why are we talking about this in this thread again

― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, October 24, 2019 11:58 AM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

I genuinely felt bad interrupting the rollout with my bathetic "whither ILM" musings, but honestly I'll talk about this wherever people want I swear

Replying to your question from the other thread, rob: most definitely! I'm trying to make a systemic point about the triumph of pop in general but there is obviously room for greater diversity within it as well.

Trolling aside, I don't disagree with you, Kate, but bringing up this issue on the poll's margins is fair game imho, as is expecting more from music nerds, regardless of their cultural background. I don't know if you voted, incidentally, but you're precisely the kind of ILXor I expect to come up with a fascinating and genuinely diverse ballot.

― pomenitul

i don't expect anything from music nerds except for them to like what they like, which people around here are pretty good at. and nah, i haven't even voted in this latest one, i'm pretty busy with other stuff, and my "diversity" mainly at this point has gotten to the point of my name-dropping records nobody else has ever heard of. seriously, what am i going to do, submit a ballot and figure out how to "rank" repetitor's "Sve što vidim je prvi put" in the context of all records released between 2000 and 2009? like i can even remember it exists when i'm not actively listening to it? if i want to promote the record, i can just namedrop it here, right? or i have a thread where i randomly post stuff like that every week or so.

again, i do believe that democracy has its uses but turning people on to serbian punk records or whatever isn't one of them.

Spironolactone T. Agnew (rushomancy), Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:49 (four years ago) link

honestly you folks are the only people i talk to who don't view my enthusiasm for serbian punk records or whatever as sort of a wacky sitcom running joke. and i'm sure there are some folks here who regard it as such but are too polite to call it out.

Spironolactone T. Agnew (rushomancy), Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:52 (four years ago) link

lately i'm just not interested in most polls anymore on ilm but ilm is still useful for me bc there are many individual posters with tastes who recommend stuff or submit ballots to polls that turn me onto things i like so polls are useful i guess but i don't care about the rollout just looking at particular poster's nominations and ballots.

I’m absolutely mystified when anyone professes love for Destroyer. Everything about Bejar’s music bugs the living shit out of me. I feel like it puts the lie to Wilde’s dictum that all bad [art] is sincere. He just comes off like the high-school poet-rebel who ended up as an obnoxious, pretentious drunk in middle age.
