someone could use this thread as the jumping-off point for a sundance-award-winning documentary. looking for wayne.

(roger ebert would say it "raises more questions than it answers about the line between public and private in the internet age." gawker would call it "sorrow and the pity for the myspace generation." dr. morbius and armond white would hate it. wayne would get a miller lite ad.)

one of the philly ilxors should stake out the king of prussia hooters and wait for wayne's inevitable return...

i changed my mind, the documentary should just be called king of prussia

Or maybe that should be the title of the recurring weekly thread!

okay, i WENT to west chester university for a semester, and have been to a few extremely lame parties in a friend's apartment right across from the university, and i've been to the KOP Hooters and i drive by it often. i could easily show this pic (and entire thread) to a number of people i know and could probably get some answers. however... why? isn't it more fun this way?

No, please do it! We want to get to the bottom of this! We may feel all empty and purposeless after everything's solved, like someone who's tried to conquer the North Pole for his whole life and finally succeeds in it, but isn't it so with every great journey? There'll be new adventures ahead of us still!

It's striking that after some 700 posts that have elicited stacks of information about Diehl and his friends, we still know literally nothing about Wayne, except that his name might possibly be Loftus.

Diehl comes across as a bit of two-dimensional jerk, albeit one with a certain jock-type charisma that attracts some girls. If he wanted to, Diehl could probably set up a threesome with the two girls. Wayne is painfully lacking in any charsima, jock-type or otherwise. He seems so different from Diehl that I'm guessing they're not friends, but that someone else invited Wayne to the party, as suggested up-thread.

I'm also guessing that Wayne is a bit more of an interesting character than Diehl and co. He's not shown in his best light at the Diehl party, because he's a fish out of water, feeling awkward and uncomfortable. He looks like a total loser but he's just more of a quiet, introspective type. The evidence for the prosecution is of course the Hooters t-shirt. But that could be a)not reflecting his real character but an attempt to ingratiate himself into the redneck culture in which he finds himself, or b)he might have a weekend kitchen job at Hooters. Unlike Diehl, Wayne hasn't gone straight from school into the army. He's probably studying at a nearby college. I think he might even have a girlfriend, although she's going to be a bit plainer and weightier than the two girls in the source photo.

Can I just say I was feeling like total shit yesterday - had a terrible cold - could not function on any level - accept to sit wrapped in a blanket at the computer staring like a fool at the screen - but this thread totally cured me. To-day I am feeling much better...I thank you all.

And, back in 1981 (different bedroom/different t-shirt (probably iron Maiden) but same sitting on the bed feeling totally out of it) I WAS Wayne (Tommy), and it all turned out good in the end.

Did anyone every figure what the "DH" letters referred to?

Obviously, the local high school. Definitely local, I say, because this is definitely in Mom's house:

I don't think we're going to get any closer to discovering anything about Wayne by examining the minutiae of the Diehl world. Wayne is clearly not a part of that scene, or only very peripherally. The "two-beer queer" comment underlines the point.

Wayne looks like Diehl's inferior, since Diehl is this tall, rangy guy who clearly appeals to the women of his entourage. Diehl is basically a smalltown jock. But Diehl's education stopped at high school, and since coming back cashed-up from Iraq, he's been unemployed and, judging from his myspace profile, in no hurry to get a job either ("I dont like to work so I dont"). His prospects aren't really too great. His best friend Tommy Turnball also never went to college and works as a labourer. Turnball describes his life thusly: "I usually just do the same shit every day, work, drink, sleep, repeat." As for intellectual stimulus, he boasts that "I have actually read a book I didn't have to: Black Hawk Down." We're talking about guys with very narrow horizons here. And Diehl's tour of duty in Iraq probably only narrowed his further. He'll probably never escape his home town and will end up in some dead-end job, still drinking with his pal Tommy and mooning for the camera.

Wayne, on the other hand, looks like a college kid to me. He's doing computer studies or something. He may not look too great now, but in ten years' time, he's going to be doing a lot better than Diehl.

lupine luck, Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

come on guys, wayne is not introspective and quiet. he is clearly the loud-in-an-obnoxious-not-funny-way guy who thinks he's a bit of a party animal.

evidence.
http://diehliniraq.com/v-web/gallery/albums/Diehls-Party/awkward.sized.jpg
probably just made some blokeish comments "i like me hooters i do" or "fancy a threesome laaadies?" and the girls turn away in disgust, see the way laurel did a "Tim from The Office"'s face, like when keith the accountant bloke talks about giving girls orgasms.

Unlike Diehl, Wayne hasn't gone straight from school into the army. He's probably studying at a nearby college.

Several of Diehl's friends are studying at Delaware County Community College right now (which is how they met Jenna and Danielle and Ashlee, who are a couple years younger and not graduates of Upper Darby Senior High School) -- so this wouldn't be atypical.

perhaps it's a fancy dress party, "you came as a doofus too? oh man"

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Your reading of those photos is a little harsh, Ken. I read him as pretty shy and awkward in the infamous three-on-the-bed shot. As for the one where he's got two beers, obviously he's gallantly offered to get up and get one of the girls a beer.

This photo brings out the Wayne's vulnerability. Come on, he doesn't look boorish at all here:

lupine logic, Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:38 (eighteen years ago) link

At this point, I actually do find myself interested in Diehl's world in all of its pretty vapidity. Apart from the Slayer shirt that the guy with Laurel (whom I still can't ID) is wearing, I never would've guessed that all of these guys seem to be into metal first and foremost. (Their girlfriends and other female friends they associate with mostly listen to Top 40.)

This thread is fucking crazy psycho stalkerdom of the highest order, you realise.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:44 (eighteen years ago) link

No, no its not.

Stalkerdom is when you enter into someone else's world uninvited. Like if killy were to actually go and show this picture - or any of the related others - to someone at the KOP Hooters or West Chester to see if we could get some more info.

As it is, any of the info we've gathered has simply been by taking advantage of the information THEY posted in the PUBLIC domain about themselves. We've just had a bit more fun than usual b/c we have nothing better to do during the day.

I find nothing inherently wrong about this. I find it quite amusing.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i knew a guy just like him, who's from Greenback, Tennessee
i met him at a cafe, it was a gig in old city
he didn't like his hometown, where every crack's a ho.
but he is stuck there in greenback, cos there's nowhere else to go.

he was once in love with a girl, it was her sweet 13
her papa offered him cash to leave, so he'd never be seen
our hero took the money, and had these words to tell
"well ah'm taking yaah money, but ah'm taking yaah girl as well!"

the story somehow turned, into something about his hand
as was talking his hand would suddenly extend
over the face of this girl, who was terrified to bits
to this date i still don't know the reason for any of it

as he was telling the story, a man had chipped his tooth
when our hero saw this, he had his shirt removed
revealing on his belly, as smooth and bright as the moon
"well i've been injured as well, here's a gunshot wound!"

whatever that people have put on the Internet in full knowledge that anyone can access them.

to be fair this argument doesn't really work - they most probably putting them on the Internet with the intention that random people would access their details and collate all their websites together etc.

like you don't walk down the street thinking ooooh people can take photographs of me and follow me and work out where i live and work etc, i mean they CAN (have the means to) do it, but it doesn't mean it's not stalking!

but stalking for fun is fun!

There is a huge difference between taking a picture of someone walking down the street, and joking with some other folks about a picture posted on the internet.

We're engaging in a perfectly legit, free form of entertainment. Its no biggie.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I think some of you are projecting a bit too much onto "Wayne", saying "Oh, he's got a bright future in electronics with a fat girlfriend while his buddies suffer from G.W.S. and fall in line at the unemployment office."

It's very clear that Wayne is a stoner dude that hangs out at Hooters and can easily be talked into buying beer for a bunch of underage kids as long as he leer at the ladies (and possibly nintendo.)

Wayne might be a lost cause but I'm beginning to think Diehl really did have a threesome with those two girls. This from Megan, posted on diehliniraq.com: "by the way laurel says hello and she misses you very much her married man... but really only in her dreams cause ur my man. anyway, if u ever get lonely just remember ur special surprise from me and laurel...lol WOW." I mean, is there any other way to read this?

but we have already, haven't we ?

as for the threesome, you might be on something here... but on the other hand, she shows some jealousy ("only in her dreams cause ur my man") so that doesn't fit too well with a threesome.
maybe the surprise was a lesbian thing between her and laurel ?
(deep exegesis !)

I have been to this party, and hung with these dudes: they are a perfect cross section of a lot of the guys I knew in HS. If they are anything like my friend N__, say, then their music taste will be something like:

Zep
Floyd
Beatles
Pantera
Allman Bros.
Dave Matthews
NOT Phish
Biggy
Metallica

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

First and foremost: older brother music dominates. But, since we are where we are, older bro is not turning you on to obscure 90s indie or whatever, he is turning you on to what "Wolfy," his older buddy, turned HIM onto when he was in 9th grade. Which means that you're getting this weird trickle down effect that ensure that bands that were big in the early 90s are STILL popular and canonical today.

Also: Sublime. How could I forget?!?!
