I should rewatch, but I think I would place the Loznitsa top three along with Boonmee and Certified Copy.

only seen boonmee and outrage. the former is a better film by leagues... but i do prefer the thought of the latter winning

devvvine, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:31 (four years ago) link

oh and certified copy

devvvine, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:31 (four years ago) link

I really liked Loznitsa’s My Joy and Lee’s Poetry

Dan S, Sunday, 5 April 2020 00:48 (four years ago) link

Kiarostami.

Vegemite Is My Grrl (Eric H.), Sunday, 5 April 2020 01:01 (four years ago) link

yeah of the six or seven I've seen K-dawg is the winner

I will have to watch Certified Copy again. I wasn’t convinced by it the first two times, but still am open

Dan S, Sunday, 5 April 2020 01:08 (four years ago) link

I didn't like it at the time either, but the cineastes have nearly succeeded in browbeating me into giving it another chance.

huh?

Dan S, Sunday, 5 April 2020 02:30 (four years ago) link

Not watching it a second time 'til I've seen Another Year and Poetry once.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Sunday, 5 April 2020 03:07 (four years ago) link

you piece of shit

Simon, that's not the funny joke you thought it was.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 5 April 2020 03:11 (four years ago) link

sorry Dan I was trying to jokingly do a bit where I was bro hardmanning you into more perceptively rewatching a beloved abbas kiarostami film but I suspect the intended effect was lost between brain and post

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Sunday, 5 April 2020 03:31 (four years ago) link

:) I will definitely watch it again, with intention!

Dan S, Sunday, 5 April 2020 07:21 (four years ago) link

I remember liking Beauvois’ Of Gods and Men, but it feels long ago, would also like to see it again

Dan S, Sunday, 5 April 2020 07:39 (four years ago) link

The Housemaid isn't really that good, btw, but I couldn't help but think of it when I saw Parasite. Class warfare in a luxury mansion, except with Im Sang-soo it's mostly kitsch.

(it's a remake of a classic Korean film from the early sixties by Kim Ki-young, who himself remade it twice. Both remakes are on the Korean Film Archive youtube, if anyone is interested)

Route Irish? This Ken Loach film feels like it has been inserted into history. Don't have any recollection of it at all.

I remember seeing A Screaming Man and really liking it. Will have to see it again

Dan S, Monday, 6 April 2020 02:17 (four years ago) link

want to watch The Tour

Dan S, Monday, 6 April 2020 02:26 (four years ago) link

or On Tour

I liked Burnt By the Sun, not sure I care about a sequel

Dan S, Monday, 6 April 2020 02:38 (four years ago) link

Finally watched Another Year this morning and promptly voted for it in this poll (liked it better than Uncle Boonmee and waaay better than Certified Copy. Seeing takes out there suggesting that Gerri and Tom are actually assholes for constantly shoving their perfect lives in the faces of their fucked up friends, which is hilarious.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

don’t understand the mania for Certified Copy, Uncle Boonmee still gets my vote

Dan S, Saturday, 18 April 2020 00:05 (four years ago) link

I don't get it at all. It's an interesting failure, imo. I don't like Boonmee much past the first episode, but that episode is truly great.

Syndromes and a Century is an all-time great film for me, fwiw. I love Joe. Voted for the Beauvois.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Saturday, 18 April 2020 02:02 (four years ago) link

I haven't seen Poetry but there's a good chance that I'd love it.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Saturday, 18 April 2020 02:07 (four years ago) link

saw Secret Sunshine and Poetry before Burning, thought they were both great
