I'm genderqueer

so, is it cool when someone who isn't from and doesn't live in a region whose politics are at issue posts on a thread if you agree with their politics, but it's only annoying if they post on the thread when you disagree with their politics?

like, I see a bunch of non-Californians opining on our state politics thread, and I just wanna know if I have the right to be annoyed at them, esp. when they get all sanctimonious

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link

I don't really know what Fred's politics are tbh - and he plainly doesn't know mine - but given that he routinely characterizes posters on the UK politics thread as xenophobic tankies you can see why he's not particularly welcome there.

God knows the UK politics thread is hard enough work without him sticking his oar in.

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

If I started checking my notes here I’d never stop but tl;dr - lol.

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:26 (four years ago) link

To answer your question. Nej.

brb stealing Seattle's water

xps

I get annoyed sometimes, but, like ... this is ilx, and it's not worth making it a thing.

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:27 (four years ago) link

and tbh, it's not nearly as annoying when they post stuff I agree with

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:28 (four years ago) link

😎

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:30 (four years ago) link

doesn't silby live in an adjacent state? do we all live in an adjacent state?

Yerac, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:31 (four years ago) link

I like to call California “South South Seattle”

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:31 (four years ago) link

it depends on how you define "adjacent" -- in the geographical sense, no ... in the political sense, idk

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:32 (four years ago) link

eh, Seattle is like South Vancouver imo

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:33 (four years ago) link

it is ok to be annoyed with any out of region person giving their opinion on yr politics no matter their tone tho might be a bit gauche if they're just humble and asking questions for edification but definitely deserved if there's any kind of performative esp sanctimonious bullshit

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:33 (four years ago) link

but y'know, someone from Seattle having opinions on California politics is geographically similar to someone from say, Denmark having opinions on UK politics

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:34 (four years ago) link

Idg the state/country comparison (if that’s being made). I don’t think that works at all.

median punt (gyac), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:34 (four years ago) link

xp Mordy -- I feel we can put a name to this, and call it "the gabbneb rule"

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:35 (four years ago) link

xp what are your thoughts on all the actual foreigners who live in the UK and who have thoughts about its politics? Or those who live outside it and who also post there who never ever attract any of this? Do you think there might be anything controversial about that at all?

median punt (gyac), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:36 (four years ago) link

ha, i am looking at a map and I think I always place oregon where idaho is.

Yerac, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link

xp what are your thoughts on all the actual foreigners who live in the UK and who have thoughts about its politics?

If you live in the UK, then obv. its politics affect you. If you are an expat, you at least have some familiarity and history with a place ... idk, I am with Mordy, in that if you are an "outside observer" it should entail a certain humility and taking a step back

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:40 (four years ago) link

and how should foreigners living in the UK posting about its politics react to someone living outside the UK calling them (for example) a xenophobe for their constant shitting up the thread?

median punt (gyac), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:43 (four years ago) link

I'm an American, and I follow a fairly isolationist approach to this issue ... not my country, not my thread, not my place to judge

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:45 (four years ago) link

they should call them out on the posts you had second thoughts about and decided not to post - post them here thread

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:46 (four years ago) link

sorry that someone's shitting up your thread tho

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:47 (four years ago) link

What if you live in a neighbouring country that is inordinately affected by the flatulent ripples of a certain other country's general shenanigans. Or if you live in the Middle East.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:50 (four years ago) link

then you should post links to a thousand furious tweets about why the iowa caucus results are taking so long to come in

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:51 (four years ago) link

as in "unban Heave Ho"?

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:51 (four years ago) link

Denmark is not inordinately affected by the flatulent ripples of Bojo's Britain afaict.

Load up your rubber wallets (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:53 (four years ago) link

pretty sure America is the most flatulent and rippling

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:53 (four years ago) link

Which is why Fred is always welcome in US political threads.

Load up your rubber wallets (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

California is home to Cowschwitz fwiw

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

Frantically saturating a given thread with tweets is a good rule of thumb when approaching topics that may in fact exceed your ken.

xps

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

loathe as i am to suggest an additional politics thread (as opposed to a politics board which i support) maybe a US and the World thread series could help fulfill foreigner desires to discuss how the hegemonic superpower impacts them and stop having to worry about every minor gossipy news story to come out of american media about the primaries

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:55 (four years ago) link

Frantically saturating a given thread with tweets is a good rule of thumb when approaching topics that may in fact exceed your ken.

consider that if you find yourself in this situation you have a third choice which is not to post at all

Mordy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:57 (four years ago) link

Nonsense! The aim is to share the gems you've unearthed in your quest for international omniscience.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:58 (four years ago) link

Now you're sounding like me, pom.

Load up your rubber wallets (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

pom, do you like canine poms?

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

Just pointing out yet again I was posting about Scandinavian politics and a uk poster told me I didn't know what I was talking about and should shut the fuck up

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

We've always been on the same wavelength as regards this… most enriching invention.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 22:59 (four years ago) link

Funny you should ask, sarahell. The answer is no.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 23:00 (four years ago) link

Looking forward to you being characterized as doddery old buffer too.

Load up your rubber wallets (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 23:01 (four years ago) link

lol

pom otm re canine poms, they’re horrible. our old dog was 1/4 pom and that was more than enough tbh

median punt (gyac), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 23:02 (four years ago) link

Just pointing out yet again

not to be a dick, but in general, if you start a sentence with this phrase, it is likely you actually don't need to post that sentence, and you aren't going to change anyone's minds.
