the left had their chance, and the people have spoken - they want a tory, but not an electable one

this is how political compromise works
Remember when Labour really needed the left of the party between 1997 and 2015?

too tired to dunk on British columnists and leader writers who, even in the midst of a pandemic and seeing a country where Tory policies will kill hundreds of thousands, still think the actual problem are young leftists who saw their struggles represented in Corbyns labour— hk (@HKesvani) April 4, 2020

I won't be as classless as Jess Phillips was on election night, because Tories doing well isn't anything to celebrate. I will just be rather apathetic and probably won't even stay up and definitely won't be arsed about voting.
― calzino, Saturday, 4 April 2020 10:22 (four years ago) link
Unsurprising really, the RLB campaign was very quiet in the end, it never really seemed to take off at all and Starmer didn't have to do anything except sit there. I'd be surprised if most of the country even notices right now.TBH the paltry share of the vote that Nandy recieved is heartening. The response that Butler got is gutting and says a lot.In reality it's what Starmer does from here on in that matters. He'll have to do a fuck of a lot better than he's done so far.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 4 April 2020 10:23 (four years ago) link
Probably the worst part is going to be the crowing from the people who have been banging on about the need to unite the party for years. You don't unite anything by gleefully shitting on the last guy.

gutted by the Butler results, though Rayner is all right imo (I expect to hear why she isn't soon)
as ilx's resident melt I wanted to believe Starmer was Not That Bad for a lot longer than anyone else here, but he's been completely invisible during this whole crisis and tbh I'm dreading whenever he does finally pop up in case it's to say something motivating like "don't let's be beastly to the landlords"
― a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 4 April 2020 10:34 (four years ago) link

Under Starmer, I think the left need to: 1. Stay in the Party, exercise power constructively & creatively where we can. 2. #keepitfrosty - there’s very little to be gained by wrecking & obsessing over the leadership. If it goes badly, they can own it, if it goes well, great.— Tom Gann (@Tom_Gann) April 4, 2020
