Working from home the last week or so have been listening lots to In Order To Dance 6, Platinum Breakz and those Logical Progression/Earth comps so looking forward to checking out recommendations in this thread

Oh shit I still have that In Order To Dance 6 cd! Played the shit out of that one. That's got Locusts 'No-One in The World' jam w/ the Carpenters sample right?

Yeah. It's a great compilation

^That is a ridiculously good vinyl haul up thread. Swing Time/The Wedge by Hidden Agenda is one of my all time favourite 12s. I also have the Kaotic Chemistry LSD EP on CD single.

cracking haul.
not jealous at all.
not that i would know what to look for to be honest.
as i don't do the vinyl thing i have to cope with the fact that yesterday i randomly found a rather fantastic d-n-b remix of 'intergalatic' by the beastie boys (by "prisoners of technology") on a freebie cd that i had in the attic.
been up there for 20 years, and had never heard it before.

I've been caning Routes From The Jungle on walks for last couple of months. It remains one of the best compilations of any kind. Disc 1 in particular is entirely dud free.

Open Your Mind (Remix) is like a whole rave in one track and I think Bludclot Artattack (Dark Mix) might be my all time favourite jungle tune. That and Dark Stranger perfectly representing '93 darkside. Actually what Bodysnatch is worth checking because Secret Summer Fantasy is also a high point among high points.

Solid Gold: how the beat science on Photek's 'Modus Operandi' redefined drum & bass

Great new piece about Photek's magnum opus (and a good reminder to spin it once again).

Seba doing a live set on Bassdrive in about 90 minutes. I'm not sure I've heard Seba as a DJ?

Missed the whole thing because I can't figure out Twitter (lol old), but Prototypes did a 24 hour streaming set to benefit the NHS ending yesterday at 7:00 GDT. Sponsored by DnB Arena and looks like it's still up on YouTube in pieces: https://youtu.be/AuWEjF89u5E

Is there a version of DnB that sounds distinctly like 2020 and not retro?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:12 (three years ago) link

I'm not sure if you mean less emphasis on the jungle breaks? Most new stuff coming out now is less jungley. That nCamargo record would be a good place to start, or try a comp like Sick Music 2020 on Hospital, or Select Files #5 on CIA. Or tune into Bassdrive or Jungletrain, their DJs get a lot of promos and are usually playing really new records.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:31 (three years ago) link

I don't know that I have something specific in mind, just something modern and fresh

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:36 (three years ago) link

It's still taking inspiration from classic soul, but with drum machines taking over for the JBs cut up breaks, it does sound more 21st century than, say, "Drumz '95."

https://youtu.be/Sz984mRjc9c
^ Inja, "Sanctuary" from that Sick Music 2020 comp

https://youtu.be/PKp90HJzllk
^ MI-KH, "Dreamscape" Command Strange remix

https://youtu.be/MUcon425BbM
^ L-Side, "The Void"

All tunes from 2020, not sure how fresh they'll sound to you but I think they're a good overview of much of the genre currently.

Revolutionary Girl Utrenja (Tom Violence), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:46 (three years ago) link

I like that this Sick Music comp is a bit more melodic rather than just straight up tech darkness

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 19 April 2020 00:53 (three years ago) link

Lenzman's full length from last year, Bobby, would probably be up your alley. More atmospheric than straight up melodic, but kinda jazzy and smooth. For actual melody, either Etherwood or Riya, although their albums were both a few years ago.

"Higher Love" by Hybrid Minds feat Charlotte Haining is great too, that's from last year:

Speaking of old sounding stuff, today is the 21st anniversary of Kemistry's passing, and Storm put a great set of the two of them at the Blue Note NYC in '98 on her Soundcloud and Mixcloud pages.

DBridge new album dropped today - Inhibited. Not really drum'n'bass per se but where else on this board does it go? Absolutely pitch black in tone and sounding great on first listen

I wish I had said this morning but I believe Beatport is donating a portion of purchases to the NAACP today only. I bought the Redefining the Spectrum comp (42 tracks for $17), the last two AwakeFM EPs, the Robot Skank EP by LJ High, and 7 Tunes In 7 Days EP by Hugh Hardie, which honestly should have had its own post but I'm behind the ball lately.

I've been really enjoying D&B again this year, especially the kind of sparse rolling side of things.

Heres a mix I did a couple of months back in that vein, 99% of it was released this year:

Foul Play release was already linked up thread. It’s great!

Also good shout on AwakeFM. Check out Approach and Identify on Omni Music, a clear nod to 96 era Amen break Source Direct but actually bringing something fresh to the table

I don’t know where else to put this but RIP to the very talented Josh Clark of the famed DC dnb duos Sinthetix/Rob F & Impulse and later Corrupt Souls, among many other projects.

These guys were on fire in the early 2000s and I believe were notably one of the first U.S. acts to be embraced and released by the techstep/neurofunk titans across the pond (No-U-Turn, etc.). They even got a look from John Peel on his Fabric Live mix! Always warmed my heart to think of 60+ year-old Peel loving their track Liar.

A bit of an IYKYK but they really made some killer sounds, worth exploring their discog.
