common practices i find deeply embarrassing:

addressing new followers, eg "hey new followers! you liked my tweet about x? well i tweet about y too, hope you like y!"

commenting on unfollowers, eg "it's really telling who unfollowed me after i tweeted about y, you prudes must not be able to handle me lol"

obligatory "i don't have a soundcloud but here's this thing you can check out" post-viral tweet

I find these things embarrassing too, but suspect it is because I only have a couple of hundred followers and doubt that even they actually see my tweets. It's mainly a "wisecracking into the howling void" website for me, or else everyone is mortified at my behaviour and opinions but is too polite to say anything, same result.

I have recently fallen out with a low-level twitter celeb who actually followed me, just because he was constantly posting dull questions and I was posting facetious responses, probably for the best all round.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 28 February 2020 14:51 (four years ago) link

I wrote a couple of things on twitter that I wound up feeling moderately embarrassed by, mostly responding to other people's messages. Mostly because I am too earnest. I am incapable of hiding behind the joke cloak so I respond to people as if they were right in front of me. It's probably "embarrassing" to other people too but idk why anyone would be embarrassed on my behalf. Seems like a lite bitchy "bless your heart" move or at worst euphemism for "i am judging u" If/when I see these people again I don't expect them to remember the dumb earnest thing I said. Who cares?!

think of these as opportunities for unfollowing

lag∞n, Friday, 28 February 2020 16:48 (four years ago) link

yeah but after you unfollow you should probably leave a public note on twitter explaining why

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Friday, 28 February 2020 17:05 (four years ago) link

listen i never thought i would have to do this but i did unfollow @largemaoistgrandpa for beginning a tweet with "periodic reminder" i dont want to demonize him and i do believe in restorative justice but the simple fact is his tweets are bad and i dont want to read them anymore, if anyone wants to reach out to me my DMs are open

dyin

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 28 February 2020 17:13 (four years ago) link

The whole "periodic reminder" thing seems like a product of the abrupt nature of the Twitter format. People feel awkward simply making a statement/assertion without any prior framing, so they use that as a pretend lead-in.

got into a conversation with a fellow writer about right wing hate for hillary and i’m pretty sure we’re being swarmed by girlboss-feminism “agents” because he mentioned how people have wanted her dead (not untrue!!)

anyway never tweet

maura, Tuesday, 10 March 2020 11:43 (four years ago) link

if you're on or lurk ilx and/or reddit (and, crucially, have nothing to promote online) there's no point to being on twitter at this point, anything worthwhile (and a ton that isn't) gets reposted

Simon H - that isn't really true, whether that's politics or books.

does twitter have prefab sprout ballot polls, tho?

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 March 2020 14:49 (four years ago) link

the tweets here too are getting me to consider taking a break from ilx :(
that, plus the ramp-up in assholism here lately, which is mostly usa primaries related but it's deeper.
even a politics board (that I could turn off on SNA) wouldn't stop it.
but people here seem to like things how they are (o/w the assholes would get 51d) so it's really just my problem :(

that Menshevik M is a total fucking dunce also (look at the replies, intersectionality "was influenced by Derrida and Foucault", fucking hell)

that is also bad

however I maintain the original tweet that is screenshoted is still mind-blowing

One (with the link) seems a crank, the other one is mocking it. A lot of the replies are a variation of wtf.

Lately I've decided I should report any posts that contain political or factual falsehoods that I find harmful, along with any false or misleading information about COVID. The only problem is, I'm not sure which combination of report reasons I should select for these. Most of the choices are more about causing direct harm to individuals, as opposed to causing confusion and harm with fake information.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 13 April 2020 00:01 (four years ago) link

yeah, they have really fucked up by not just throwing “covid-19 misinformation” in as a category

probably a lot of internal waffling of how to make it a more general use category and what “science” and “medicine” really mean

mh, Monday, 13 April 2020 01:11 (four years ago) link

I feel like the ability to "fact check" bullshit tweets would be very helpful, but I may be deluding myself.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 13 April 2020 01:13 (four years ago) link

"facts" according to whom, though?

sigh

mh, Monday, 13 April 2020 18:32 (four years ago) link

According to me. Obviously there is a subjective element there, but maybe if tweets are egregious enough, vtgey will draw more than just my own attention, and ultimately get some of the worst offenders banned.

I get that this is very quixotic, pie in the sky stuff, but I'm bored.
