quit being a douche and go listen to some obscure buttscratch metal, scott

"and scott, what about madlib do you find boring?"

i'm done trolling. this is a fan thread. i'll let it be. i honestly hadn't thought of the guy in years until i saw this thread.

scott seward, Saturday, 20 June 2009 22:59 (fourteen years ago) link

although now i'm tempted...

As a lolbritisher I have to mention that Operation Doomsday was given 5 stars in HHC (cos lol fuck the source; hhc only hiphop magazine who's opinion mattered) and treated as pretty much a cult classic over here.

So Madvillainy wasn't some new, just based on hype bullshit. Anyone who cared about hip-hop press over here had already fallen in love with doom or madlib long before madvillain; the album was just a combination of the many things to love about both of them instead of just being lol juggernauts of indie hiphop together. maybe if i weren't quite drunk I'd be able to say this better (and anyway, i voted champion sounds!)

Champion Sounds is totally the most British album title. Good job! Or, good on you! as those people seem to say.

one of the world's most inventive beatmakers

too much makin', not enough beats.

i like seeing threads like this though because i like knowing ilx is more lol-indie friendly than it lets on. it provides cover for all of our indie crushes.

well there's only a handful of people on this thread. and one of them is a hater.

Scott, may I ask out of pure curiosity which of these you've heard?

The Unseen for me.

Listened to Dilla's Donuts over the weekend. It's good but I'm almost convinced the Beat Konducta series does it one better. Not prepared to stick by that opinion in the long term... just saying.

simply don't understand the appeal of quasimoto. shit sounds like a joke

YNQ stuff can be pretty interesting but i haven't had much of a motivation to listen to it. same goes for 'shades of blue.' think i sold back a few of those albums.

madvilliany is great tho, but yea i'm not sure if it's better than other stuff like VV1, etc

have not heard any of the beat konducta series

mark cl, Monday, 22 June 2009 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

simply don't understand the appeal of quasimoto.

really good beats. 2nd not as consistent tho.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

went for 2nd quas album, could've gone for beat konduktah v1&2 or 5&6 though. definitely think king geedorah is better than madvillainy, which is still hells of strong.

it's the nuclear sex apocalypse, dude. i mean, c'mon. (stevie), Monday, 22 June 2009 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

uh yeah Geedorah>>>>Madvillain

I'll rep for the Sound Directions album. By no means my favorite here but it's great and deserves at least a mention here. Pretty relaxed vibe all the way through, nice for late nights.

Anyone heard the Jackson Conti project?

Jackson Conti = eh. I might've ripped a track or two, but not that hot.

fittingly close

ianmaxwell, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 23:07 (fourteen years ago) link

is it the bleh lyrics that causes that Lootpack album to be overlooked??

for real

h8 that kinda battle rap-for-the-sake-of-rapping rap

ianmaxwell, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

agreed but the beats are so good and consistent that who the fuck is listening to the lyrics!

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 00:07 (fourteen years ago) link

but i'm the type to listen to a million "jah is the mighty ruler" reggae tracks and not give a fuck

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 00:09 (fourteen years ago) link

uhhh the lyrics and vocal delivery on the lootpack album are top motherfucking notch. i would complain about champion sound not getting more votes but i didn't even vote for it so whatevah. i found the unseen pretty uninteresting, i guess i should go and listen again.

didn't know Wildchild's mom was on ilm. welcome!

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 00:21 (fourteen years ago) link

so you guys are seriously saying that you don't like the rapping on this song?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_EK3uYTIN0

(whenimondamic starts at around 1:07)

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 00:27 (fourteen years ago) link

thought that would be the track you would point to, if any. was the only one i could recall any good lines from. it's well done no doubt, but ian's complaint would still apply. mind you, it'd apply to about 85% of rap. not saying wildchild isn't a good mc from a tech standpoint, but shit gets boring esp over a full album.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 01:04 (fourteen years ago) link

lootpack rapping is so much better than champion sound rapping tho

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 07:47 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think ian's complaint is really valid. i've never not like an album because of lyrics content or theme. and as far as subject matters go, is "im-rich-im-the-best-i-fuck-alot-of-women-i sell-alot-of-drugs" really that much better than "non-freestylin-mc's-are-whack-i-dont-smoke-weed-madlib-makes-cool-beats"?

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 08:25 (fourteen years ago) link

why would you rap over madlib beats if you don't smoke weed?

on a technical level sure, but good rapping is not hardly of champion sound imo

i don't think ian's complaint is really valid.

it his to him.

i've never not like an album because of lyrics content or theme.

me neither! well maybe some superextreme nerdrap. i voted for lootpack.

don't get him wrong, he likes the smell of it, but needing it and preferring it are 2 difft. things

Upping this topic for lack of a better place to ask a question on the DJ Rels album:

What would it get classified as?

I know very little about these electronic sub-sub-genres. Broken beat? Nujazz? Early dubstep?

Please enlighten me.

Austin, Sunday, 2 March 2014 01:37 (ten years ago) link

DJ Rels' Theme for a Broken Soul is perhaps the greatest leap from expectations. The album was inspired by, and in homage to, the West London scene responsible for the short lived “broken beat” scene. Depending on who you talk to DJ Rels & Theme for a Broken Soul is either Madlib's greatest work, his worst, or a pretty damn good experiment from a producer who refuses to do the same thing over and over again.

Ahh, sorry.

I dunno. I just wanted to see a bit more discussion on the album because I've gone back to it in recent days.
