What was I supposed to get out of that TCJ article other than the original Shazam was super goofy?

v confusing that Mads starred in two different movies called Arctic and Polar this year

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 17:22 (four years ago) link

8 billion xposts wow holy fuck slow down y'all

Fun fact: the Shazam! film (aka the film about the DC superhero named Captain Marvel) was in theaters at the same time as the Captain Marvel film which, as I learned, may have created a great deal of confusion among those old enough to remember when the DC version was more casually referred to as Captain Marvel. I have to assume something about those overlapping releases was intentional but I don't know to what end.

idk, it's that Lars Von Trier shit where its an art film with all the the totally unnecessary blood and totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation cinema but its there to "make you think." Plus theres like tons of "folk horror" that's better with allegories and better with story and not just a laundry list of gross shit/weird vibes

I also have a natural aversion to anything in 2019 that treats human sexuality as something S O S E R I O U S. real will ferrell and rachel dratch in the hot tub vibes

haven't seen / don't care about Jojo but for a sense of the case against:

I will probably regret this in about 15 minutes

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:36 (four years ago) link

other xp to djp: just that the film takes everything that made captain marvel/shazam great and roundfiles it in favor of sadism and marvel-meets-Big attitude

damn, nv otm

i didn't get any of that from hagazussa whiney but this wouldn't be the first time i've talked about this film with someone and felt like they watched something different

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

edit: before you yell at me in the comments, consider this: i am right, and you're actually wrong

yeah not reading that review

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

Haven't/won't see that film, but review is almost certainly right.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

ulysses, I mean, I think "Art of Self-Defense" is a good send-up/critique of modern machismo/getting redpilled

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

xpost those two things don't go together

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link

Obviously, I understand ppl taking a hardline stance against the Nazi hahas movie, but if you're at all into Great Dictator/To Be or Not to Be/Blazing Saddles vibes then it's p good

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:46 (four years ago) link

also not the greatest look that Esther only responded to the people in the comments who were complete morons and ignored some of the more nuanced comments, including by other Jews who reminded Esther that "we aren't a monolith and you don't speak for me".

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link

which, tbf, she never suggested in the review itself, but it came up in the thread

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:49 (four years ago) link

is this the thread to pile on some Letterboxd rando

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:49 (four years ago) link

(also I didn't even like the movie that much!)

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:51 (four years ago) link

Genuine hooray for humorless murder in films.

Brad - yeah, I think Whiney might have actually watched a completely different film. I'd get if some find it boring, but too serious? Too much nudity? Too much blood?

Glad I avoided anything Marvel, Ken Loach, bad looking zombie films and I know Ocean's Eight was last year but fuck films about getting off a plane and walking through sliding doors into a foyer in a swanky swishy suit, fuck them forever.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 6 December 2019 17:54 (four years ago) link

Lol have you seen the last Rick and Morty ep?

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link

i wouldn't say hagazussa was one of the worst films of the year but yeah i didn't enjoy it. i certainly didn't love it as much as the horror thread did.

na (NA), Friday, 6 December 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

I've barely seen any Rick & Morty, but I gather from the synopsis that it makes fun of heist stories in the recent episode.

I think those Hustle tv shows, Gone In 60 Seconds, and Confidence (2003) possibly fit into this niche. Do some people really love these?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 6 December 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

Those two really really stupid ones with Woody Harrelson et al are the absolute worstest

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 December 2019 18:15 (four years ago) link

gone in 60 seconds was fun. I think? can't remember now.

akm, Friday, 6 December 2019 18:16 (four years ago) link

I've got the original Gone in 60 Seconds which is pretty draggy when they're not racing cars but at least it doesn't have Bacon Cage in it

Seven Psychopaths one of them? I haven't seen it but I liked In Bruges so I'd be a tad more optimistic for it.

Always found the film of Get Shorty annoying in a similar way to some of the films I listed.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 6 December 2019 18:49 (four years ago) link

i expected to hate biggest little farm and i ended up liking it.. i thought it illustrated some complex ideas about ecosystems pretty well and the movie as a whole felt more lived-in than the super-wholesome vibe put off by the trailer. of course any movie about food production that doesn't talk about the money backing it and doesn't admit that capitalism is a big part of the problem is lying somewhere.

IT pt 2 was a real piece of shit and like 3 hours of it

ingredience (map), Friday, 6 December 2019 19:35 (four years ago) link

I liked the first hour of IT 2, then was just bored. most of my friends, who I expected to hate it, since they were hardcore book fans, ate it up and got defensive about all criticism of it. such a weird reaction to such a forgettable movie.

master of nuggets (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 December 2019 19:36 (four years ago) link

the gayxploitation opening was so fucking stupid and badly handled and the worst part of the movie though.

ingredience (map), Friday, 6 December 2019 19:40 (four years ago) link

it sounds like it was an awful opening BUT I do support Xavier Dolan dying.....torn

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 19:41 (four years ago) link

dying ONSCREEN I should specify

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 19:42 (four years ago) link

haha. a friend of mine told me he sat next to someone who cheered on the hate crime scene. any movie that's going to serve that up for knuckle-draggers is garbage imo.

ingredience (map), Friday, 6 December 2019 19:46 (four years ago) link

oh jesus

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 19:47 (four years ago) link

Seven Psychopaths one of them?

No I meant the "magicians do magic heists" movies, you'd think it was impossible to be sub-Nolan but apparently not

éminence rose et jaune (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 December 2019 19:56 (four years ago) link

Xpost i felt sick at that scene but found out it apparently came from the book.

Glad nobody did that at my showing.

Velvet Buzzsaw
Pet Sematary
Rocketman
Judy

I was apparently in the vast minority who thought It: Chapter 2 was better than the (pretty awful) first part.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:02 (four years ago) link

what was so bad about judy ;_;

ingredience (map), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:03 (four years ago) link

I'm biased against the genre.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:04 (four years ago) link

haha yeah i don't like the biopic genre either but i thought it was weird / interesting / deeply depressing and r.z. doing her best wounded animal throughout was something else.

ingredience (map), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:11 (four years ago) link

There were points I was caught up somewhere in between rolling my eyes and wiping mist away from them, which means it at least flirted with camp a few times.

temporarily embarrassed thousandaire (Eric H.), Friday, 6 December 2019 20:15 (four years ago) link

xp back to whiney: i thought the filmmaking and the script for Art of Self Defense were so immediately, egregiously bad that I turned it off shortly after he went to the dojo.
i'm gonna take a crazy leap here and suggest the people who beat him up were from the dojo, no?
