When I see those way-higher-than-maximum-sold prices, I tend to think: hmm, there's someone who took a punt a long time ago, when the sales hadn't yet got going, who hasn't been back to check/review since. I review and discount all unsold stock after six months, which allows me to take an occasional punt with an optimistic price, then steadily nudge it down until it finds its right level.

I came across a weird dub techno 12" that seems to be 'worth' about $125 bucks. The highest sold price is $183. There is a seller in the US who has a copy for $140. I could have listed mine at 120, the suggested price, less than the suggested price (below Median value), or I could price my copy that I have no desire to sell for $165, making that other copy in the US look good at $140. Once it sells for $140, then my copy for $165 is the cheapest you can get with $4 shipping. Otherwise you're paying more than that for shipping + 3-4 week wait time for the record to arrive. I don't need to sell this record, but if history has taught me anything, it's that there are dudes in Norway and Japan with a shit load of money and they're willing to buy some dumb shit with their money.

I felt weird selling an OG pressing of Tom Perry’s wildflowers three figures recently. It’s a shitty pressing. Maybe it tracks better on their mega bucks system idk. Feels like i should have just destroyed it.

Yeah I saw somebody on Craigslist posting that Petty LP for $400 or so and I was like “lol another Craigslist crazy”, then looked up the going rate for it and cringed

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:21 (three years ago) link

Has it not been reissued/repressed?

Pinche Cumbion Bien Loco (stevie), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:40 (three years ago) link

Petty's entire catalog (with and without the Heartbreakers) was reissued on vinyl in two giant boxes in 2014-2015, but only as boxes, I don't think you could buy individual LPs.

This is a whole nother ball o wax, but there’s something weird with the rights to Wildflowers and his estate. OG copies of Wildflowers have sold for ~$1000 on eBay. The recent box set has cooled prices on Wildflowers a little bit (I had trouble selling a Kevin Gray 2009 pressing for what I thought it deserved) esp because the cut is highly praised... but shitty Russian bootlegs are selling for ~$150. I expect it to become widely available at some point & the whole price structure will collapse.

I've been having a bit of a weird experience as a Discogs buyer: I ordered a couple of CDs from a guy in Colorado on May 8, and today the USPS tracking info showed that my package had been delivered to an address in Pittsburgh (I live in New Hampshire). when I asked the seller if he could look into the situation, he said he'd mixed up two other orders for that date and that he's hoping mine isn't another one. in his next message he said he'd contacted a buyer from Pittsburgh, who told him that they haven't received their package either. I'm not sure if he addressed the packages wrong or assigned the wrong tracking numbers, but either way I don't understand why one package was reported as delivered. the seller said he could either give me a refund or attempt to reclaim the package for me. I figure I'll wait and see if I receive anything by the end of the week (even if it's someone else's package), and if not I'll opt for the refund. I don't have any reason to believe he's been dishonest with me, but he must have bungled things pretty badly that day if three or more buyers are involved in the mix-up.

stop trying to make fetch the bolt cutters happen (unregistered), Thursday, 21 May 2020 02:16 (three years ago) link

It can happen.

I had two led Zeppelin albums sold, and managed to mix the addresses posting them both to two different countries. Funny thing was, both recipients denied receiving anything! (I only ever had one package go missing before)

After that fiasco, gave up on selling via eBay.

About a year later, found discogs was a good place to sell, and never looked back!

Etiquette Q: how passive-aggressive would it come off to tell a seller that while I personally don’t care or need a refund or intend to leave bad feedback, they REALLY should rethink their packaging and grading before someone pickier than me comes at them?

Are you asking what the baseline is because certainly the sky's the limit otherwise.

Evan, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 18:48 (three years ago) link

Worst discogs experience so far has been receiving a pricey record shipped in christmas wrapping paper. That’s it. No cardboard, no bubble, one layer of paper like it kist came from under the tree. Left negative feedback and the seller flipped out.

Cow_Art, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:04 (three years ago) link

noooo waaaay come on

Evan, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

If I have negative feedback for a seller, my first action is to email them and tell them what went wrong from my perspective. This is 99% of the time about accurate grading, 1% about packaging deficiencies. I always state the issue and make a suggestion for how to rectify the situation. In some cases, like when I'm buying a 3rd variation of It's A Sin on 12" that the seller said was VG+ but didn't mention the DJ stickers, writing on label etc, and the price variance for VG and VG+ is just a couple bucks, i'll just let it slide. If it's an expensive record though, i'll let them know. Usually they are willing to work with me to resolve the situation. Just be fair, don't be a dick when you email the first time, and be flexible on a solution.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

Shit, according to Discogs, i've made 223 purchases. I don't think i've left more than 5 negative reviews.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 20:11 (three years ago) link

True story. And the "package" was bent to shit and some of the wrapping paper had ripped off. The seller had only one rating before me so it looked like they were legit, they had a high rating. But it was only from one person. When I left them negative feedback their rating went down to 50%.

I don't think I contacted them beforehand, I was pretty angry. Otherwise I'm very civil and it almost always works out.

I've gotten stuff- mostly from ebay sellers- boxed in flimsy cardboard, repurposed priority mail boxes, once one came in 2 flattened cereal boxes. Weirdest was a big 18x12x16 box with the record bubble-wrapped inside with nothing else- just bounced around that big open box.

Guy paid memoir a record, I realize the PayPal shipping address and the Discogs shipping address don't match, I queried him about this in the 'Order' page, 2 days pass, I send him a separate message thru Discogs, 2 more days pass with no reply. What now?

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

^ Guy paid *for* a record

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 21:27 (three years ago) link

You should have his email /phone from Discogs. I’ve had to do that a couple of times.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 21:39 (three years ago) link

I always wait for a response in this case, if you really get twitchy send to the Paypal address as that gives you more protection.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 28 May 2020 10:44 (three years ago) link

I’ve had dozens of address mismatches. Sooner or later, the buyer has always replied to clarify. The split between “use the Discogs address” and “use the PayPal address” is fairly even, so it’s best not to guess. Strictly speaking, it’s better to use the PayPal address as that offers better protection, but on balance I’d rather go with the buyer’s wishes.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 28 May 2020 12:25 (three years ago) link

I asked a guy to add the address he wanted to use to his Paypal account and we re-did the transaction. He was good about it. I was surprised the other day when I came across a seller whose terms said he is going to ship to your Discogs address no matter what address is on your Paypal. Saves him from ever hanging around asking which to use, I guess.

maffew12, Thursday, 28 May 2020 12:32 (three years ago) link

I think my only negative feedback is from a time I bought a record and after the guy shipped it he messaged me saying that the record was in much worse shape than he realized and sent me a full refund. Record arrived and was indeed an unplayable G. This was when I discovered you could leave 'neutral' feedback, which I did and he got super pissed at me, flaming me that I didnt leave him good feedback even though I got a "free record". Which yeah, he sent me a piece of junk for free. Why ship the record in the first place?

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 28 May 2020 12:34 (three years ago) link

I'm surprised you were able to leave feedback on a refunded transaction.

Only negative I've left, for a buyer, was a new account ordering a pretty pricey record who I then never heard from again. The seller can close something like that only after 10 or 14 days (I forget), and it automatically gives the buyer a negative (not that it mattered on a brand new account). I wondered if it was a setup from someone looking to move the same record for more money, but I never tried looking into that. Once I got the record back on the market it sold pretty much immediately.

maffew12, Thursday, 28 May 2020 12:38 (three years ago) link

Only left non-positive feedback once on eBay years ago.

Record was sent in a large (and used) pizza box, and it was unsecured in any sense within the box. Think of your standard box for a large pizza with a crude drawing of an Italian pizza maker doing the chef's kiss, and add chilled pizza grease. Thankfully a relatively cheap record.

city worker, Thursday, 28 May 2020 15:56 (three years ago) link

I would enjoy getting a record in a pizza box. One that had never had a pizza in it, I mean. Usually when you open a pizza box and there's no pizza in it you're sad but if there's a record in there!

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Thursday, 28 May 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

guy i knew once explained to me that he would go to a local pizza chain every so often and get an armload of medium-sized pizza boxes for mailing LP boxsets.

i asked him, "really ? you send boxsets in pizza boxes ?" and he gets this look on his face, kind of mischievous, and says, "yeah man. i just love when i get to send 'em to italy."

Re: Discogs address vs Paypal address. I'd always ship to the Paypal address as Paypal are unrelenting about refunds.

michaellambert, Thursday, 28 May 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

Huh. I never ship to the paypal addresses, always the Discogs addresses. I've never had a problem but for one time a buyer put the wrong zip code in. I guess I should be asking for confirmation, but often buyers do not respond to Discogs messaging, I've found.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 28 May 2020 22:57 (three years ago) link

if a buyer asks to return something for a refund, do you guys refund them the shipping costs of sending back? discogs and paypal don't give you that option so I'd have to do it manually. I think the guy was being a putz re: grading so my petty side doesn't want to, but I'm usually not an asshole seller.

akm, Thursday, 28 May 2020 22:59 (three years ago) link

Nah man, if he's not happy with your grading, that's his issue. If you'd sent him the wrong record or something, then it would be on you.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 May 2020 23:09 (three years ago) link

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 29 May 2020 12:24 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

there goes my perfect feedback. forgot to de-list my CDs! lolz. If the buyer who wanted that Rolling Blackouts disc is on here, sorry!

brimstead, Tuesday, 16 June 2020 18:36 (three years ago) link

What's the longest after payment you would wait for the seller to ship before requesting a refund?

I'm understanding that things can be slow at the moment and not that easy, but it's now 10 days since I paid and the seller still hasn't shipped my order. I'm going to give it a couple more days but this seems like a bit of a stretch to expect me to give glowing feedback when/if I finally do get the order.

mickcsmith (micarl), Monday, 22 June 2020 07:35 (three years ago) link

I’d ask now if there’s a problem, maybe seller has been ill or some other issue, but ten days is more than enough time.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 22 June 2020 07:47 (three years ago) link

He said last Wednesday that he was waiting for packaging but I've heard nothing since.

Thinking of making my first purchase, from a seller in Japan... they joined in 2013 and their feedback is 379 (pos) / 16 (neutral) / 26 (neg). Several of the recent ratings in particular are negative, saying order never arrived, no communication, etc. If item never ships, I’ll be protected via PayPal, yeah? Should be reasonable risk(?)

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

International shipping seems to be risky right now. I buy stuff internationally as part of my day job, and since March our order completion rate is near zero. Stuff just doesn't arrive. The orders never ship, they get stuck in customs or in courier shipping centers, or get marked as delivered but are nowhere to be found.
