Cross=posting from the AOC thread:

Hi there! Very new to this.

I would like to visit random people’s islands and leave a doodle or note on their bulletin board.

Can I do that? If so, how?

Should I open my DMs for the first time since the Zuckerberg hearing for the Dodo codes?? https://t.co/pQlm0ES1cM

four weeks pass...

just finished up unwravel 2 with my 5 year old, which was great. because of the sale, we've moved on to kirby. kirby is perhaps the greatest play-along-with-a-5-year-old game ever made. got dragon quest (also in the summer sale) and plan to follow tim rogers' recommended bedtime dragon quest routine.

it's a good routine! I did it for like two months before i burnt out.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 12 June 2020 16:56 (three years ago) link

i did too, getting approximately 11.4% through the game in the process

depends on the game surely

Finish, or 100%

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 17:58 (three years ago) link

Because I "finish" lots of games, which is to say, I make it to the end of the story. But there's a ton of stuff I haven't done in Zelda, Hollow Knight, and so on.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 18:00 (three years ago) link

finish = you have asked the grinning bobcat why he grins. Until then you haven't truly "finished" anything.

I wish I was hyped. I did, however, as a glutton for punishment, buy Dead Cells on sale for Switch today. People seem to love that one.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

Dead Cells is awesome, you're going to love it

i'm trying to remember, have you played a roguelike before? you've played dark souls, which is similar in some ways (start over at a certain point when you die; die over and over again in general). but roguelikes add some randomization in there as well. with dead cells, you'll start each run with a different set of equipment, for example

our god is a wee lil god (Karl Malone), Friday, 12 June 2020 19:12 (three years ago) link

you can also sing it to the tune of Red Sails

voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 June 2020 19:51 (three years ago) link

I played a few kind of remedial rogue likes, like some game called Goner, iirc. But not, like, Enter the Gungeon or The Binding of Isaac, the latter mostly because it looked so gross and unpleasant. But Dead Cells I've heard described as a rogue-like that gets everything right that a lot of them get wrong. With an additional element of Metroidvania to it.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 19:57 (three years ago) link

it's SO HARD

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 12 June 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

Binding of Isaac has a gross theme to it but it's cartoony enough that it's pretty easy to get over / get used to. I still maintain that it's the most rewarding roguelike ever made.

Evan, Friday, 12 June 2020 20:57 (three years ago) link

I just can't get with a game whose central conceit seems to be a child locked in a basement by their abusive parent who must fight evil poop monsters or whatever.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 June 2020 21:06 (three years ago) link

it's pretty tongue-in-cheek. but there are many other great roguelites you can try with other themes, like Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, Crypt of the Necrodancer...

Nhex, Friday, 12 June 2020 21:13 (three years ago) link

and dead cells!

our god is a wee lil god (Karl Malone), Friday, 12 June 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

spelunky and rogue legacy also rule though (haven't played crypt yet)

our god is a wee lil god (Karl Malone), Friday, 12 June 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

FTL still classic if you haven't played yet. Last year's Void Bastards was highly rated (by me) and is a pseudo-roguelike fps (more like Rogue Legacy in that progress carries over between runs).

Mordy, Friday, 12 June 2020 21:42 (three years ago) link

Which kirby is that Sufjan Grafton? My Switch arrived yesterday and I've got a six-year-old jonesing to play

stet, Friday, 12 June 2020 22:07 (three years ago) link

Kirby Star Allies. Digital is on sale rn for $42 in the US. It's perfect because you can play as kirby and move things along while your kid can join in or leave at any time as one of your allies.

voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 June 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

i think the major complaint people have is that it's too easy, so it is perfect for young kids. it is easy but fun.

voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 12 June 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

all kirby games are super easy and then have harder postgame challenge modes

ciderpress, Friday, 12 June 2020 22:36 (three years ago) link

stet, I'd also recommend unwravel 2 if you haven't played it already. It has melancholy indie vibes, but the overall message is very positive. It's a fairly easy platformer where your kid can usually ride on your back through harder parts.

This sounds perfect, thanks!

Yeah I decided to buy one when lockdown started - I set up alerts on a stock checking site and only just managed to get one this week. It was up on Amazon for about 30 minutes. Craziness.

stet, Saturday, 13 June 2020 00:24 (three years ago) link

OK, played a bit of "Dead Cells." It's fun, but is the point just to see how far/long you can go? There's a lot it throws at you from the start, too. How important is it to figure out what everything does?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 19:49 (three years ago) link

you can complete a run

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 20:02 (three years ago) link

and not important to figure out what everything does, because you'll figure that out naturally through dying and trying again and running across new items that you'll be forced to use

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 20:04 (three years ago) link

By complete a run, you mean ... just get past each level, right? But when you die, you go all the way back to the beginning, no matter what stage you're on? That's how it seems so far. Is the stopwatch timing it just there for entertainment purposes?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 20:18 (three years ago) link

No there is an actual end. (I haven't ever gotten there myself, but I haven't put in the time.)

OK, I'm getting into the rhythm of Dead Cells. It helps that it's different enough each time around that it's not totally annoying/boring. The music is great, too.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 18:15 (three years ago) link

Conduct Together! is $0.01 again. It's a fun local multiplayer game with kids.

voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 18 June 2020 03:54 (three years ago) link

89p in the UK but I'm not churlish enough to object to that.

JimD, Thursday, 18 June 2020 11:34 (three years ago) link

"Dead Cells" seems to be about going as far as you can go and getting as many upgrades and stuff as you can get before dying and getting sent back to the start again, which makes it sot of "Suicide Run: The Game." But I did seem to pass some sort of threshold today where it got a hair easier, or I got stronger ... right before some boss just kicked my ass because I apparently was armed with less than effective weapons.
