poor piglet

opden gnash (imago), Monday, 3 February 2020 09:24 (four years ago) link

how much bad feedback for yr discernible posting style is required before you start having second thoughts about yr performance of self in everyday ILX life

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:36 (four years ago) link

🧐

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:38 (four years ago) link

What if your discernible posting style consists of never having second thoughts about anything?

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:38 (four years ago) link

Just site-ban him and him alone, ffs. Problem solved.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:39 (four years ago) link

I love how you take the high ground on this dude.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:40 (four years ago) link

Was trying to some sort of 'xyzzz delenda est' pun (how do you say 'perma-banned' in latin?), but it would work much better if it was imago I was against. Thinking of switching sides, but nah.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:59 (four years ago) link

comes delendus est

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:01 (four years ago) link

(comrade must be destroyed)

Of course the fact I know Latin means I've been scheduled for processing

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

Pom how do you say perma banned in Latin, don't disappoint us on this

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

You'll be going to the countryside right away, with your bourgeois language skills.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:04 (four years ago) link

Did I say I was a Latin scholar?

Maybe something like 'interdictum in perpetuum'? Sounds bad-ass, actually.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

google says "ban permanens" which is massively disappointing

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:06 (four years ago) link

interdicum in perpetuum sounds appropriately biblical

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:07 (four years ago) link

You speak at least two Romance languages, you’re probably able to fake it enough (at least for a pleb like me not to know better)

hyds (gyac), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:08 (four years ago) link

Thought you had some serious multi-lingo skills, Pom. Imago's skillset is a bit like our PM, more making it up as he goes along bullshitter type.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:08 (four years ago) link

I don't see what the problem is here, once Comrade Alphabet has racked up enough FPs he'll be banned, you, of all people, should know that, Fred.

Only for a month

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

Fred, you're not very good at zinging our comrade, watch and learn

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

Knowledge of Romance languages does help, true. Latin grammar is a mad science unto itself tho.

xps

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

And the reason this thread was revived is that it's the third time in a couple of weeks - I think - where the behaviour of xyzzz has caused people to call for him being thread banned. Except never just him, always a group of people. It's quite interesting that nobody ever just goes 'get rid of the problem poster' but always has to both sides it.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:12 (four years ago) link

Only for a month

You've got to start somewhere.

x-post: Nah, just get it over with and fix the problem once and for all

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:13 (four years ago) link

It’s fine if alphie is banned, he’ll just move into one of his alts like me or MR Seumas Milne and continue posting as he normally does.

calzzzzzino logging on tomorrow

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:14 (four years ago) link

interdicto means forbidden, which applies to actions not people

you want something more like banishment or casting out or being sent into exile, masculine singular gerundive form thereof

banished: expulsus, exemptus, excisus, profugus, extorris, ejectus
exiled: profugus, extorris
driven out: expulsus, eiectus, ejectus, extorris, exactus

other possible verbs (mostly with the suggestion of being physically chucked out): eructo, propello, apstergo, sepono, paello, pello, excutio, emitto

since banishment was an actual legal thing in the republic there must be a correct technical term of legal art, since the roman entity was a very legalistic one (even in the empire except by then murder was probably the preferred option) (i can't find my v small latin dictionary bcz lol a bulb isn't working in the right part of my flat) and plus on-line latin research is notoriously fucking useless

Makes sense, mark, although one may be interdictum from posting.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link

read some effing ovid:
http://web.colby.edu/ovid-censorship/exile/history-of-roman-exile/

(turns out "aquae et ignis Interdictio" is a banishment-related thing tho it has a heavily symbolic framing)

mark s, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link

Tbf is being permabanned (from posting) the same thing as being banished? Lurking remains an option for the permabanned of ILX whereas banishment from Rome is more than just a sentence of non-participation.

the phrase "Codex Justinianus, PDF format" is (a) intrinsically amusing and (b) dragging me further down a rabbit hole i shd possibly be resisting *jojns the federalist society*

it may be that there isn't an exact equivalent, pom (the translation of peter rabbit into egyptian hieroglyphs has several footnotes admitting to approxations)

lumen (esby), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

LBI - I am not trolling actually.

The vast majority of posts from myself (as I was called to be thread banned by a poster I hardly interact with, a tantrum for real) on the Berners thread has been info as we get it from twitter. Mordy posted the Iowa turn out info many hours after I posted the same on the Berners thread. I followed the story first thing by using ilx and twitter.

Fwiw there isn't one in French and Romanian either, so that would be my amateurish guess as well.

The cognate verb 'bannir' comes close but it doesn't serve quite the same purposes in French.

Anyway, props for the quality chime-in.

the stringray equivalent of banishment is AQUATRAZ iirc:
