This morning we got on the 2 train at Sterling St and there was a bit of a smell but I thought it wasn't worth worrying about too much as we were only riding two stops but then my wife turned to me and said "Is that man playing with shit?" And sure enough he was: the man opposite was turning a turd in his palms. So we changed carriages at the next station.

Carriages? Blimey

Sorry: I'm British and in the horror of the recollection forgot you don't say carriages.

Alba, Sunday, 23 February 2020 07:23 (four years ago) link

You don’t say “carriages” for the Tube either! But we’re losing focus on what’s important here.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 23 February 2020 11:35 (four years ago) link

You don't?

Alba, Sunday, 23 February 2020 12:08 (four years ago) link

I’m positive there’s a historical reason why the London Underground calls its train carriages “cars” - but have zero recollection how I know this apart from the usual way i.e. having dreamt it

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 23 February 2020 12:23 (four years ago) link

Maybe an episode of Sherlock, Tracer?

Alba, Sunday, 23 February 2020 13:15 (four years ago) link

LU may call them cars, but passengers always call them carriages.

ugh. I decided to use Staten Island, SI Live as the newsource for that question. "...requires federal approval due to some roads within the program’s limits receiving federal funding or being considered part of the interstate highway system."

What are the odds there'll be a mass "transit lives matter" movement carried out by white authoritarian-leaning suburbanites across this great nation? No? Nothing? Gosh.

Context: When Cuomo unveiled the new NY state budget earlier this month, his number one boast was that it "includes no new taxes" and "continues to phase in tax cuts". He'd rather let the MTA die than ask his wealthy neighbors to pay a dollar more. https://t.co/5bOxl79DVa

Riding the subway is likely much safer than you thinkhttps://t.co/AKQekKpSq9

In Paris: 0 of the 386 infection clusters between May and July were linked to public transit.

in Tokyo, no virus clusters have been linked to its famously crowded rail lines.

https://gothamist.com/news/mta-a-train-subway-derail-manhattan-8th-ave

An uptown A train derailed inside the 14th Street/8th Avenue subway station in Manhattan this morning. An MTA spokesperson confirmed that one of the train's wheels "went off the track" around 8:15 a.m. According to the MTA, the train hit some debris in the trackbed as it pulled into the station, causing the derailment and cutting power to all four tracks. All passengers were safely evacuated, the MTA said in a statement. The train "hit a few poles," according to a statement from the FDNY. Approximately 30 people were evacuated from the train, with one person sustaining minor injuries, the FDNY said.

An NYPD spokesperson says an unnamed 30-year-old man has been taken into custody by police, who are investigating whether he caused the derailment. The spokesperson had no further details, but police sources tell the Daily News that "a saboteur clamped wooden planks onto the roadbed." He was reportedly subdued by good Samaritans who "held him at the station until cops took him into custody." The News' sources added that the man was "laughing at his accomplishment."

1 - fining people for this is stupid, just tell them they need to wear a mask or escort them off the subway
2 - I'd say about 5% of people on the trains are going without masks now, 10% more are doing the dicknose thing. It's a game of moving from car to car to avoid people, especially when then sit down right next to you
3 - ridership, especially not at peak hours, still feels only about half what I was used to

i mean, good? it's a dumb way to enforce the law. Again, they just need to tell people to put on a mask and escort them off if they refuse.
