Envy usually make the metal poll. in fact a single made last years iirc

I like this recent Ratboys album (posting here b/c it's mentioned above; tho I wouldn't have thought to classify it in one of the thread title's genres).

Some of it reminds a little of old-school Sleepyhead (that dreamy, love-rock feel)... some tracks also have a bit of a Big Thief sound, like if their first album had been even poppier (though it may be the singer's vocal tone that's largely leading me there).

...actually, no, it's more than just her voice. The guitar sound too

ratboys are kind of part of the "scene." if i've ever seen a band play the fest, they belong in this thread

if anyone is nostalgic for catchy hairpin-turn pop-punk, I recommend the new Pears singles

this album in fact absolutely slays

I'm surprised at the BNM for the Dogleg album - it's a fine debut but didn't feel that distinguished to me at least on one listen

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2020 12:48 (four years ago) link

much more up my alley: Wednesday's I Was Trying To Describe You to Someone, found via my Discover playlist. lovely hazy depressive bedroom-and-garage emo with elements of slowcore and some surprising little turns. features a song called "Maura" for extra ILM points.

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2020 13:23 (four years ago) link

the dogleg is very listenable

j., Tuesday, 17 March 2020 01:41 (four years ago) link

i agree w/ Simon ... it's a really good album! and that score is an over-correction. but that's ok.

alpine static, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 05:49 (four years ago) link

if anyone missed it last year, this is a good time to check out Fred Thomas's doom-laden ambient emo maybe-masterpiece Aftering which sounds especially great right now

A couple listens in to that Dogleg album and I'm really enjoying it.

This Spanish Love Songs album is pretty bleak but I'm into it

I don't think there's a rolling thread for indie, math-rock, etc, but this might do. I'm really loving this Covet tune.

"Scram!" sounds like a sneak peek of the next Glass Beach album jfc

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

after two listens I am ready to declare NO DREAM as considerably better than POST- but not quite as good as Worry which I don't think is toppable. also much more punk than I was expecting

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link

Yessss! Halfway through and this is precisely the release of pent-up energy needed. Agree with Simon that it's a lot punkier than the previous. I'm crazy about the album art too.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 18:32 (three years ago) link

I've listened to this 5-6 times already lol. it feels like it's five minutes long

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 18:35 (three years ago) link

My dopamine is through the roof right now haha

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 18:38 (three years ago) link

feeling extremely targeted by the lyrics of "Old Crap" in particular

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 21 May 2020 00:23 (three years ago) link

sounding pretty good even if it's not a worry-level masterpiece

ufo, Thursday, 21 May 2020 02:56 (three years ago) link

I assume Craig of the Creek (which I've not watched) is getting the benefit of his more showtuney/colorful side. I await his vastly improved take on American Idiot sometime after his TV watch ends.

NO TIME is full Basket Case

tangenttangent, Thursday, 21 May 2020 21:40 (three years ago) link

"State Line" has been my NO DREAM highlight so far. I still think We Cool? is his best

gman59, Thursday, 21 May 2020 22:31 (three years ago) link

and the title track which is pretty incredible

gman59, Friday, 22 May 2020 03:59 (three years ago) link

funny the title track is the mandatory "one song I find skippable" which seems to exist on every single Rosenstock release for me.

another new Creeper song, "All My Friends"....this rollout is taking forever but wow is this one a beaut

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 22 May 2020 11:21 (three years ago) link

also I think the new Caligula's Horse record (and the superior previous one) would appeal more to emo thread cru people than most of the metal thread. big soaring heart-on-yr-sleeve shit, pretty close to the better moments on the Dear Hunter albums.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 22 May 2020 11:29 (three years ago) link

mansions! one of my favorite bands! they're back! putting out a new album on my birthday (6/26). new song is incredible

holy post-punk "Everything In Its Right Place" batman

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 29 May 2020 17:22 (three years ago) link

is it just me or is modern metallic hardcore sneaking into emo records more lately? (I feel like it used to be only the reverse that happened, hardcore bands doing an emo song or two). I am not mad about this development

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Sunday, 31 May 2020 01:10 (three years ago) link

Seems we might not get that new Fireworks this year after all :(

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 June 2020 01:31 (three years ago) link

makes me think of Autolux kinda?

including, it must be noted, Charly Bliss covering "Pretend to be Nice" which I have not gotten to yet but surely it rules

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

let's just say it was def not recorded in a studio but it's still pretty cool

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

hearing Kay Hanley do "Radiation Vibe" is so cool

thats funny. i feel like caracara, closer and bartees strange are probably the 3 best things I ever discovered because of rolling emo

gman59, Monday, 1 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

I'm enjoying a couple of these tracks, though I am wondering if this might be a "small doses" kind of thing:

https://teenagewrist.bandcamp.com/album/earth-is-a-black-hole

This band definitely sounds like some big 2000s(ish) mainstream(ish) rock band that I do not know, but someone here will immediately.

alpine static, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:36 (three years ago) link

this was posted to the metal thread but I feel like it will have a good home here too
