i feel like it's closer to their mellon collie in spirit, i get the adore comparison because of the dual electronics/folk directions they pushed in but adore still manages to be much more singular in vibe while mellon collie is the real stylistic grab bag

i keep waiting for "what should i say" to get corny the more i play it but instead i'm becoming convinced it's one of the greatest songs i've ever heard

lots of cool behind-the-scenes stuff here: https://www.mindshower.ai/ as well as stems for some of the singles

the swirling ambient synth arpeggios in "i think there's something you should know" are so loveless

really wish they'd given us the "frail state of mind" stems

I love this album but no amount of resequencing could make this album less messy, should have ended with "Don't Worry" which of course has wrecked me

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 22 May 2020 03:21 (three years ago) link

i maintain the sequencing could have at least been less jarring. "don't worry" into "guys" is a perfect way to close the album though

track-by-track notes here in the "editors's notes". matty confirms "the end" is an arrangement of "hnscc" among other tidbits

Didn’t think I liked this band, but I like this. Should I go back and revisit the two last ones?

Mule, Friday, 22 May 2020 07:45 (three years ago) link

you're asking the wrong thread, man, everyone here hates them

alpine static, Friday, 22 May 2020 07:51 (three years ago) link

me, on the other hand, i like them and i'm awake, so i'd say: yes, but don't stop at two, go for three

alpine static, Friday, 22 May 2020 07:52 (three years ago) link

don't forget the EPs

the further back you go in their albums, the more they sound like "if you're too shy" so unless you really don't like that one go for it

ufo, Friday, 22 May 2020 08:20 (three years ago) link

I am only up to "Tonight" but I already like this more than the last album, which I did like but not as much as the first two albums and mostly for the singles. I'm really impressed by the breadth but more importantly the consistency of the album tracks so far, many as strong as what's been released. it'll take a few listens to really unpack this though, given the variety and number of tracks

oh wow "Shiny Collarbone" is out there even for this album

Vinnie, Friday, 22 May 2020 09:38 (three years ago) link

omg "What Should I Say". this song is such a jam. and I'm only now realizing that the band rarely do minor key songs, right?

yes! and the debut

i actually can't think of a single minor key song they've done apart from "what should i say"

This is interesting, I really like that one. Maybe I could have liked them all along? I remember not responding to the last one at all.

Mule, Friday, 22 May 2020 11:15 (three years ago) link

Will do a review this weekend

Mule, Friday, 22 May 2020 11:16 (three years ago) link

Certainly few where it's clearly a minor key xp they have some like "Somebody Else" which are ambiguous

Vinnie, Friday, 22 May 2020 11:30 (three years ago) link

"somebody else" is lydian i think? but i'm no expert

ufo, Friday, 22 May 2020 11:36 (three years ago) link

I'm not that great with theory either but I think whether it's a major key, minor key, or Lydian mode just depends on what you think the tonic is

I listened to the singles on the last album too much before the album released and so didn't ever really come appreciate that album beyond the singles; so this time I resolved to listen to the album only come release date. all I want to say for now is that "If You're Too Shy" is excellent & the verses sound like a sped-up version of "Run Like Hell" by PINK FLOYD RULES

it doesn't get better than "you make a little hobby out of going to the lobby to get things that they don't have / does it go THROUGHYA" onwards in 'the birthday party'

whole song is perfect, but that last minute is just madness

this is how i feel, may it rip open an interdimensional genre hole that is just remixes of "sailing"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 22 May 2020 18:42 (three years ago) link

i listened to one guided by voices album like 10 years ago but "then because she goes" reminds me of them for some reason. just like this short burst of a song. it's gorgeous. also i personally think the sequencing on this is amazing lol

uberweiss, Friday, 22 May 2020 18:47 (three years ago) link

I can't imagine listening to most of this often but it's definitely impressive, they're reaaaally good stylistic mimics. I love pretty much all of the UK garage-y tracks.

'What Should I Say' feels like it was written right after hearing Kanye's 'Fade'.

'Me & You Together Song' is both fascinating & repellent as a pastiche (of what exactly, Oasis and certain '90s corporate alt-pop?), with that over-swung rhythm feel that's really gross.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 22 May 2020 19:56 (three years ago) link

i follow way too many dummies on twitter who think they're so above giving this band a chance or any positive attention

alpine static, Friday, 22 May 2020 22:53 (three years ago) link

its funny how they were too pop for the haters originally and now theyre too pretentious art rock nonsense or whatever

ufo, Saturday, 23 May 2020 00:07 (three years ago) link

I find this band to be a hard sell to my friends. listening to this album reminds me of the experience of listening to music as a teenager. not sure if those two things are related

Until now, I did not realize that Tonight also is based around a sample of Hiroshi Sato's Say Goodbye, as well as the aforementioned Temptations sample.
