yea if you take out the flashbacks there's like...1 episode worth of stuff going on here. i'm still glad they made it though, it was pretty fun

I enjoyed this. I didn't go in expecting it was gonna be a Godfather 2 like sequel.

Extra episode feels about right.

Also totally right about Plemons.

Hope the next one is all about the zany adventures Badger got into hitchhiking his way back to Albuquerque.

Haha, maybe he got picked up by Buell! Ya never know!

pplains, Monday, 14 October 2019 02:23 (four years ago) link

Ya tbh earlier I thought there'd be a lot more Skinny and Badger than "hey man have a shower and some ramen, heres some cash money and my ride, gtfo man"

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 October 2019 02:42 (four years ago) link

I assumed it was going to be mainly set six years after Breaking Bad, and not at all in the minutes and hours immediately after the final seconds of the show, so it felt like a very protracted hangout with Badger & Skinny Pete to me

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Monday, 14 October 2019 02:55 (four years ago) link

Six years later....

*Jesse lights a cigarette
*Reads the carton
*Goes inside
*Watches Stuart Little 2
*Goes back outside
*Lights another cigarette
*Burns self with lighter
*Screams "Shit, yo!"
*Goes back in house
*Watches Stuart Little 2 again, but in Spanish
*Writes "Brooks was here" on wall
*Hangs self

Where did Pete and badger get al that money from?!

Didn't Walt give them a bunch of money to take part in his scheme with the Greymatter people?

Ooooohhh. Maybe?!

This was good! Not earthshaking but fun fan service and totally enjoyable! If I hadn't seen all of Breaking Bad, it would've been incomprehensible but as I'm a fanboy, it was a good time. More "The Lost Episode" than "The Movie" but hey, who cares?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 14 October 2019 03:41 (four years ago) link

Yeah fan service through and through but enjoyable. Though I found it strange they focused on Todd so much, it felt like the movie was as much about him

Vinnie, Monday, 14 October 2019 04:16 (four years ago) link

Todd singing “Sharing the Night Together” (which I had never heard before) was the weirdest and best part of this whole unnecessary affair

thewufs, Monday, 14 October 2019 04:27 (four years ago) link

OMG we cracked up at that bit because its my other half's fave Dr Hook song, and when he sings it, he does the same suave-guy hand/head movements in the "aw yeah, alright" bit.

Yeah, this. Could've easily been edited into to a nice tight hour of tension and been the better for it. The Walt scene in particular added nothing to the story nor was it particularly illuminating.

chap, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:22 (four years ago) link

I really enjoyed it all, still. But it was v self indulgent.

chap, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:22 (four years ago) link

I enjoyed the walt scene just for the GED bit.

Yerac, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:12 (four years ago) link

What really makes the scene for me, that makes me laugh every single time, is when the truck passes and Todd makes the universal “honk the horn” sign and the guy doesn’t honk the horn and he goes, “Oh well, whatever.” That was completely Jesse Plemons. That was not scripted. When he did it, I was riding in this big giant truck that tows the car that Jesse is pretending to be driving. I’m watching on a monitor, it’s cold outside so you’re bundled up, and I’m huddled next to my director of photography and script supervisor. I say “Action!” and we start rolling and he starts singing. We were all laughing so hard. It’s amazing it didn’t get picked up on the audio track, even at 50 miles an hour with all the wind noise. When he does the horn honk, I almost fell out of the truck I was laughing so hard. He nailed it in one take. It was such a thing of beauty.

consensus on El Camino feels about right - fine and entertaining in its way, but also totally unnecessary and fairly inert. Frankly, I don't think Jesse's a solid enough character to hang something like this on, he just isn't interesting.

Still, was a joy to see Forster. Did this really drop the day he died?

Οὖτις, Monday, 14 October 2019 22:15 (four years ago) link

I dunno, I find Jesse a pretty interesting character. He is definitely the one who's most like actual people I know and it's nice to see a show that is filled with so many ultra-brilliant characters who are always a step or two ahead of each other feature a guy who's kind of a dumbass most of the time.

frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 22:21 (four years ago) link

there's not much room to show his character in this day or so of events, though. just some echoes & reminders of the person we followed for six years, 12 years ago

I thought this was OK, but it felt a little like a bunch of side quests in a video game DLC.

Everything seemed a bit too uncanny valley, for characters who have physically aged 6-12 years over night. Even Walter walking down the hall looked a little funny. I guess the bald cap would've looked pretty convincing had we not known what he really looked like bald.

And I'm a little worried they're going to go Lenin's Tomb on Jonathan Banks one day. Just keep propping him up by the river, going "yeah. That's a string that should never have been pulled. Yup."

Took me a sec to realize it was Aaron Paul in that diner flashback. Would think it wouldn't be difficult to drop 15-20 lbs for a "movie role".

He could possibly be shooting something else that would be messed up if he lost weight? I don't know, I'm just trying to make excuses for him because I like him.

They’ve never cared about things like that in the slightest and I give them mad respect for that, it is good. They keep getting Bob Odenkirk to play Saul at like 14 years old and all they do is put him in a funny hat or something

I thought this was great. i liked the sleepy and steady tone. It's kind of a weird movie to have made and it's not what I would have expected but it gave Jesse good closure.

The cameo people thought was unnecessary: I assume you're talking about Kristin Ritter? That conversation was completely necessary. A bit glib perhaps but it's an important part of the end of Jesse's story.

Question though: the bit with Mike at the very beginning: when was that supposed to have been?

akm, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 13:26 (four years ago) link

that's after Mike & Jesse decide they're out of the 3 man operation, after which Walt decides to team up with Todd. midway through S5 if I remember correctly

I can see why it was included but "make your own destiny" was pretty much Walt's thing too

Right, but that underscored the gulf between Walt and Jesse in how they handled their own making.

latino dudes get a pretty tough time on this show, huh

- victor (dead)
- krazy-8 (dead)
- tuco (dead)
- combo (dead)
- hugo (fired from the high school for walt's sins)

I thought Hugo was Native American
