I appreciate People for sounding like a Mclusky tribute.

with "frail state of mind" i just love that they finally took the sound of their mostly-instrumental electronic pieces like "how to draw/petrichor" and "i like it when you sleep..." and made an actual song from it, it's so gorgeous sounding

ufo, Monday, 27 April 2020 08:15 (four years ago) link

i was always a 'frail state of mind' supporter, but now with all the singles released so far it seems to me it's not the strongest one, but still amazing.
i would rank the new singles like this

if you're too shy
me & you
jesus christ
birthday party
frail state of mind
people

phoebe bridgers having been a fan of them in high school is kinda confusing me because she's a year older than me and they did not have any music out when i was in high school. my first impression of them a few years after high school was they were like a tryhard landfill indie band in the vein of two door cinema club or something which couldn't have been more wrong in the end lol

ufo, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 00:54 (three years ago) link

That was how I saw them too hah

brief internet detective work suggests bridgers would've been 18 when the early eps started coming out

i only heard the stevie nicks and steve reich podcasts matty did but both are really great.
quite surprised that reich highlights 'jesus christ...' of all songs.

I was listening to "Calling All Stations" by INXS for the first time and the intro is a dead ringer for a first album style 1975 song

this thread is way too long...

i would have been seeing The 1975 for the first time tonight here in Southern California. i guess i won't be having "Sex" tonight after all.

"brief internet detective work suggests bridgers would've been 18 when the early eps started coming out" yeah but I think the majority of people don't turn 18 until their senior year or after.

Am I being too hopeful if I still believe I'll see them in October?

Looks like they got really lucky recently:

https://www.esquire.com/uk/culture/a32360709/coronavirus-music-industry/

Artists who’ve cancelled or rescheduled tours will also be trying to save money. When a band books a run of dates, they commit to their production costs up-front. If it doesn’t go ahead, they’re still liable. The 1975, who were due to hit the road in the US this spring, sidestepped a multi million-pound bill for their North America tour by cancelling before they had booked transport and backline support. “If we were to cancel the tour on, say, the third date, those costs would have remained even though the income had disappeared,” says manager Jamie Oborne. “It would have bankrupted the band.”

Also you should all read that piece anyway.

very curious whether the singles were chosen to encompass the breadth of the album. i hope not! i want the album the surprise me the same way each new single has.

all the reviews seem to say its their most eclectic yet

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 05:47 (three years ago) link

so far "i think there's something you should know" is really cool and the sequencing is messier than i could have imagined

ufo, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 06:28 (three years ago) link

"nothing revealed/everything denied" is a chance the rapper track

jesus "roadkill" is phenomenal

Really curious about 21. "Don't Worry" (written by: Tim Healy)

aphoristical, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 07:03 (three years ago) link

i'm a little underwhelmed, there are a lot of really great moments on this, but most of them are on the singles, and it's such a mess. ilwys got away with its length by being sequenced perfectly while this is ridiculously all over the place. some of the electronic tracks in particular feel underdeveloped - they sound gorgeous as always but don't end up doing enough with what's there. there's definitely a very good album of a more normal length here at least

ufo, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 07:32 (three years ago) link

the filler seems pretty clear so far

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 09:05 (three years ago) link

I'm sort of shocked at how little I'm connecting with so much of this :/
