"And You Bird Can Sing"--fantastic, plus I'm not big on the other two. Think I saw Husker Du cover it once.

These are the three tracks which sound kind of like half-finished ideas, all John are they? hm.

This should have been a Minutemen or Angry Samoans or Minor Threat poll.

I'm going to have my ballot ready by April, I swear

The solo in "And Your Bird Can Sing" is a poem.

there's nothing extraordinary about Dr Robert but I dig it

the chiming guitar lines in the right channel that come in after the bridge, good song

I'm Only Sleeping if only for the backwards solo

Best thing about Dr. Robert is the middle eight

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:01 (four years ago) link

you’ll note that on the UK release, “doctor robert” is preceded by “for no one” which is preceded by “and your bird can sing” — two very ambitious songs with complex harmonic structures that nevertheless don’t quite “groove”

and then it’s followed by “i want to tell you” — all that dissonance and clanging and droning

so i say it works rather nicely as a palate cleanser if you will

budo jeru, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:06 (four years ago) link

sorry i missed this poll, "and your bird" is my fav beatles song most of the time

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:11 (four years ago) link

Missed voting. It would have been "I'm Only Sleeping".

Sund4r, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:18 (four years ago) link

I got my vote in for I’m Only Sleeping but you should repoll as 17 minutes wasn't enough time

Bee OK, Sunday, 22 March 2020 01:16 (four years ago) link

Haha, I would completely dig seeing more 17-minute polls.

Correct song won. Maybe appropriate that it's also the shortest song.

pplains, Sunday, 22 March 2020 01:19 (four years ago) link

lol, i would've done "i'm only sleeping" myself

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 22 March 2020 01:35 (four years ago) link

Interestingly I’m Only Sleeping came in at number 9, in the Best Fabs Tracks Ever poll we did in 2011. I recall it being a big surprise, i’d never really thought of it as anything special. I do now though!

IOS = one of their greatest verses

I'm Only Sleeping, easy

octobeard, Sunday, 22 March 2020 03:56 (four years ago) link

I'm Omly Sleeping is my favourite Beatles song. And Your Bird Can Sing would edge into the top ten. Dr Robert not so essential but still fine. What were they thinking missing these off the US release? Crazy.

yugi ex, Sunday, 22 March 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link

I'm Only Sleeping is absolutely central to the record imo, maybe my favourite on it! Madness.

chap, Sunday, 22 March 2020 18:55 (four years ago) link

Of course, they were left off the US Revolver because Capitol had already released them on the US Yesterday and Today patchwork LP, which came out a few months earlier. I loved all three songs back when I only knew them in that form. Then in the 80s, when the US version of Revolver was restored to the original UK tracklist, I liked how it brought Lennon's contribution more into balance with McCartney's, while also better showing the '66 Fabs as a badass psych rock outfit.

'And Your Bird Can Sing' is an irritant on most days, whereas 'I'm Only Sleeping' is one of their best songs. 'Dr Robert' is listenable enough.

"and your bird can sing" has been overwritten in my memory with the outtake from "anthology" that has stoned giggling in place of a proper vocal track

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 22 March 2020 19:22 (four years ago) link

^ immediately cued this up, the laughter is contagious !

this poll's timing was the equivalent of those state assemblies staying back late in the last hours of their Republican majorities to shove legislation through
