I googled them to see who they were and apparently the internet is mad™ about perfectly acceptable 90s style pop rock

Trying to remember if J. Lo's last appearance consisted mostly of sketches about how incredibly hot she was

Seriously what was going on with that

You know what's better than watching Saturday Night Live live on Saturday night? Watching old Saturday Night Lives. Ran through the first three episodes of season 12 last night. Lorne's second year back, with the all-new (aside from season 11 carryovers Lovitz and Dunn and Miller) 'classic '80s' cast. Man, they sure started strong right out of the gate, certainly moreso than all of the other all-new casts I've seen. Secret MVP: Kevin Nealon. Here's to hoping Lorne quickly got over his obsession with having Sam Kinison and Buster Poindexter make regular appearances on the show.

are these streaming somewhere? that was my favorite period (actually, the pre-Michaels return period was my favorite)

As annoying as all of the fawning over J.Lo was in, like, three skits in a row, the last half of the ep was a total dead zone. Like, I don’t even get what was supposed to be funny about some of these sketches.

Still running through s12. It's really stunning how good this cast was from the start. Halfway through the season, I've already seen probably a dozen sketches that wind up in every 'best of' clip show that touches on this era. And I feel like a broken record but goshdarnit I just prefer SNL as more of a variety show that doesn't fill every non-musical moment with wackiness. Like it's okay if sketches sometimes flirt with poignancy, or if a short film is just weird and somewhat impenetrable and clearly not interested in laughs. Let this shit breathe a little and it feels alive rather than desperate.

I would love to be one of Eddie's writers this week.

"if a short film is just weird and somewhat impenetrable and clearly not interested in laughs"

they haven't done this in a long time, but these things used to be some of the coolest things on the show (like the Gilda Radner one).

didn't watch JLo but did watch this week's, which was, again, ok. Though revisiting mind-reading-dog didn't work at all the second time. best segment was the Macy's ad.

Bowen Yang seems to be standing out a lot, considering it's his first year.

akm, Monday, 16 December 2019 21:31 (four years ago) link

I feel I would be remiss in failing to point out that season 12 (1986-7) is also, at times, kinda shockingly regressive. Like Carvey's Chinese chicken salesman that for some reason doesn't feature among his list of recurring characters even though we're already up to an ill-advised three appearances halfway through the season. Let's just say there's some material here that you're never likely to see in any future retrospectives.

Welcome to the Sandwich Trough (Old Lunch), Monday, 16 December 2019 22:58 (four years ago) link

All of Bowen Yang's characters are the same character. They all speak the same way and all make the same 'funny' faces. All that changes from skit to skit are the costumes and the lines.

I feel like there was a backlog of jokes that they couldn't really do right before because their cast was not that diverse, so Bowen Yang is doing a lot of those jokes now and skewing it younger. I was a little surprised that all the dirty jokes in the Sara Lee sketch got on air.

Yerac, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 01:03 (four years ago) link

Whether or not you find Thompson funny it’s hard to argue his one note isn’t “saying something in a funny voice with odd emphases” + meta/winking isn’t-this-funny smile

Not as sad as Murphy's career post-1990. I mean, based on his track record, what's to anticipate?

I'm more interested because of the animosity between Murphy and the producers (Lorne and ?). May be some underlying tension in the skits. (Or he may want to make nice to get his career back on track.)
