I need to watch at least one more 2019 film I feel like giving a vote to to make a ballot but I feel like I should so i can be the other Alita voter alongside Brad.

Atlantics really is a beautiful film

Dan S, Saturday, 21 March 2020 05:26 (four years ago) link

I feel very behind still on '19, but am able to see Peterloo and Shadow, as well as rewatch Transit, before the vote.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 March 2020 06:03 (four years ago) link

but I encourage everyone to watch Giant Little Ones and Under the Silver Lake before voting.

― Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Monday, March 16, 2020 11:08 AM (five days ago)

Giant Little Ones can be digitally rented from $1.99, is currently on Starz and DirectTV in the US, and can be watched free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy.

Under The Silver Lake can be digitally rented from $0.99, is included with a Bezos Prime subscription, and is free on Kanopy.

Shadow was surprisingly great; probably the best purely visual film of the year

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:46 (four years ago) link

well, i'd never be surprised, coming from Zhang Yimou.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 21 March 2020 15:55 (four years ago) link

yimou is consistently great but he sometimes misses the mark on story for me as of late. Shadow is a very fun historical action/romance and the fight scenes are outrageous.

Still bummed his film on the cultural revolution was apparently banned :( should have come out in february

Just saw Mark Jenkin's Bait - https://player.bfi.org.uk/subscription/film/watch-bait-2018-online

Amazing. Low-budget Super 16 British kitchen-sink Godardian irrealism. Great Gwenno soundtrack. Full recommendation. Jenkin is a good 'un

^^easily top 10 on my ballot, a genuine original

or something, Saturday, 21 March 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link

Think I was misinformed about Gwenno doing the soundtrack - one of her songs is in it but Jenkin apparently did the music himself (on top of writing, directing and editing it). Maybe she helped

just watched Monos - 2019 much improved already

Monos can be rented digitally for $5.99, and is currently on Hulu in the US.

Just seen Bacurau too, and it's great...but does it count as 2019? I think it might be more of a 2020 thing. What do we think? I guess there are rules in the OP

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:02 (four years ago) link

it was supposed to open here in the US this month, but I'm not sure any theaters are even operating at this point

Dan S, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:07 (four years ago) link

Mubi is your friend! But I think maybe 2020 it is. RYM (lol) has it as 2019 but that's from limited screenings

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:18 (four years ago) link

It opened in NYC two weeks ago, and is being streamed over the new Kino Lorber platform. Only played US festivals (just NY?) in '19.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:20 (four years ago) link

does mubi rotate through just 30 different films a month with frequent expirations? I’ve been looking for a way to see Bait as well as Bacurau, but when I look at what’s showing there I don’t see either of them

Dan S, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:25 (four years ago) link

It had it's world premiere in 2019, it's absolutely a 2019 film. But did anyone here see it in 2019? How many has seen it yet? For strategic reasons, it's probably better to save it for next year?

Frederik B, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:28 (four years ago) link

Bacurau has only just gone up on Mubi. Bait requires a BFI subscription, which, having served its purpose, I may cancel, after ascertaining what else is available

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:30 (four years ago) link

check the 77 plex thread; both of them are viewable

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:55 (four years ago) link

yeah, Bacurau is just now getting the advertising that it would have had for a release, instead as a guinea pig for Kino Lorber pandemic streaming. if you saw it in France or Brazil last year, feel free to vote for it, but don't expect it to turn up on other peoples' ballots.

right now I'm binge-watching so I don't have to put The Souvenir on my ballot

the souvenir is the one I need to revisit before voting

Can be rented digitally for $1.99, is currently on Prime, and free on Kanopy.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Sunday, 22 March 2020 07:51 (four years ago) link

Just saw, and loved, bacurau too but yeah, didn't see it in 2019 and it didn't show anywhere near me in 2019 so I guess I should save that vote

or something, Sunday, 22 March 2020 18:42 (four years ago) link

Yeah there are only ever 30 films on there, every day they remove the one at the end of the list and add a new one at the top. The selling point is that it’s curated, so you don’t have the option paralysis of scrolling through an infinity of likely garbage

I loved bait

felt jute gyte delete later (wins), Sunday, 22 March 2020 18:51 (four years ago) link

I thought it collapsed under the weight of its own ambition, and while it started off strong, it fell apart for me pretty quickly, just not following through on so much. and by the end it had completely lost me

really liked The Image Book

Dan S, Monday, 23 March 2020 01:21 (four years ago) link

feels like a culmination/distillation of the themes and style he’s explored since Histoire(s) du Cinéma

and an order of magnitude greater, imo, than everything he did in between ('98-'14). everything in between is so disappointing and frustrating

xp - including Esther’s voiceover during the plane landing, the detailed interior examination of the engine of the car during the carpet crawlers sexual fantasy, the bull attack which was frightening, and the two youngest children narrating intimate aspects of the adults’ story

The Lighthouse is really something

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:18 (four years ago) link

should pale death with treble dread
make the ocean caves our bed
god who hear’st the surges roll
deign to save the suppliant soul

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:22 (four years ago) link

the fresnel lens is beautiful, as is the Cape Forchu setting

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:36 (four years ago) link

I imagine the claustrophobic feel works for home viewing, but the big screen / oppressive sound design of The Lighthouse made for one of the best theatrical experiences I had last year, even in a multiplex with no masking.

Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:59 (four years ago) link

wish I had seen it in a theater, the cinematography and the sound are incredible. the story is more abstract than The Witch but is equally mesmerizing

Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 02:14 (four years ago) link

the dance they did while drunk was incredible, and it went by so fast:

“Come, all you boys who wish to hear
How we got up to the woods last year
Into the sleigh we jacked our boots
Our teamster pointed to the big blue spruce”

and then the slow dance, the near kiss, the fight, and the confessions

shifting to ppl's lists from the other thread

knife + heart (if it counts)
