so much of this music has that effect! have you tried the DJ Neptizzle Amapiano Mix that longneck posted on the “Emcimbini” thread?

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 20:32 (four years ago) link
That would be NaakMusiQ.
It’s an unfortunate choice of words though (not that you would have known), as the female singer on this, Nichume, committed suicide a year ago. I had heard about it, but didn’t realize it was her on this track until just now.
(to make matters worse, Mobi Dixon’s treatment of her -he was her label boss- apparently was a factor in this. damn, I wish I hadn’t known)

ugggggghhh. Thanks for the info tho.

so there's a "Mzansi House" playlist on Apple Music that seems to be all this sort of stuff. Is that just their name for the playlist or is that a recognized genre name?
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 21:32 (four years ago) link
"Mzansi" stands for South Africa.
― No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 21:35 (four years ago) link
to quote a Wikipedia quote:
"Mzansi is another black urban vernacular term popular with the youth and standing for South Africa."

thanks again! (I did do a brief google and only saw that it was an obsolete term for someone who yells)

The instrumental track and the singing do not really connect, I find.
― Nabozo, Saturday, 18 April 2020 12:18 (four years ago) link
it's perfectly pleasant but there's nothing to really elevate it to the level of his best work and a bit too understated even for him.
― ufo, Saturday, 18 April 2020 12:38 (four years ago) link
omfg this is exactly what we need right the fuck now.
It's going to take a lot to best an album as incredible and emotionally uplifting as Africa to the World. This track is lovely, and if the rest of the album is as good as this but not better I'll still be happy. He has a specific vibe that is just romantic and beautiful and does such an amazing job of giving me an "escape" and Uhuru still has that in spades.
― octobeard, Monday, 20 April 2020 00:51 (four years ago) link
i don't doubt the album will be really good even if this track is a little more understated than one might have expected from a 'first single' (not that 'understated' is necessarily a bad thing in sun-el's hands)
― dyl, Monday, 20 April 2020 16:46 (four years ago) link
yeah same on all points
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 02:37 (four years ago) link
I agree that it’s not as good as a “Sonini” or “Ntaba ezikude” (leaving “Akanamali” out of this, because hors catégorie), but I still think it’s gorgeous. What puts this song over the top for me is Azana’s vocal - so earnest and affecting. She seems to be new, she has no footprint (voicetrail?) on Spotify at all, but her Twitter tells me she has an album out in May; the snippets suggest a slightly more jazzy vibe than for instance Simmy. But maybe y’all wanted Simmy on this?

Sweet. What I find funny with this video, is that where we hear house music (and look for certain qualities) South Africans are hearing "their" music under all the lush tapestry, chimes etc.

Btw breastcrawl if you're still learning Zulu, Simmy gives her own translation of Ngihamba Nawe (or I Choose You) in the YT comments.

oh nice, will have a look! (I’m not actively studying, but I’m much more alert to song titles and stuff, so I do google-translate a lot)

cross-posting with the Moloko thread:“Sing It Back”, repurposed by Samthing Soweto as a gospel workout, lyrics slighly tweaked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxuqpXRNuUMSoweto Central Chorus of the Salvation Army ft. Samthing Soweto • Bring It BackMuch better to watch the performance itself, starting from 55:12:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJxmbsgD-FcDon’t know if this version predates the much more faithful (!) Sha Sha cover or not (it looks like it was recorded last year as well) - Samthing and Sha Sha are only one step removed from each other obviously.(Samthing is on two more (consecutive) songs earlier in the concert, “Bawo” and “Mzalwane”, from 11:28 onwards)
