will have a listen!

got the Ka, it's intense. only half an hour long, doesn't waste a syllable

imago, Saturday, 2 May 2020 21:57 (one year ago) link

new Ka is more of him doing his thing, maybe even a shade more chill than normal. nothing wrong with that as no one on earth sounds like him

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 4 May 2020 13:21 (one year ago) link

new cash kidd tape is strong

devvvine, Sunday, 10 May 2020 11:47 (one year ago) link

echoing the love for the ka, probably my favorite of his to date

sleight return (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:10 (one year ago) link

the style ka utter is highbrow gutter

sleight return (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:11 (one year ago) link

I really like it. I wasn't familiar with his stuff at all prior to Descendants of Cain.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 22:14 (one year ago) link

two weeks pass...

Another year, another stellar Freddie Gibbs collab, this time with The Alchemist.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 20:43 (one year ago) link

yea love freddie but dont like him as much over al's beats

johnny crunch, Saturday, 30 May 2020 21:46 (one year ago) link

Yeah I'm overselling it a bit. Still, it's good stuff.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 21:49 (one year ago) link

Armand Hammer's Paraffin was pretty damn good but Shrines is next level.

pomenitul, Monday, 22 June 2020 18:58 (one year ago) link

tbh, i couldn't stand paraffin. but shrines was much closer in spirit to billy woods' great albums from last year, definitely more my speed.

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Monday, 22 June 2020 19:34 (one year ago) link

Agree that it didn't hold a candle to Hiding Places or even Terror Management but it was still solid in my book. I should revisit it in light of Shrines.

pomenitul, Monday, 22 June 2020 19:42 (one year ago) link

Billy Woods is one of me overall most listened to artists lately

Iron Wigs: Vic Spencer, Verbal Kent and a UK artist Sonnyjim

sounds great, thanks UMS

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 01:16 (eleven months ago) link

Has Vince Ash ever been talked about on a goon thread? I fucking love this, real 3-6, classic Cash Money vibes, so goooooooood

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 25 June 2020 19:34 (eleven months ago) link

also for the backpackers the Koreatown Oddity album is fantastic, classic Stones Throw vibes, really love his whole persona and rhyming

Los & Nutty ft. Babyface Ray - "On Fire"

Rio Da Young OG & Louis Ray - "Movie"

Bfb Da Packman ft. Sada Baby - "Free Joe Exotic"

Oh, and another one from Los & Nutty ("I'm Jus Fuckin' Around" ft. WB Cash)

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 June 2020 18:26 (eleven months ago) link

"movie" is crazy ... rio is dropping like 3 videos per week right now it's incredible

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 June 2020 18:56 (eleven months ago) link

it's impossible to keep up. i think my fav rio track is still this one from last year

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 June 2020 22:26 (eleven months ago) link

'just fuckin around' is a great song as is 'movie' imo

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 26 June 2020 23:45 (eleven months ago) link

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah we paid

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 19:10 (eleven months ago) link

No idea where else to put this, but the new Killah Priest album Rocket to Nebula is a beatless, ethereal and spiritual cloud rap victory. With a ridiculous album cover to boot! Seriously, this is great.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 9 July 2020 13:54 (eleven months ago) link

oh awesome didn't know about that

I don't get Pop Smoke

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:01 (eleven months ago) link

pop smoke is cool, i wasn't blown away with any of the projects he dropped when he was alive, but i've grown to really appreciate the hits. his stuff had a bounce and it was fun to rap along. his main artistic mode was '50 cent if he smoked 500 cigarettes before each verse,' but it would've been cool to see him grow.

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:18 (eleven months ago) link

that all sounds about right to me; his hits still resonate for me. I should listen to the new album.

i've been spending a ton of time in my local cemetery; it's about 350 acres of open land and one of the only places to be calm and alone in nature in brooklyn right now. Pop Smoke was buried under his government name out there in February in an unassuming and hard to find space and there is ALWAYS a group of two to five kids keeping vigil by his entombment.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:53 (eleven months ago) link

PS to Matt, thanks for Koreatown Oddity; that guy is great

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:53 (eleven months ago) link

maybe I'll try again, I haven't really found any of the newer generation of NYC post drill/trap/whatever rappers that interesting

Love Koreatown Oddity, I'm a sucker for those West Coast weirdo vibes

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 July 2020 19:04 (eleven months ago) link

don't try with the new album, imo. it's a&r'd to death.

nyc drill isn't my bag either, tbh, but sheff g and sleepy hallow are doing interesting things. idk who said, but i saw someone on twitter describe sheff g as sounding like 'if scarface were british' lol

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 9 July 2020 19:14 (eleven months ago) link

the only thing I really heard of Pop was the new album, aside from a couple things on YouTube prior, does he have a definitive mixtape?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 July 2020 19:39 (eleven months ago) link

his first mixtape is entirely produced by 808 melo and it has his two most famous songs, i'd check that out. only 9 tracks.

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 9 July 2020 19:58 (eleven months ago) link

sheff g & sleepy hallow "molly" is one of the best rap singles of the year

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 July 2020 21:44 (eleven months ago) link

its a very not-drill song (at least in the ny drill sense...) but yah thats great

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 10 July 2020 22:33 (eleven months ago) link

this beat's crazy

flopson, Sunday, 19 July 2020 22:15 (eleven months ago) link

Duke deuce - bad news

flopson, Monday, 20 July 2020 17:46 (eleven months ago) link

Spottie, Monday, 20 July 2020 19:42 (eleven months ago) link

apparently valee dropped an ep earlier this month. i've missed him.

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Monday, 20 July 2020 21:10 (eleven months ago) link

dee watkins' chosen one tape is a couple months old by now, but im a fan. he's got that north florida bite in his voice, and a touch of the youngboy/yungeen ace melodic sensibility. good stuff

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 22:59 (eleven months ago) link

I haven't been keeping up with rap the way I should this year but I'm enjoying the new Sada Baby.

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 24 July 2020 19:32 (ten months ago) link

Haven't properly kept up either, but I like the new MIKE, Weight of the World.

pomenitul, Friday, 24 July 2020 19:38 (ten months ago) link

So-called jazz rap is almost never jazzy enough for my ears in that it tends to minimize the improv part of the equation but what I've heard so far of this Boldy James / Sterling Toles collab gives the lie to that assumption. Not worth more than a 7.7 according to p4k tho.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 23:27 (ten months ago) link

love the baby smoove album. also love this new song, which isn't on the album but has an uneasy, syrup-fried charm

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Thursday, 30 July 2020 00:05 (ten months ago) link

remake of 'freaky gurl' by mulatto (unfortunate name), featuring gucci's best verse in a long time

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Thursday, 30 July 2020 21:59 (ten months ago) link

brian brown from nashville giving me some soulful isaiah rashad vibes

there's also a nashville rap-n-b guy named johnny pe, who, to keep the TDE thing going, reminds me a bit of sir

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Monday, 3 August 2020 22:18 (ten months ago) link

jetsonmade probably has the best 808 sound in the rap game right now. collaboration with rod wave is surprising, but works very well.
