Gave a courtesy vote to Bob Brookmeyer. I bought a few 20th c 'classical' LPs on Discogs that came from his collection. He was teaching in my state at the end of his life.

wow is ray anderson really your favorite trombonist ? what’s a good place to start in his catalogue ?

budo jeru, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:46 (four years ago) link

The trombone is an instrument of power imo, and bop/post-bop often sells it short. My favorite trombonists are either from New Orleans (Corey Henry, Stafford Agee, etc), Willie Colon, or like North Carolina shout choir musicians whose names I don't know.

Tough choice between George Lewis ("Homage to Charles Parker" is one of my alltime favorite pieces of music) and Jeb Bishop (imo he buried a bunch of very heavy hitters at the Brotzmann Tentet +2 show I saw in SF).

can I just recommend any trombone fans to check out Don Drummond? I usually don't fuck with ska but he is amazing.

Fuller is without a doubt the secret weapon in the Blue Note arsenal.

ray anderson on braxton's performance(quartet)1978 or seven compositions 1978, or any of the bass drum bone stuff.

cool, thanks

Julian Priester is someone I know nowt about but he played on Duke Ellington's New Orleans Suite. I dearly dearly love that album.

calzino, Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:08 (four years ago) link

Try Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi albums - Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant - to hear Priester. He's also got a great early '70s album of his own, Love, Love, on ECM.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 2 April 2020 22:40 (four years ago) link

^ yes.

phil who gets yr vote ?

I like Wycliffe Gordon because of his sense of humor, he can play anything but sometimes it's just animal noises.

There's a trombonist named John Allred who used to play in Harry Connick Jr's band, he's great, just always in total control. The two of the made a record that's pretty fun for trombone heads:

Ok I'd forgotten how stunning the band is on 'Evolution'

xp because this is a poll about jazz trombone i didn’t make room for the art music / avant-garde / academic types like stuart dempster or michael dessen

budo jeru, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:06 (four years ago) link

although it’s true that there are hundreds of amazingly talented trombonists and these polls can only accommodate 50 options

budo jeru, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:08 (four years ago) link

also Jordan yeah the “evolution” band rips
