1950's Best Movies: 70 Years Later

I appreciate Stromboli and the rest of the Ingrid-Rossellini Trilogy thanks to Criterion.

I'm tempted to vote for Los Olvidados .

haven't seen that one. Sunset Blvd is one of my favorite films ever

I like All About Eve just fine, but these other five are just a bit more my speed, I guess. I wasn't, er, crazy about Gun Crazy when I first saw it, but I probably owe it a rewatch (I remember the ending being really beautifully shot). I love Ford, but his two from this year aren't my faves. The most glaring omission from this list is definitely The Rabbit of Seville; if Un Chant d'Amour (which I like) is eligible, Bugs Bunny should be as well.

I have somehow still never seen The Asphalt Jungle.

it’s hard for me to pick a favorite Kurosawa film. Rashomon is great but I also really like Red Beard, Dersu Uzala, Seven Samurai, High and Low, Dreams

In a Lonely Place was interesting I thought, it expanded on his concept of an unconventional thriller in They Live by Night

my favorite Ray film is still Johnny Guitar

Hadn't seen the thread before. Yes it does need more discussion, the choice is impossible. Sunset Blvd. is almost the weakest on the list, which is crazy.

Stars in My Crown is top 3 Tourneur for me

Was the American film industry already nervous about television, or does that come later?

I know it's an old complaint now, but the last time I watched Sunset Blvd. the Nancy Olson scenes weren't just a letdown from the rest of the movie, they were downright boring.

Parallel: Martin Milner in Sweet Smell of Success. (The character, anyway--luckily he's a foil for some great stuff from Tony Curtis.)

My instinctive vote would be Kurosawa or Bunuel but All About Eve is perfect so

Rashomon is definitely one of the Kurosawas I'd actually consider giving a vote in these polls.

I couldn't tell whether she's a bad actress or Wilder directed her badly. It's possible no one could say those lines.

I mean, William Holden's dialogue takes a hit in those scenes too imo.

See 1935's Trapped by Television (or rather don't; those who know say all the creativity went into the title and poster).

many of these I haven’t seen, of those I have seen this seems like an amazing year.

still want to watch Gun Crazy, Night and the City, Los Olvidados, Un Chant D’Amour, Outrage, Stars in My Crown, Wagon Master, La Ronde

also the two Rossellini films

La Ronde and Night and the City both rock. You can catch the latter quite frequently TCM.

my guess is All About Eve will be the winner here
