Pretty pissed at how many Bisons there are on Spotify. I'm positive my band was the first.

L.A. punk legends X shocked fans by dabbling in meandering dorm room EDM

How the fuck did I get three of these in one week?

billstevejim, Thursday, 16 April 2020 15:39 (four years ago) link

the boring non-punk X is back on today's Release Radar, but I guess we have to let X = X

the latest entries in the reappropriated name sweepstakes are the wrong Peter Green (fair enough), the wrong Baroness (whatever), and the wrong Talk Talk (really?)

I'm sure name duplication often happens with no ill intention, but "Talk Talk" is an especially egregious example of gaming the system

I’m listening to the fake talk talk as we speak

Only tangentially related but there was a time a million years ago when I was in college and got super excited when I saw flyers for a Helium show up all over campus but then like the day before the show the flyers all suddenly read 'Helium Oxygen' and that was a bummer.

Saint Etienne a couple of weeks ago, Can collaborating with Turkish rapper Metin Ben today.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 16 April 2021 19:02 (three years ago) link

ehm... “can” is the Turkish word for “soul”, and is also a very common name (given name as well as surname) - very much doubt they were going for the Holger Czukay vote here.

also:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_(band)

Band name:
The band used the names "Inner Space" and "The Can" before finally settling on "CAN". Liebezeit later suggested the back-formation acronym "Communism, Anarchism, Nihilism" for the band's name, after an English music magazine claimed this was the intended meaning.[10] But Mooney had originally suggested the name due to its positive meanings in various languages.[11] For example, in Turkish, a language much heard in Germany, "can" may mean, depending on the context, "life, soul, heart, spirit, beloved and vitality".[12]

PS: “Ege Bamyası” is Turkish as well

Ahh, wasn’t aware of that. Everyday is a school day etc

Dan Worsley, Friday, 16 April 2021 19:45 (three years ago) link

all good!

bonus lesson:

Can (Turkish: [dʒan]): Turkish and Azerbaijani use is derived from the Persian word Jan (Persian: جان). In Turkish, the name Can is pronounced like the common English name John.

Do bands do this with song titles too? I've had the idea kicking around for years to write an album where every song shares a title with one of the most streamed songs of the moment, just to see how many plays I could get out of it. By now someone must have done it.
