Havin' a good time with Doom 64 at the moment. I really dig the level design in this game

fwiw/ymmv, from the guy that leaked the mini direct:
That said, I'm not trying to get your expectations sky high. I don't think this year is going to match 2017, and Nintendo is going to continue relying on HD remasters -- but maybe in a bigger way that ever before

I've not played Odyssey yet, but presumably some of people's problems with it is that the natural comparison is the Mario Galaxy games, which are some of the best?
gyac - if you dig Ace Attorney and IF you also dig picross, Murder by Numbers is pretty excellent.

My friend plays that AF! So I’ll look it up!
― extremely Dutch coughing sound (gyac), Saturday, 28 March 2020 00:39 (four years ago) link
odyssey is more like 64 than like the galaxies, its got big worlds rather than lots of smaller courses. also why it's better imo
― ciderpress, Saturday, 28 March 2020 01:32 (four years ago) link
a lot of people prefer mario as obstacle course to mario as playground though
― ciderpress, Saturday, 28 March 2020 01:37 (four years ago) link
i prefer the obstacle course, it's true
― Karl Malone, Saturday, 28 March 2020 01:39 (four years ago) link
(luckily odyssey gets to be both since there's lots of obstacle course sub-levels within the levels!)
― ciderpress, Saturday, 28 March 2020 01:39 (four years ago) link
i really like playground mario! but i worship the ground of obstacle mario.
not sure i've heard that distinction before, but i like it!
having said that i did not like the level w the purple stuff everywhere

this one is a pain in the ass. the city level was my favorite mostly b/c the size difference between mario and the human people never stopped being funny.

The 2d section in the city level is top 20 gaming moment for me

Nintendo is going to continue relying on HD remasters
Tbh I would rather have a wind waker HD port than anything else right now

Mario Odyssey seems good for a while then it occurs to you that it is ultimately trash and you play through it to complete it but hell no you aren't 100%ing that shit, Mario vs Rabbids or whatever it's called was awesome but if you like that sort of thing surely Steamworld Heist is cheaper. Mario Maker is fucken vital tho.Breath Of The Wild is a beautiful masterpiece and anyone who says otherwise I will stab in the face.Hollow Knight also beautiful, I did have a certain boy do some of the boss fights for me cus I'm severely dyspraxic, which is why I didn't get too far in Celeste, as much as I loved it

Mario Odyssey seems good for a while then it occurs to you that it is ultimately trashah okay, i haven’t unlocked the challops kingdom
― karmic blowback for dissing pip and jane baker (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 28 March 2020 12:38 (four years ago) link
i didn't like steamworld heist because the missions are procedurally generated so they're kinda samey and there's no sense of good encounter design
― ciderpress, Saturday, 28 March 2020 13:09 (four years ago) link
also mario and rabbids goes on deep sale all the time anyway
― ciderpress, Saturday, 28 March 2020 13:12 (four years ago) link
Difficulty levels aside, Cuphead, Hollow Knight and Ori are how you do Switch ports right. They're absolutely gorgeous and, by many accounts, are better optimized for this system than any others. If all games looked and played this good, I would buy all games. Thank goodness, then, that few games are this good. Personally tired of all the pixel-y games, though, however good, which is why I only finished Shovel Knight and didn't play its sequels, or why (aside from difficulty) I didn't really return to Celeste, great as both of those games objectively are.
fwiw my kids, who played a bit of Odyssey but have been watching me play Dark Souls 3, have warned me that Odyssey will seem really easy after that. Probably!

I want to play Dark Souls 3 so badly but only own Nintendo products. I also want to replay certain Wii titles that I wish were ported to Switch-- Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, for example; Resident Evil 4, also

Picked up Rabbids on sale for 15 bucks. Thought I might not like it at all, but I'm currently really enjoying it. Definitely worth the $15.
Dating a new girl who introduced me to Unravel Two, which was great fun. We just reached all the bonus levels. Platforming feels good and clean, though there are moments of jank. Play provided a ton of laughs, and skill gaps between players are remedied with the ability to pull each other up to platforms if one person succeeds and the other gets tired of trying. We tried some of the hardest bonus levels and couldn't get near solving them. I think we'll continue to put time into them.

i played about 5 hours into rabbids, but was started to get a little bored, like that i was still on the tutorial, almost. and the power-ups / skill progression seemed really railroaded.
i'm not looking for it to be a super advanced tactics sim or anything, but does it ever open up a bit or get more complex?
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 March 2020 21:29 (four years ago) link
like that i was still on the tutorial, almost.
by this i don't mean that it was super easy (although it wasn't hard), more that it felt like i was still being introduced to major concepts of the game that far in
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 March 2020 21:30 (four years ago) link
It does eventually at least start requiring making right decisions rather than wrong ones to win missions.
