years ago) link

― Dan S, Saturday, 10 August 2019 00:16 (four years ago) link
it does feel particularly toxic to read the infighting. it's like, everything sucks so hard right now for obv reasons but following ppl who follow that stuff and who are super-invested in it just gets super painful after a while. you can even see some of them self-censoring themselves or whatever. ashley feinberg, etc. man it makes me glad i didn't go to journalism school? i mean at this point i think everything in life, the world, is going to end seriously horrible and badly, but at least i won't have a byline.
