This is an amazing blitz match between Carlsen and Firouzja

I love playing unrated players - never know until you do if they’re pros or schlubs

lag∞n, Sunday, 19 April 2020 18:53 (three years ago) link

Anyone following the Magnus Carlsen Invitational? Its the final between Magnus and Hikaru in half an hour.

https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tournaments/magnus-carlsen-invitational-2020-final-4/2/1/1

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 13:32 (three years ago) link

he got blood from a stone with that win there

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 14:55 (three years ago) link

Yeah. He's a genius at endgames.

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:01 (three years ago) link

yeah magnus signature is prob winning seemingly drawn games, kinda lame signature! no offense

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

there's a video where he takes bartholomew's end games you must know test and he says he never explicitly studied them and claims endgame is sorta a weakness for him iirc but then dominates the test either by knowing all the endgames or more bc he's able to somehow calculate a bunch of them on the fly and comes up with some solutions that aren't the given ones by the bartholomew program it's a cool thing to watch tbh

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

yeah i watched that its pretty nuts bartholomews all do you know the blhdy blah formulation and magnus is all no whats that and bartholomew starts to explain it and magnus is like yeah thats just obvious

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

btw i hate this thread title what do u guys think about changing it to "ilx chess club"

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:16 (three years ago) link

i don't mind either way what the thread is called.

i should work more on my endgames. the cool thing about being great at endgames is that a) at my level i've noticed a lot of ppl aren't great at them so it'll give me a huge leg up and b) a critical strategy when going up a piece or a few pawns is knowing how to crush the endgame with that advantage but if you don't really know it v well it's too easy to still make stupid blunders even in totally winnable end games.

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:23 (three years ago) link

I don't mind the thread title, and recognize it as a nod to the Yes thread, but I'm not married to it.

Another endgame in Game 2 but it looks like Hikaru has a chance...

cajunsunday, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

blood from a stone 2: revenge

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

What’s the problem with the thread title?

calstars, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:18 (three years ago) link

Don’t be changing thread titles just for UX purposes

silby, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:41 (three years ago) link

Frankly embarrassing that lagoon would suggest changing a 15 year old thread title

silby, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:42 (three years ago) link

carlsen takes it up a level again

imago, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:42 (three years ago) link

Lagoon doesn’t like the word “hot” or the band yes, which one could it be

calstars, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:44 (three years ago) link

we have another chess thread iirc we could use that one instead

Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

Getting back into chess after a break of about 20 years has been one of the few positives from the current situation for me

Anyone on chess.com up for a game?

paolo, Monday, 8 June 2020 06:34 (three years ago) link

enjoying following pogchamps

||||||||, Tuesday, 9 June 2020 12:15 (three years ago) link

I asked Hikaru a couple weeks back if he was worried about the edge his tournament opponents can gain by analyzing all his streamed chess content. He said that he maintains a completely separate set of openings for stream so that OTB opponents can't do that. Wild and impressive.

I'm team hikaru, if we're picking sides in the ongoing chess eltism 'drama'. finegold is an annoying bast imo

I like john bartholomew's beginners videos

||||||||, Wednesday, 10 June 2020 13:21 (three years ago) link

whats the ongoing chess elitism drama

lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 June 2020 17:34 (three years ago) link

storm in a teacup. just finegold grousing about hikaru's pogchamps tourney and how it's sad scrub streamers are getting more views for their chess than GMs

||||||||, Wednesday, 10 June 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

Man why would you not rather watch scrubs, more educational for most surely.

think i leveled up (KNOCK ON WOOD) my rating is up 50+pts for the last week, feels a lil more stable/prolonged than just being on a heater, i somehow just started playing/seeing more dynamic positions, which is interesting cause it seems to come with more variance in winning/losing games with wider margins, also seems like players at my level arent necessarily comfortable playing those types of positions, im seeing people time out and make blunders

lag∞n, Sunday, 14 June 2020 16:22 (three years ago) link

I’ve been off chess since the vid started but I’ve been off twitter for 36 whole hours so maybe I can get back to it
