Peacock’s reboot of Battlestar Galactica has found its world builder. Michael Lesslie, who was the lead writer and showrunner of AMC’s spy drama The Little Drummer Girl and penned scripts for Macbeth and Assassin’s Creed, will create, write and executive produce the series.

The new Battlestar Galactica comes from Mr Robot and Homecoming exec producer Sam Esmail, who struck a big overall deal with NBCU’s Universal Content Productions last year. It is produced by Esmail Corp and UCP, with Esmail and Chad Hamilton also exec producing.

Literally the only hint about what this will be is:

Lesslie will work up a reimagined world.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Homecoming had some interesting ideas around memory and culpability. Maybe this could be good? It continues to be sad that nothing gets made without some IP tie-in.

i quit homecoming after three episodes.

four months pass...

They are reshowing this on bbc2 starting in about half an hour. Which saves me having to dig out the DVDs.

cool. that first season rocked bells at the time and haven't watched this nonsense for ages and however ridic it got it was always daft but fun.

calzino, Saturday, 5 September 2020 21:08 (three years ago) link

the whole lot is available on i-player for a year, lol who needs torrents!

calzino, Saturday, 5 September 2020 21:11 (three years ago) link

I have something in common with calzino.

I had Katee Sackhoff due a Cameo for me and some friends in-character as Starbuck, that was a highlight of last year.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 September 2020 21:24 (three years ago) link

Katee Sackhoff's brilliant turn as Starbuck would be too complex a female character for Nolan, not because she's even that complex or deeply written, just that she's quite a rich creation next to his practically insentient female characters!

calzino, Saturday, 5 September 2020 21:32 (three years ago) link

if I were 20 years younger, she/her character would have been my teenage role model

sarahell, Sunday, 6 September 2020 00:23 (three years ago) link

I like the way some eps make you you take the side of a hard-right military warfare state over some prevaricating centrist bullshit-talking presidential figure!

calzino, Sunday, 6 September 2020 23:58 (three years ago) link

I was fairly anti-Adama for most seasons!

Don't forget that the leftist figure is a crook and finds new ways to be a bad guy each season until he gets executed

I powercycled through this show just before my daughter was born, and thought the way it reflected the psyche of post-9/11 America was fascinating, and that the show's action and plot twists were very compelling. But when I think of it now, mostly I think about how bad I thought the "All along the watchtower" scenes were, and how unsatisfying I found the resolution of Starbuck's final plotline. I could definitely stand to watch it again, though.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:02 (three years ago) link

I'm glad I watched this in the mid-2000s, but also I wouldn't want to bother watching it now even if I hadn't seen it. iyswim.

Did this show start or just massively add to the trope of someone having a gun to the bad guy's head and the bad guy saying "go on then! Just do it! Just shoot me already!"? (And then bad guy doesn't get shot).

kinder, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:24 (three years ago) link

That one's as old as the hills. Just started watching this as it wasn't the type of thing I'd bother with when it came out. Seen the 2 eps of the mini series so far and it's... ok so far. Endearingly low budget looking

or something, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:37 (three years ago) link

The second season and first four or five parts of the third are the high points. The fourth is mostly pure nonsense aside from one or two storylines. Things fell apart when they dug too heavily into the mystical aspects of the plot.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 10:24 (three years ago) link

Definitely. The twists at the start of the second series, iirc, are particularly powerful.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 11:20 (three years ago) link

Great cliffhanger at the end of season 2 also.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 11:46 (three years ago) link

We only saw it the once, and aside from what they did with Starbuck (one of the best characters in nu-golden age TV) I recall liking most stuff about it, or at least didn't find the mythology stuff terribly ... terrible. As I remember it, though, I want to say the most impressive feat was tossing in something like episode 2 of the first season. You've barely been introduced to these people in the pilot and then they throw this super intense, super-cool more or less bottle episode at you and you're hooked for several seasons. Show is finally streamable again on Peacock, maybe I'll convince a kid or two to watch ...

"I'm not a cylon" = "I'M NOT A CAWP!!!"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:24 (three years ago) link

Checking wikipedia I see it is the beginning of S03, partic Occupation, that was my favourite.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:34 (three years ago) link

Yeah mine too. They end that storyline too soon, they could've easily extended it to fill the whole season.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

did the show age well?

I remember loving it the first time I watched it. Desperation on every page.

The only other thing I remember is thinking Boomer's portrayal was absolutely atrocious, but maybe I was too emotionally calcified at the time to connect to the softness of the character.

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

I think I posted about this years ago, but this is the transcript of a roundtable that Moore and several actors did while the show was still going - https://en.battlestarwikiclone.org/wiki/Podcast:The_Battlestar_Roundtable

About halfway through Jamie Bamber has some very thoughtful criticisms of the direction of the show and the evolution of the Cylons.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 16:58 (three years ago) link

I think mid-season 3, it starts getting pretty bad and just gets worse. I loved the miniseries and first 2 seasons but have zero desire to revisit, knowing where it ends up

the bbc2 schedule (2 episodes every friday) seems achingly slow given all this talk. 50 odd episodes to get through, that's 1/2 a year at this rate.

(i have them all on dvd, but dvd player is currently flashing up 'BLOCKED')

The one positive thing about the last couple seasons is thinking how much worse it could have been if they'd picked a more loathsome song ... like substitute a popular song that you cannot stand in place of Watchtower (for me it was "In the Air Tonight" by Phil collins) ... as hokey as that plot was, it would have been so much more painful with Phil Collins.

The choice of ultimate boomer rock makes it worse.
