i thought the game show and local news skits at the beginning of this episode were 2 very good renditions of overused SNL rubrics
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 October 2019 16:16 (four years ago) link
the opening political sketches are prob some of the most embarrassing "comedy" i've ever seen tho
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 October 2019 16:22 (four years ago) link
Bowen Yang's weekend update bit was pretty good.
― Yerac, Sunday, 6 October 2019 16:43 (four years ago) link
cryptosicko otm. Best sketch of the night. But ugh that old-guy news thing was interminable. I would've much rather seen another Heidi Gardner girlfriend-from-a-boxing-movie bit.
And every time I see Matthew Broderick, I can only think of how he killed two people and got off with a $175 fine.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 6 October 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link
But ugh that old-guy news thing was interminable.
it was weird to end update w this
overall not really a good ep imo

More SNL neoliberal crap. They hate Bernie, which is no surprise. This version of the show would be pro-Nixon in '68. https://t.co/nQnkcZJBI6— Dennis Perrin (@DennisThePerrin) October 27, 2019

they are jokes and awfully mild ones, ffs
― akm, Sunday, 27 October 2019 14:09 (four years ago) link
I really like the proportions of chance the rapper's arms. So weird but I couldn't stop looking at them during the opening monologue.
This was a really bad episode. Everything seemed way underrehearsed.
― Yerac, Sunday, 27 October 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link
Most of the sketches were undercooked or awkward (the flying one was a mess; the physical demands of the bit totally threw off any sense of rhythm or timing), but I thought the graveyard skit was really funny, and Chance was an engaging presence throughout the episode.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 27 October 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link
yeah he was a good host. musical performances were really good too. again, I was stoned so I found the whole episode amusing enough. the flying sketch started stupid but got funny for some reason.
― akm, Sunday, 27 October 2019 17:31 (four years ago) link
Yeah, every time he's on SNL I end up feeling bad for not being more familiar with his output (though I had "Sunday Candy" high up on my tracks ballot of whichever year that was).
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 27 October 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link
I also gotta say that the set design, lighting, etc for the musical performances has been outstanding this season.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 27 October 2019 17:49 (four years ago) link
jesus Jost looks like a cast-off from that Fox News attempt at a comedy show
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 28 October 2019 13:21 (four years ago) link
yeah I was going to say that about the staging for the musical performances. this week, plus camille cabello's set, were pretty impressive.
― akm, Monday, 28 October 2019 14:07 (four years ago) link
Taylor Swift and Billy Eilish had cool staging too, esp BI with that box room that rotated

Apparently it's "funny" to deadname and misgender Caitlyn Jenner in order to make a Kanye joke.

― Yerac, Sunday, 3 November 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link
The gift meat segment had me helpless with laughter, due much more to the delivery of the lines than any greatness in the script.
― A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 3 November 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link
Aidy Bryant is becoming the new Kenan: just her presence and delivery will keep the worst sketch from completely sucking.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 3 November 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link
Too little Kenan last night means that I barely laughed at all. On the positive side, because we got well after the show had started last night, we were able to fast forward through Coldplay.

It's interesting that between him and Chance, the best hosts this season have been host/musical guest combos. The "Joan" skit was one of the best things I've seen on SNL in a while; an already funny premise, well executed, that just keeps getting increasingly absurd.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 17 November 2019 17:53 (four years ago) link
And of course Timberlake has been a go-to as well. Chance is a more interesting hosting phenom, since he's not the product of some boy band triple-threat factory.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 17 November 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link
I laughed a lot during that funeral sketch. And the drug one had some obvious jokes but I also thought it was great. He had a top monologue, not very many of those.

I guess when SNL created their youtube channel, they checked the 'maximum' box under the Ads heading

I know Cecily Strong works with animal rescue and usually when there are dogs in sketches it seems like she's there so I wonder if this increase in dogs is completely due to her.
Doug stole the show
― akm, Monday, 18 November 2019 14:24 (four years ago) link
impeachment open sketch was fucking awful again

Joan bit was ace; Aidy's been on a whole new level lately (and she was hilarious from the beginning). Chris Redd killed, and I lol'd at Heidi Gardner fainting in the otherwise crapulent cold open. Hell, I even thought the otherwise always-meh Mooney was good as the Dean guy.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 18 November 2019 16:05 (four years ago) link
History has been made, as last night featured the first SNL musical guest I have literally never heard of.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 November 2019 13:45 (four years ago) link
me too and I thought she was awesome. granted I was so high I couldn't even stand up but I watched that performance of 1950 three times. Also, rest of the episode was pretty good for once this season. Even the debate sketch was funny.
― akm, Sunday, 24 November 2019 15:35 (four years ago) link
The political stuff remains deadly, but I liked the house party song and I laughed, somewhat to my shame, at the puppet skit.
I don’t know King Princess either, but she sounded promising. Something about the performance seemed off from a technical standpoint—the vocals were too low, maybe—but I’m curious enough to check her out on record.
― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 24 November 2019 15:49 (four years ago) link
there were a lot of taped backing vocals doing the harmony which is how that song sounds as recorded but I don't think they needed to be there but as I said somewhere else (maybe about LDR) that seems to be par for the course these days as annoying as it is. this will sound rockist of me but it was just kind of cool to see someone actually playing a guitar (well) and singing at the same time in a pop song.
― akm, Sunday, 24 November 2019 15:51 (four years ago) link
First song seemed super-compressed. Ferrell always brings the funny.
