Michael Rosen, in ICU yesterday but on a ward now and "ok, stable and alert" according to Twitter

Yeah shit about Rosen, hopefully on the mend but can’t imagine ICU is where anyone wants to be right now. Or any time I guess.

The Labour councillor, Pat Midgley, has become the first UK politician known to have died from coronavirus, three days after testing positive for Covid-19.

Midgley, 82, who served on Sheffield city council for 33 years, was described by her family as a “true woman of steel”.

Ah crap, Andrew Jack died from it. Really loved him in the documentaries for Jackson's LOTR films, he was the on-site dialect coach, and a great presence. Also was in some of the new Star Wars films.

There was a short interview with Chris Cuomo on CNN a few minutes ago. He's going to keep doing his show for the time being. He was quite eloquent on what he's going through. The two worst things, he said, were 1) worrying that he may have infected his wife or kids, and 2) unlike most medical issues, doctors not being able to tell him what comes next (he's at an early stage, still mild symptoms). I find his case especially unsettling because if he tested yesterday, that means he almost certainly contracted it in the past two weeks. He's been on CNN for the past three weeks urging people, nightly, to take all precautions and follow social distancing. Either he wasn't following his own counsel, or doing virtually everything you're supposed to may not always be enough.

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 01:05 (four years ago) link

I feel that it's very likely the latter. There are just way too many variables for the layperson to juggle (without enough clear and consistent information from the fucking top), and the seeming ease of transmission wrt this particular virus is taking advantage of our amateur juggling.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 01:32 (four years ago) link

The latter would be my guess - short of having stocked up on dried/frozen goods months ago, it's all but impossible to completely avoid anyone else/the possibility of contaminated surfaces. Following recommendations is just reducing your risk as much as humanly possible.
