Atlantics really is a beautiful film

I feel very behind still on '19, but am able to see Peterloo and Shadow, as well as rewatch Transit, before the vote.

but I encourage everyone to watch Giant Little Ones and Under the Silver Lake before voting.

Giant Little Ones can be digitally rented from $1.99, is currently on Starz and DirectTV in the US, and can be watched free with a library card on Hoopla or Kanopy.

Under The Silver Lake can be digitally rented from $0.99, is included with a Bezos Prime subscription, and is free on Kanopy.

Shadow was surprisingly great; probably the best purely visual film of the year

well, i'd never be surprised, coming from Zhang Yimou.

yimou is consistently great but he sometimes misses the mark on story for me as of late. Shadow is a very fun historical action/romance and the fight scenes are outrageous.

Still bummed his film on the cultural revolution was apparently banned :( should have come out in february

Think I was misinformed about Gwenno doing the soundtrack - one of her songs is in it but Jenkin apparently did the music himself (on top of writing, directing and editing it). Maybe she helped

Just seen Bacurau too, and it's great...but does it count as 2019? I think it might be more of a 2020 thing. What do we think? I guess there are rules in the OP

It opened in NYC two weeks ago, and is being streamed over the new Kino Lorber platform. Only played US festivals (just NY?) in '19.

does mubi rotate through just 30 different films a month with frequent expirations? I’ve been looking for a way to see Bait as well as Bacurau, but when I look at what’s showing there I don’t see either of them

It had it's world premiere in 2019, it's absolutely a 2019 film. But did anyone here see it in 2019? How many has seen it yet? For strategic reasons, it's probably better to save it for next year?

Bacurau has only just gone up on Mubi. Bait requires a BFI subscription, which, having served its purpose, I may cancel, after ascertaining what else is available

yeah, Bacurau is just now getting the advertising that it would have had for a release, instead as a guinea pig for Kino Lorber pandemic streaming. if you saw it in France or Brazil last year, feel free to vote for it, but don't expect it to turn up on other peoples' ballots.

I thought it collapsed under the weight of its own ambition, and while it started off strong, it fell apart for me pretty quickly, just not following through on so much. and by the end it had completely lost me

The Lighthouse is really something

the fresnel lens is beautiful, as is the Cape Forchu setting

I imagine the claustrophobic feel works for home viewing, but the big screen / oppressive sound design of The Lighthouse made for one of the best theatrical experiences I had last year, even in a multiplex with no masking.

wish I had seen it in a theater, the cinematography and the sound are incredible. the story is more abstract than The Witch but is equally mesmerizing

the dance they did while drunk was incredible, and it went by so fast:

“Come, all you boys who wish to hear
