This might be the first year I vote in this; I saw way more movies last year than usual and a lot of them were great

Pretty good year for film imo

Gonna have to sit this one out--I rely almost exclusively on streaming services these days, which means that about half of the 2019 movies I want to see won't be available to me within the next two weeks--but I encourage everyone to watch Giant Little Ones and Under the Silver Lake before voting.

was gonna make the evening screening tonight but all cinemas have been closed statewide

have been watching Atlantiques on the elliptical but the YMCA is also locked down by order of the governor

unbalanced year with 2 movies I'll cherish for the rest of my life (once upon a time & the image book), 2 fucking killer movie (uncut gems & the lighthouse), 2 compelling reactionary movies (joker & richard jewell) some more very good ones (beach bum, family, pain and glory, parasite, the farewell), and then tons of movies I admired but didn't respond to... little women, portrait of a lady on fire, midsommar (sort of)... and then a lot of just solid stuff like ad astra, knives out, booksmart, hustlers, honey boy, honeyland, detective pikachu...

I thought her smell, high life, the last black man in san francisco, bombshell, and us were the biggest disappointments. oh and the new assayas (like bad 2010s woody allen, in a way it filled a void)

the souvenir is the one I need to revisit before voting

thought I would hate the art of self-defense but it was good

Heimat was only just released in the US last week

Ash Is Purest White, The Wild Pear Tree, Birds of Passage, and An Elephant Sitting Still are the ones that most impressed me, although there were many others that I really liked. I'm planning on watching Long Day's Journey Into Night, The Image Book, Atlantics and The Lighthouse before voting.

ha it wasn't as bad as modern Woody, but it was definitely "we trained a neural net by watching 500 French films about adult relationships and it wrote this script about adultery in the publishing industry"

If they showed in your area in 2019, or if you didn't vote for them last year but still want to, go for it. But yeah, they are 2018 movies in my book. Still, I won't complain if they show up on the list instead of, like, Ford v Ferrari :)

Looks like the GFT showed them both last winter/spring, tho for some reason I didnt make either and picked up dvds

I think they both opened in the US in the spring of 2019

I simplified the eligibility criteria too much: if something didn't screen theatrically in your area but was available to you (eg High Flying Bird had a festival screening, Dolemite Is My Name had a limited release, I Heard You Paint Houses had festival showings and single-chain unlimited release), it still counts. Basically if you think it has a chance of anyone else voting for it, it's eligible!

(hulu), Aquarela (Starz), Penguin Highway ($3 on Amazon to rent), Wild Pear Tree ($4 on vudu [lol] to rent), Olivia (2019 reissue of 1951 film, $3 on Amazon to rent)

I thought it collapsed under the weight of its own ambition, and while it started off strong, it fell apart for me pretty quickly, just not following through on so much. and by the end it had completely lost me

its story wasn't conventional and it didn't have a resolved plot, but I thought it was beautiful, quiet and surreal

it was maybe my favorite film of the year! i guess ymmv

I need to watch at least one more 2019 film I feel like giving a vote to to make a ballot but I feel like I should so i can be the other Alita voter alongside Brad.

Atlantics really is a beautiful film

I feel very behind still on '19, but am able to see Peterloo and Shadow, as well as rewatch Transit, before the vote.

Giant Little Ones can be digitally rented from $1.99, is currently on Starz and DirectTV in the US, and can be watched free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy.

Under The Silver Lake can be digitally rented from $0.99, is included with a Bezos Prime subscription, and is free on Kanopy.

Shadow was surprisingly great; probably the best purely visual film of the year

well, i'd never be surprised, coming from Zhang Yimou.

yimou is consistently great but he sometimes misses the mark on story for me as of late. Shadow is a very fun historical action/romance and the fight scenes are outrageous.

Still bummed his film on the cultural revolution was apparently banned :( should have come out in february

I just voted :) My lists are so weird every year. I don't know why it's so much harder for me to make a film list than an album list. Hoping to see my #1 on the list, though it's a longshot.

(xpost) That's good--I actually almost said "There will be a quiz" in my post, and was also going to mention that I should get extra credit for handing in my assignment early.

We had 32 voters for 2018, 28 last year, and 25 received so far this year. If the imagent household only files further ballots today, thta's pretty good attrition.
