Dueling Fuzz & Tremolo on "The Great Airplane Strike" = Chef's Kiss!

a bevy of supermodels, musicians and Lena Dunham (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 00:05 (four years ago) link

i made a tape for a friend a few years back — called “heavy paul” — that was just all the groovy fuzzed out tracks spanning a handful of records.

when those fuckers get heavy it’s pretty sweet

Only recent became aware that “Kicks” was written as a message to Gerry Goffin.

Currently spinning a MONO Greatest Hits (with the book!) I found for $1 this weekend.

Over a year late on this, but that was an awesome find. The original mono mixes crush the stereo mixes and '80s/'90s-era remixes. A few companies have started putting them all back into print in the last few years. All the mono 45's have been done, and they're getting to the albums too (the good ones). Most people will probably fine with the hits, but I've grown to appreciate Revolution! and quite a few deep cuts. There's probably two or three dozen tracks that I'd consider keepers.

I listened to a 30-track compilation called Kicks 1963-1972; the only song of theirs I'd ever encountered on radio or TV was the title track, plus a couple on the Nuggets box.
Mark Lindsay's voice regularly crosses the line from cocky to smarmy for me, and the hooks are OK but not great. I was impressed by their shamelessness about copying whatever had been on the AM radio six months earlier. Probably the only keeper for me is "Louie Go Home". I'm glad to know more about them now, anyway.

I own that comp and have the exact same reactions. I do like their "Steppin' Stone" better than the Monkees'.

Some English band covered “Louie Go Home” (possibly the only UK cover of a Paul Revere & The Raiders tune):

Nope. "Louie Go Home" was also by Davie Jones & The King Bees.

Heard the singer had to change his name. wonder whatever happened to him?

Just across this pretty good cover version of “I Can See For Miles” by Mark Lindsay and Wayne Kramer released as a digital single last year, apparently from a 2012 Who tribute album.

Apparently Mark Lindsay really needed to potty, and mean old Ed wouldn't let him...

PR&tR defy "Classic or Dud", they are equally both.

Mark Lindsay has a show on the Underground Garage channel on SiriusXM that focuses on all sorts of American Rock'n'Soul, and it's weird to hear him spout (probably scripted) enthusiasm for Apples In Stereo.

They could be a pretty good band - not a great one, but not one deserving of complete dismissal either. The original mono mixes are worth seeking out because all the stereo versions of their music have kind of sucked (either vintage or remixed). It was only in the last decade or so that a lot of them were finally made available in the digital age. (I think the Midnight Ride LP is really the only one left that truly deserves a mono reissue.)

Best heard via compilations, I just made my own - one single disc, almost all original mono mixes, and all that I need from them:

drum intro to the track that follows on that album, "Ride on my Shoulder" = decent sample fodder.
