I like “fuck the cops” way better than “hip hop” but glad to see the prez... didn’t Kanye have something to do with the drums on “hip hop” or am I imagining things?

brimstead, Sunday, 13 October 2019 22:05 (four years ago) link

drums/beat whatever

brimstead, Sunday, 13 October 2019 22:06 (four years ago) link

I hope a third Aaliyah track places because that'll be the one I voted for.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Sunday, 13 October 2019 22:22 (four years ago) link

I like the bit in the Strokes' song when they sing 'I'm not like that'. I'm sure there must be a musical reason for it.

Thrilled to see two of my favourite songs ever placing, even if it is at #93 and #96.

Good stuff all around so far (except maybe Spoon).

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 23:12 (four years ago) link

Voted Eple and B. Jaxx. Couldn’t decide between the two Aaliyah songs and in the end voted for neither; figured they would do all right without my help but it was a close run thing in the end!

"Hard to Explain" did make my long list but not the final cut. Probably the only Strokes song I care about.

favorite Spoon is Inside Out from 2014 album They Want My Soul

This could potentially be the Spoon song most worth "getting", at least ime:

Excellent Party Down reference title!

Interesting start to the poll. Very heavy on the first few years of the decade.

I gave Aaliyah a good amount of points in albums, but didn't end up finding room for any of her singles. I'm happy to see any of them place.

I'm somewhere in the middle with Spoon. I've cooled on them a bit in recent years, especially as the last two albums were fairly average. They had a great run in the 2000s though. Everything Hits At Once is one of the reasons why they were far ahead of so many other guitar bands in that era. It's such a beautiful melody and their production was always immaculate. Even on their weaker albums, they still sound so good.

I really should have voted for something by The Strokes. I still get a lot from Hard To Explain after all this time.

kitchen person, Sunday, 13 October 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

I get this is a 2000s poll, but the fact that "Are we having fun yet?" is considered a Party Down thing and not a Zippy the Pinhead thing is extremely tilting to me.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 14 October 2019 00:12 (four years ago) link

Huh, I had no idea about the Nickelback reference. Kind of ruins it for me a bit.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 October 2019 00:29 (four years ago) link

Ah! This is a great start! I love or like most of these songs, I think the only one I don’t care about and even find annoying is “where’s your head at?”, and I do like a lot other Basement Jaxx singles from this album. It’s certainly fun but obnoxiously so.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 00:37 (four years ago) link

I really like this Destroyer song.

Ha, I kind of hate that Basement Jaxx song because that commercial it was in was always on that year. (Doritos?)

Great roll-out so far - the images are great!

Yeah, it's one of the few singles from their peak era that I never really need to hear again. The Gary Numan sample was pretty clever, but it got old very quickly and I often skip it when listening to Rooty. Hopefully Romeo is still to come.
