what's the new deadline?

fauci wally (voodoo chili), Sunday, 5 April 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

would love to re-check ladyland before submitting my final

fauci wally (voodoo chili), Sunday, 5 April 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

Right now the deadline is...sometime next week? I've 15 ballots, not including mine (because I haven't even started drawing it up yet). Definitely want more, but I know everything is scary & weird right now. This is the first poll run totally during the pandemic so...you have time.

I'll send out more confirmations as I start counting ballots again. Took a break so my own ballot wouldn't be overly influenced by inside knowledge.

Was just listening to the Burbank loss leader album, which for a long time was the only way to get the original 45 mix of "The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice" on an album. I wanted to share it, but...NOT ON YOUTUBE (and the version on South Saturn Delta is a cleaned-up remix).

Has everyone checked out http://www.rockprophecy.com/ before? I've been checking it every couple years for 20 years ever since I saw an ad for it in the back of a Village Voice. It's a grand conspiracy about how Hendrix was an alien prophet come to warn humans about an asteroid that is going to wipe out the Earth and love (and a spaceship?) will somehow save us. The guy used to work for Hendrix rights holder putting together releases before he was fired when the Hendrix Estate reacquired the rights in the late 1990s, so he mixes in the whole thing with a weird, paranoid hatred of Paul Allen (who funded the Experience Hendrix Museum) and has a very strong whiff of disgruntled employee. The final cherry on top is he plays in a Hendrix cover band and uses a left-hand Strat upside down or whatever like Hendrix. This is fun stuff.

imi Hendrix sang, wrote, and spoke about his remote view of Rock. Government sponsored scientific studies prove that the ability to remote view is an inborn trait in some people. Jimi named what he saw Electric Love - the asteroid aimed to impact our planet. At 10 pm (London Time) on Friday the 13th in April of the year 2029 Common Era (Year 86 Uncommon Era) asteroid 2004 MN4 will arrive.
In July "2005" NASA re-named asteroid 2004 MN4 as the "Apophis" (the Greek word for "Evil Destruction"). NASA'a official number for Apophis is "999-42" - which is 666-6 ("4+2"=6) - sign of the devil - upside down and backwards.

I cannot believe I used to listen to Joanna Newsom

I hear it now and I'm at a high school play wishing that one kid would dial it down about a hundred notches

i kind of want to vote for like 2 or 3 tracks but maybe that doesn't justify a ballot

I've got 17 ballots in (not including mine). I'll keep it open into next weekend at the very least.

The hardest thing about this is that my favorite Hendrix song is whatever one is currently playing.

Why, I would make a fantastic Nero! (PBKR), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 12:25 (four years ago) link

yeah I feel that.

I’ve been trying to choose between “jams” and “songs,” and a lot of the simplest/least interesting songs are the ones with the most mind-bending solos. Gotta trust my inner 13-year-old on this one lol

fauci wally (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 13:08 (four years ago) link

I never really get tired of "Purple Haze" and "Watchtower" tbh. Former has one of my favourite solos by anyone.

Sund4r, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

I hope we have the poll counting technology to accurately sum "Power to Love" and "Power of Soul" votes. Parts of that song make the Band of Gypsys sound like a christian group that tours elementary school gymnasia, delivering a positive message for the children. but the switch flipped at 20 seconds (on Band of Gypsys) is probably the most thrilling guitar moment for me on any album by anyone. one of my favorite riff, solo, groove jimi songs.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 15:54 (four years ago) link

the other type of song is the jimi plays the same chord progression over and over in subtly beautiful ways: castles, little wing, bold as love, angel, hey joe, ...

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 16:11 (four years ago) link

he barely did it live, didn't he? woodstock and the first band of gypsys show and that medley with "machine gun" on the tonight show and... that's about it, isn't it?

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 16:15 (four years ago) link

yeah, i guess there are fewer than for other, older songs. but they all rip in different ways.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 16:23 (four years ago) link

first gypsys show might be the best? I was scared away from that fillmore comp because I don't like the Power of Soul that opens it. what a mistake.

Interesting. PH is the only one of his singles where I wonder why he didn't take a mulligan on the solo. To my ears, it lacks his customary fluidity.

When we post our ballots and I reveal that I voted for a non-Hendrix composition as my #1, I fully expect to be banned for life.

that's why it stands out, imo.

watchtower is prob still my favorite solo of his. unless it's the little wing intro. or something else, it's a true embarrassment of riches in his catalog.

fauci wally (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 17:53 (four years ago) link

nothin wrong with "Hey Joe" or "Watchtower" at #1

billstevejim, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 17:59 (four years ago) link

i've never understood the adoration for watchtower. i hate how the studio track is mixed. and i swear that snare sounds way out of time with the rest of the tracks sometimes. i think i still voted for it, but i'd think that Gypsy Eyes would be a better candidate for "hit" off that album.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:07 (four years ago) link

(xpost) I won't be getting off the hook that easy.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:08 (four years ago) link

i left "she's so fine" and "changes" off bc it felt wrong, but they are great.

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link

When I first heard All Along the Watchtower I definitely remember thinking it sounded different from many of the others. It's possible there was an expectation for it to chart as a Top 40 pop radio hit which accounts for the acoustic guitar and the extra boost of reverb and delay and compression. I didn't like it at first (I was 10) but I quickly grew to enjoy it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 18:56 (four years ago) link

It is comforting to me that, as the most basic Jimi fan there is--I only submitted a 10-track ballot, most of which can be found on any of the Hits packages--my #1 track has still not been mentioned in this thread.

the hell with "tax free" though, that goddamn lord of the rings record is bullshit

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link

I was having such trouble I finally just cut my ballot at 20 and was going to submit it this morning, but work got in they way. Now I am reading about Power of Soul upthread and regretting I left it off.

Hendrix may be a top-5 artist for me primarily off the three Experience studio albums and this, which I got new for my 19th birthday. The 1969 disk is my favorite live Hendrix show - absolutely smoking Hey Joe, Spanish Castle Magic (with Sunshine of Your Love instrumental), and the best Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Plus my favorite live stage banter of all time: Fan: [Yells song requests.] Hendrix: Yeah, we'll get to all that. When I ask for toilet paper, THAT's when you come rolling out.

Having said that, listening to the new Band of Gypsys and has been a revelation. I love how straight forward and taut the whole thing is and there are so many great performances.

Like that 13 minute Stone Free that leads off the last set on Songs for Groovy Children is fucking awesome. The last few minutes are ragged glory.

spanish castle magic is heavy in a cool way. but it feels in family with manic depression, and i prefer the lyrics and vocals on manic. fuck traveling by dragonfly.

i suppose we all must confront and accept the frequent...grooviness of jimi's lyrics

Time constraints will prevent me from participating, but please allow me to say that "Stone Free" is all-time great.

I love Jimi's lyrics and his singing. To me he has the best unorthodox timing in rock other than possibly Dylan. Dragonflies are cool, man.
