Why did "Stitches" beat "Blue Monday?"

billstevejim, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:12 (four years ago) link

"blue monday" was probably at its trl-peak earlier than the beginning of whatever summer-centered survey period they used to compile the countdown? i don't think "stitches" would have been the overall bigger video

i actually love "she's all i ever had" (esp the harmonies on the sustained note leading into the chorus), tho its video is kinda cheesy/eh

"crazy" was kinda great and the video was pretty fun (and yes it was def the stop remix!). i semi-love all the singles from britney's debut, honestly, save "from the bottom of my broken heart"

this poll is impossible. i voted for "if you had my love"... would prob put "anywhere" second. can't think beyond that.

Kinda crazy that the US went with “From The Bottom...” as the fourth single instead of “Born to Make You Happy” like the rest of the world did. Now there’s a song...

xp

yeah "born to make you happy" was amazing, the only song i listened to from the album other than the 3 singles i liked

it's one of the songs I listen to the most from my Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack

lol

Was this article written by a 12-year-old?

I only recently realised that 'Steal My Sunshine' is entirely based arouynd the breakdown from Andrea True Connection's 'More More More'

"Livin' La Vida Loca" is probably the most horrific of the bunch here. Rosie O'Donnell-core.

might've just voted for lit. it was a blur, all happened so fast

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

it took 20 years but i'm finally starting to get really sick of "steal my sunshine"

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 01:18 (four years ago) link

The Pandora radio station they piped into my last retail job had a habit of playing “More More More” 5 times a shift so I could definitely go without hearing that loop ever again.

Vape Store (crüt), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

that loop is barely present in "more more more" tho -- looping those 2 bars is what made the sample so brilliant!

(i love "more more more" but i have never been exposed to it that often)

Oops, add one more vote for "Give It To You."

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 15:34 (four years ago) link

I had completely forgotten until earlier in this thread that "Give It To You" was Jam & Lewis.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 17:49 (four years ago) link

"give it to you" is amazing and they def self-ripped it off for "someone to call my lover"

I remember being puzzled by that whole episode. Jordan Knight re-emerges after the guts of a decade in the wilderness with this really catchy little pop song, and then . . . nothing. He just disappeared as suddenly as he'd arrived.

I mean, what more is there to say after a "Give It To You"?

What is it about 'All Star' that seems to divorce it from its point of origin? I can never remember when it was released, and I'm always surprised when I see it lumped in with other songs from the same era. Like it doesn't seem right for some reason. It could've been released in '99, 1962, last year, four hundred years ago. All of those options seem like they could be correct. I know there was a time in my life before 'All Star' existed but my sense of how long that span was is pretty nebulous. Perhaps it was always there, never drawing attention to itself but lingering and waiting for the proper moment to appear in all its finery. I've always known the words. I was born knowing the words, they were the first to escape my lips after drawing my first lungful of air. Always have I known that shooting stars, and ONLY shooting stars, can break the moh-ooo-old.
