I only remember the episode where he got gout. He just looks like Bobby Hill and has that 13 yr old 'edginess'.

Yerac, Friday, 13 September 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

That gout episode really resonated with me and one friend. We refer to it semi-annually.

Yerac, Friday, 13 September 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

Bobby has a heart of gold

flappy bird, Friday, 13 September 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

that Kristin Stewart Totinos commercial was really great but idk how long ago that was

last SNL sketch that actually made me laugh, anyway

omg just watched that and it's fantastic

Please for the love of god - if you hate SNL and think they haven't had a funny sketch in years (but also haven't watched in years!), just stay out of this thread! I'm not going to pretend that they are always funny, but I almost always find a couple of good laughs in every episode. And go back to whatever you think are the "golden" years and try to watch a whole episode. I'm guessing the batting average has always been pretty similar (low, but not zero). For a live weekly show, that's good enough for me and my quickskip button.

DJI, Friday, 13 September 2019 21:54 (four years ago) link

Man do i ever hate snl. They haven’t had a funny sketch in years!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 13 September 2019 21:56 (four years ago) link

At least I think that’s the case, i haven’t seen an episode since 89

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 13 September 2019 21:57 (four years ago) link

yes that was the Betty White one. It had one funny sketch with her and Tina Fey, and the rest was "lol Grandma has sex"

I saw ONE Driver sketch, Yerac. Love has its limits.

On the one hand, the anti SNL hysteria can be pretty overblown, but on the other hand I do think it's become much worse the last two years, since Michael Che and Colin Jost became co-head writers.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 September 2019 23:52 (four years ago) link

the season before this last one was pretty strong from what I remember. this past year was not as strong. I still find weekend update the only reliably worthwhile segment.

I liked leslie jones and I like pete davidson.

these new cast members look instantly forgettable and fireable. show hasn't really had a breakout person since McKinnon came on.

akm, Saturday, 14 September 2019 00:08 (four years ago) link

I watch every damn episode for some reason

this past season was about as bad a season as they've had

that one Adam Driver sketch where he was the vengeful ancient oilman talking to a junior high class was great

I haven't watched regularly since..uh..well, before Bobby Moynahan joined the cast

Yerac, Monday, 16 September 2019 13:09 (four years ago) link

Two minutes into the first episode, there were people saying that the previous minute was better.

"SNL used to be good in [insert your prefeered era] and now it sucks" is like the most boring and predictable thing to say about SNL.

he does a lot of bit stuff where they need a "teenager" or pizza delivery guy or shit like that in a sketch

show hasn't really had a breakout person since McKinnon came on.

Feel like if Heidi Gardner keeps it up, she'll be the next breakout. She's pretty much the only reason I kept watching this past season.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 16 September 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

contra the above point that every era of the show has a similar hit/miss ratio, i've gotten to the franken/davis years after lorne's comeback in my rewatch, and i am actually really enjoying it. there's the expected and unfortunate amounts of misogyny and homophobia, but it hasn't become as pseudo-'transgressive' as the mid-to-late-'90s, and it seems way more 'writerly'(?), thinking of stuff like the hartman/lovitz 'permission to speak freely' sketch, or matthew modine portraying 'the liberal' as a hero on the run in the vein of the era's lightly-serialized action shows. even the game show parodies are a bit more conceptual.

the h.w. bush stuff does seem like a shift to how the show will deal with powerful political figures going forward, just exaggerate one or two traits and lean on them in a kind of gentle caricature, but mostly the political stuff is way less toothless than now. or maybe i just really love dennis miller's hair.

sovereignty flight, Monday, 16 September 2019 16:38 (four years ago) link

The two sketches that I liked a lot from last season, off the top of my head, were Sandler's Romano Tours and the Don Cheadle bar fight.

Yerac, Monday, 16 September 2019 16:40 (four years ago) link

RE: Gillis - not entirely sure why anyone would want to defend or hang on to a guy who voluntarily opted multiple times to release a bunch of racist jokes and speeches onto the internet for self-promotion? This seems cut and dried to me and it's fucking weird that apparently it's not. This isn't cancel culture, it's just the realpolitik of you can say anything you want but then you have to take responsibility for saying it and, in this case, maybe don't give one of the fifteen most sought after writing/acting gigs on the planet to someone who has engaged in this behavior within the past five year?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 16 September 2019 16:45 (four years ago) link

was the donald glover oran "juice" jones sketch last season or the year before?

Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 September 2019 16:48 (four years ago) link

it's also fun to chart the popularity of like hans and franz, from the 10-to-1 sketch on the '87 premiere to the cold open in '88, and imagine the legions of people enamored of this arnold parody, walking around the office threatening to 'pump you up!' and stuff.

sovereignty flight, Monday, 16 September 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link

Glover was the season before last. And that was such a wonderfully batshit sketch.
