Shall we anticpate the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

I really enjoyed it all, still. But it was v self indulgent.

I enjoyed the walt scene just for the GED bit.

What really makes the scene for me, that makes me laugh every single time, is when the truck passes and Todd makes the universal “honk the horn” sign and the guy doesn’t honk the horn and he goes, “Oh well, whatever.” That was completely Jesse Plemons. That was not scripted. When he did it, I was riding in this big giant truck that tows the car that Jesse is pretending to be driving. I’m watching on a monitor, it’s cold outside so you’re bundled up, and I’m huddled next to my director of photography and script supervisor. I say “Action!” and we start rolling and he starts singing. We were all laughing so hard. It’s amazing it didn’t get picked up on the audio track, even at 50 miles an hour with all the wind noise. When he does the horn honk, I almost fell out of the truck I was laughing so hard. He nailed it in one take. It was such a thing of beauty.

consensus on El Camino feels about right - fine and entertaining in its way, but also totally unnecessary and fairly inert. Frankly, I don't think Jesse's a solid enough character to hang something like this on, he just isn't interesting.

Still, was a joy to see Forster. Did this really drop the day he died?

Οὖτις, Monday, 14 October 2019 22:15 (four years ago) link

I dunno, I find Jesse a pretty interesting character. He is definitely the one who's most like actual people I know and it's nice to see a show that is filled with so many ultra-brilliant characters who are always a step or two ahead of each other feature a guy who's kind of a dumbass most of the time.

frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 22:21 (four years ago) link

there's not much room to show his character in this day or so of events, though. just some echoes & reminders of the person we followed for six years, 12 years ago

I thought this was OK, but it felt a little like a bunch of side quests in a video game DLC.

Breaking Bad: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Edition, starring Skinny Pete and Badger

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 14 October 2019 23:14 (four years ago) link

Everything seemed a bit too uncanny valley, for characters who have physically aged 6-12 years over night. Even Walter walking down the hall looked a little funny. I guess the bald cap would've looked pretty convincing had we not known what he really looked like bald.

And I'm a little worried they're going to go Lenin's Tomb on Jonathan Banks one day. Just keep propping him up by the river, going "yeah. That's a string that should never have been pulled. Yup."

Took me a sec to realize it was Aaron Paul in that diner flashback. Would think it wouldn't be difficult to drop 15-20 lbs for a "movie role".

He could possibly be shooting something else that would be messed up if he lost weight? I don't know, I'm just trying to make excuses for him because I like him.

They’ve never cared about things like that in the slightest and I give them mad respect for that, it is good. They keep getting Bob Odenkirk to play Saul at like 14 years old and all they do is put him in a funny hat or something

I thought this was great. i liked the sleepy and steady tone. It's kind of a weird movie to have made and it's not what I would have expected but it gave Jesse good closure.

The cameo people thought was unnecessary: I assume you're talking about Kristin Ritter? That conversation was completely necessary. A bit glib perhaps but it's an important part of the end of Jesse's story.

Question though: the bit with Mike at the very beginning: when was that supposed to have been?

akm, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 13:26 (four years ago) link

that's after Mike & Jesse decide they're out of the 3 man operation, after which Walt decides to team up with Todd. midway through S5 if I remember correctly

I can see why it was included but "make your own destiny" was pretty much Walt's thing too

Right, but that underscored the gulf between Walt and Jesse in how they handled their own making.

My reaction exactly. The flashback right at the end confirmed something I was thinking for much of the film (and contrary to a couple of posts earlier in the thread): the women in Breaking Bad were generally excellent, and their absence here was really felt.

clemenza, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:54 (four years ago) link

(Talking about El Camino, if that's not clear.)

clemenza, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:55 (four years ago) link

one month passes...

Watched El Camino a second time coming right out of Breaking Bad. Improved a little, not much--at least it made more sense.

One thing I didn't understand: where on the Breaking Bad timeline is that meeting between Jesse and Walt in the diner (where Walt suggests Jesse go to college)?

Robert Forster's fees seem a little exorbitant. I mean, he's basically printing up a few fake IDs, no?

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2020 05:23 (four years ago) link

He sets people up with an entire new identity, with a false history and social security number etc, and physically smuggles criminals across state lines & international borders. How much would you charge?

don't care didn't ask still clappin (sic), Thursday, 9 January 2020 06:28 (four years ago) link

The diner scene is after they get stuck in the desert trying to cook the first giant batch and the battery dies on the RV.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 9 January 2020 06:55 (four years ago) link

There was the shot of the RV...That makes sense; I thought Walt looked more like he did towards the end, and that threw me a bit.

I would very aggressively underprice my competitors in the new-identity business; $149.00, something like that. And I'd follow Saul's lead with splashy commercials and my picture on billboards and benches all around town. (I mean, I really don't have any anything to base an estimate on, but I would think $10-25,000 would be ample?)

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2020 13:14 (four years ago) link

It’s stated when forster’s character is first introduced in the series that the price increases exponentially based on the amount of heat iirc; by the time they’ve killed a cop and are all over national tv the risk is pretty big so it makes sense that he charges the premium rate

Baby yoda laid an egg (wins), Thursday, 9 January 2020 13:29 (four years ago) link

I got the sense that his thing was not a one-man operation, he has to get fake SSNs and open up bank accounts and the like

frogbs, Thursday, 9 January 2020 14:21 (four years ago) link

Definitely seems to be a one-man operation. So maybe Jesse and Walt are the extreme cases, and someone just trying to escape debt or a bad marriage or something would get a rate closer to what I suggested.

Robert Forester is so good, in both the series and El Camino. One of the saddest moments in the series is when Walt offers him $10,000 just to hang out for an extra hour (and Forester takes it--he's a stand-up guy, but he never romanticizes the purely mercenary part of his job).

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2020 14:32 (four years ago) link

Misread frogbs's post...I don't know; it seemed pretty much one-man to me, although I suppose he'd need some outside help hidden from view.

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2020 14:34 (four years ago) link

What was his fee? 200k? I would say if I was new I would start at 50-75k for the package he was doing.

Yerac, Thursday, 9 January 2020 17:46 (four years ago) link

Clemenza, you’ll have time when the rewatch is over - set up a working SSN & see how much that costs you, then move on to establishing a fake identity with a backstory that employers can research which holds up, see how much that costs you, and price out the time you spent on each as a one-man-operation. Add on the losses from closing your vacuum shop down for a week to drive to Alaska and back, with or without people-smuggling involved, but including petrol & motels & meals. It’ll be a fun spreadsheet project!

don't care didn't ask still clappin (sic), Thursday, 9 January 2020 18:04 (four years ago) link

He didn't really set Walt up with a new identity thought, he just bunged him in a cabin in the middle of nowhere.

chap, Thursday, 9 January 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link

(xpost) First I'll have to get the proper training in vacuum-cleaner repair, but if I can look after that, this sounds like a worthwhile project--will report back.

Occurred to me that I would’ve liked breaking bad if it were a 110 minute movie but as a TV show I got sick of it in season 2 somewhere.
