i love baseball but i have yet to love a baseball video game. SMB2 is pretty good. i'm not crazy about the art style and i haven't found the right difficulty level to make it challenging but fun yet, but the gameplay is solid.

I don't give a shit about baseball but really liked that weird 3DS game with the dog that sells you cartridges for your Nontendo 4DS, but you could haggle with him to make them cheaper? now that I write this out it sounds more like a fever dream. anyway there was one in particular that was a baseball umpire simulator that I got obsessed with.

got slay the spire in the UK sale

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Sunday, 12 April 2020 20:39 (four years ago) link

I bought the Witcher 3. I played twenty minutes of it. It’s gory and um grimdark. Does it lighten up or did I spend $59 to be in a grumpy mood for eight million hours?

rb (soda), Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:06 (four years ago) link

it alternates between zany and grim and gritty but it's best to take everything from the word go with an industrial salt lick

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:08 (four years ago) link

yeah the whole concept of the witcher is fantasy noir. its got a very deadpan humor to a lot of it though

ciderpress, Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:19 (four years ago) link

How essential is the audio? Can I put on some Dead Can Dance?

rb (soda), Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:43 (four years ago) link

lol yeah fantasy noir is basically goth right

the multiplayer train game is a big hit, playing with the 5 year old. Going to try unravel 2 next.

What is the multiplayer train game

El Tomboto, Sunday, 19 April 2020 03:48 (three years ago) link

Conduct Together! It was on sale last week. I think it might be a free phone game as well.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 19 April 2020 04:31 (three years ago) link

It is great because you have to communicate, and then somebody will always make a mistake. After which we get to hear stuff like "sorry, that was my fault" or "it's ok", which is a small miracle out of that little dude.

a good substitute for the euchre i grew up with

Got around to Yoku's Island Express. Fun! Nice mash-up of Metroidvania + pinball video game adventure from the Worms people, so it's adorable. Strong Donkey Kong Country / Rayman vibes.

Nhex, Sunday, 19 April 2020 22:52 (three years ago) link

So Aviary Attorney (SPOILERS) is this fun lighthearted Ace Attorney knockoff in 19c Paris. You collect evidence, cross-examine witnesses, and as a touching sideplot you and your opposing attorney (the prosecutor) gain grudging respect for each other. At least, it was lighthearted until I found myself defending my friend the prosecutor deep in the catacombs ... but for the first time I didn't have the right evidence ... the game just mercilessly chunked through its mechanics, forcing me to select, with mounting horror, a wrong piece of evidence, then another, then another ... until the "judge" got impatient and shot my friend the prosecutor and he died.

I put it down right after, but I don't think this is an inevitable shift in tone in the game, I think I just messed up collecting evidence and the consequences were traumatizing.

me and the SO have been playing Overcooked 2, it's the first Overcooked experience for both of us.

i've done a lot of competitive gaming in my time, and I have never been as stressed out as when I'm playing this fucking game.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Tuesday, 28 April 2020 17:27 (three years ago) link

It's really no different than Overcooked 1. You get more bonuses the more you execute dishes in the correct order. Kicking items across the screen is your friend. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Indivisible looks intriguing, might pick it up if there's ever a good sale...has anyone played it?

cwkiii, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 12:36 (three years ago) link

i've heard pretty mixed things about it, also the switch port was apparently done by the publisher without the devs knowledge and is an older build of the game without some features they patched in like co-op and new game+

ciderpress, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 13:02 (three years ago) link

i preordered the physical version back in November. hopefully it comes out someday

Cross=posting from the AOC thread:

Hi there! Very new to this.

I would like to visit random people’s islands and leave a doodle or note on their bulletin board.

Can I do that? If so, how?

Should I open my DMs for the first time since the Zuckerberg hearing for the Dodo codes?? https://t.co/pQlm0ES1cM

four weeks pass...

just finished up unwravel 2 with my 5 year old, which was great. because of the sale, we've moved on to kirby. kirby is perhaps the greatest play-along-with-a-5-year-old game ever made. got dragon quest (also in the summer sale) and plan to follow tim rogers' recommended bedtime dragon quest routine.

Finish, or 100%

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 17:58 (three years ago) link

Because I "finish" lots of games, which is to say, I make it to the end of the story. But there's a ton of stuff I haven't done in Zelda, Hollow Knight, and so on.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 18:00 (three years ago) link

finish = you have asked the grinning bobcat why he grins. Until then you haven't truly "finished" anything.

I wish I was hyped. I did, however, as a glutton for punishment, buy Dead Cells on sale for Switch today. People seem to love that one.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

Dead Cells is awesome, you're going to love it

i'm trying to remember, have you played a roguelike before? you've played dark souls, which is similar in some ways (start over at a certain point when you die; die over and over again in general). but roguelikes add some randomization in there as well. with dead cells, you'll start each run with a different set of equipment, for example

our god is a wee lil god (Karl Malone), Friday, 12 June 2020 19:12 (three years ago) link

you can also sing it to the tune of Red Sails

voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 June 2020 19:51 (three years ago) link

I played a few kind of remedial rogue likes, like some game called Goner, iirc. But not, like, Enter the Gungeon or The Binding of Isaac, the latter mostly because it looked so gross and unpleasant. But Dead Cells I've heard described as a rogue-like that gets everything right that a lot of them get wrong. With an additional element of Metroidvania to it.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 19:57 (three years ago) link

it's SO HARD

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 12 June 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

Binding of Isaac has a gross theme to it but it's cartoony enough that it's pretty easy to get over / get used to. I still maintain that it's the most rewarding roguelike ever made.

Evan, Friday, 12 June 2020 20:57 (three years ago) link

I just can't get with a game whose central conceit seems to be a child locked in a basement by their abusive parent who must fight evil poop monsters or whatever.
