happy to share my list (and plex connect!)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 15 March 2020 22:39 (four years ago) link

This might be the first year I vote in this; I saw way more movies last year than usual and a lot of them were great

Vinnie, Sunday, 15 March 2020 23:36 (four years ago) link

in my area? there's one multiplex within an hour of driving. i can't vote for parasite then.

Voted!

Pretty good year for film imo

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Sunday, 15 March 2020 23:44 (four years ago) link

Gonna have to sit this one out--I rely almost exclusively on streaming services these days, which means that about half of the 2019 movies I want to see won't be available to me within the next two weeks--but I encourage everyone to watch Giant Little Ones and Under the Silver Lake before voting.

Lol

xyzzzz__, Monday, 16 March 2020 19:25 (four years ago) link

you didn't like it?

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Monday, 16 March 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link

Liked it but it was a very cinema-specific experience.

Just laughing on how quickly you are changing opinion, and how you are binge-watching just to have a ballot. It's ok not to!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 16 March 2020 19:48 (four years ago) link

right now I'm binge-watching so I don't have to put The Souvenir on my ballot

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Monday, 16 March 2020 19:53 (four years ago) link

Please vote imago :) And yeah Monos is great

Frederik B, Monday, 16 March 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

Frederik B, Monday, 16 March 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Anyways, you should watch Atlantiques if you haven't already, imago. It's on Netflix. Everyone should make sure to watch it!

Frederik B, Monday, 16 March 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

Anyways!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 16 March 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

I guess that is my hype this year. I want to campaign for Heimat ist ein Raum auf Zeit but that one is probably not streamable...

Frederik B, Monday, 16 March 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

comalph and Fred are encouraged to share film opinions and campaign for votes itt, discouraged from sharing poster opinions and campaigning for bans itt

Portrait of a Lady on Fire, y'all

was gonna make the evening screening tonight but all cinemas have been closed statewide

have been watching Atlantiques on the elliptical but the YMCA is also locked down by order of the governor

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Monday, 16 March 2020 21:05 (four years ago) link

unbalanced year with 2 movies I'll cherish for the rest of my life (once upon a time & the image book), 2 fucking killer movie (uncut gems & the lighthouse), 2 compelling reactionary movies (joker & richard jewell) some more very good ones (beach bum, family, pain and glory, parasite, the farewell), and then tons of movies I admired but didn't respond to... little women, portrait of a lady on fire, midsommar (sort of)... and then a lot of just solid stuff like ad astra, knives out, booksmart, hustlers, honey boy, honeyland, detective pikachu...

I thought her smell, high life, the last black man in san francisco, bombshell, and us were the biggest disappointments. oh and the new assayas (like bad 2010s woody allen, in a way it filled a void)

the souvenir is the one I need to revisit before voting

thought I would hate the art of self-defense but it was good

flappy bird, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 05:55 (four years ago) link

Heimat was only just released in the US last week

Ash Is Purest White, The Wild Pear Tree, Birds of Passage, and An Elephant Sitting Still are the ones that most impressed me, although there were many others that I really liked. I'm planning on watching Long Day's Journey Into Night, The Image Book, Atlantics and The Lighthouse before voting.

local cinemas have temporarily closed so I won't get to see Portrait of a Lady on Fire

hoping to eventually see La Flor and Asako I & II

Dan S, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 06:19 (four years ago) link

new assayas (like bad 2010s woody allen, in a way it filled a void)

ha it wasn't as bad as modern Woody, but it was definitely "we trained a neural net by watching 500 French films about adult relationships and it wrote this script about adultery in the publishing industry"

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 07:00 (four years ago) link

Are Ash Is Purest White and An Elephant Sitting Still eligible? Thought they showed up last year. Would be in my top 3 if so

or something, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 09:31 (four years ago) link

If they showed in your area in 2019, or if you didn't vote for them last year but still want to, go for it. But yeah, they are 2018 movies in my book. Still, I won't complain if they show up on the list instead of, like, Ford v Ferrari :)

Frederik B, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 09:33 (four years ago) link

Looks like the GFT showed them both last winter/spring, tho for some reason I didnt make either and picked up dvds

or something, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 09:54 (four years ago) link

I think they both opened in the US in the spring of 2019

Dan S, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 16:11 (four years ago) link

I simplified the eligibility criteria too much: if something didn't screen theatrically in your area but was available to you (eg High Flying Bird had a festival screening, Dolemite Is My Name had a limited release, I Heard You Paint Houses had festival showings and single-chain unlimited release), it still counts. Basically if you think it has a chance of anyone else voting for it, it's eligible!

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 17:43 (four years ago) link

Flappy, why did last black man in sf disappoint you?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 19:20 (four years ago) link

previously unmentioned films i would STRONGLY recommend people watch prior to voting: Diane (hulu), Transit (amazon prime), Apollo 11 (hulu), For the Birds (netflix), Hail Satan? (hulu), Aquarela (Starz), Penguin Highway ($3 on Amazon to rent), Wild Pear Tree ($4 on vudu [lol] to rent), Olivia (2019 reissue of 1951 film, $3 on Amazon to rent)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 19:28 (four years ago) link

as always, the first criterion is a theatrical release in NYC

if I don't get my work apps downloaded soon I won't have time for this bcz i'll be going batshit/hungry/moving to CT.

Flappy, why did last black man in sf disappoint you?

― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, March 18, 2020 3:20 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

I thought it collapsed under the weight of its own ambition, and while it started off strong, it fell apart for me pretty quickly, just not following through on so much. and by the end it had completely lost me

flappy bird, Thursday, 19 March 2020 04:27 (four years ago) link

its story wasn't conventional and it didn't have a resolved plot, but I thought it was beautiful, quiet and surreal

Dan S, Thursday, 19 March 2020 04:38 (four years ago) link

it was maybe my favorite film of the year! i guess ymmv

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

I need to watch at least one more 2019 film I feel like giving a vote to to make a ballot but I feel like I should so i can be the other Alita voter alongside Brad.

Atlantics really is a beautiful film

Dan S, Saturday, 21 March 2020 05:26 (four years ago) link

I feel very behind still on '19, but am able to see Peterloo and Shadow, as well as rewatch Transit, before the vote.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 March 2020 06:03 (four years ago) link

but I encourage everyone to watch Giant Little Ones and Under the Silver Lake before voting.

― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Monday, March 16, 2020 11:08 AM (five days ago)

Giant Little Ones can be digitally rented from $1.99, is currently on Starz and DirectTV in the US, and can be watched free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy.

Under The Silver Lake can be digitally rented from $0.99, is included with a Bezos Prime subscription, and is free on Kanopy.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Saturday, 21 March 2020 07:00 (four years ago) link

Shadow was surprisingly great; probably the best purely visual film of the year

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:46 (four years ago) link

well, i'd never be surprised, coming from Zhang Yimou.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:55 (four years ago) link

yimou is consistently great but he sometimes misses the mark on story for me as of late. Shadow is a very fun historical action/romance and the fight scenes are outrageous.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:57 (four years ago) link

Still bummed his film on the cultural revolution was apparently banned :( should have come out in february

donald failson (sic), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:06 (four years ago) link

I just voted :) My lists are so weird every year. I don't know why it's so much harder for me to make a film list than an album list. Hoping to see my #1 on the list, though it's a longshot.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:09 (four years ago) link

(xpost) That's good--I actually almost said "There will be a quiz" in my post, and was also going to mention that I should get extra credit for handing in my assignment early.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:19 (four years ago) link

We had 32 voters for 2018, 28 last year, and 25 received so far this year. If the imagent household only files further ballots today, thta's pretty good attrition.

donald failson (sic), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:42 (four years ago) link

I was thinking of submitting a ballot, but went through the rym list and had only seen these films

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool
Toy Story 4
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Joker
Leaving Neverland
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

I fear my short ballot would only make the list worse, but will be following the rollout to get some recommendations of better things I should be watching.
