The tweet from Neera Tanden (above): "I have the coronavirus. I’ve been sick for a week, and really, really fatigued, with muscle pain. So far, thankfully, no fever and my oxygen levels are fine. But I was super careful, wore masks, carried hand sanitizer. Haven’t really socialized with friends."
I haven't dwelled on such stories recently, but this will never stop baffling me.

why do you think that white people are the only ones not wearing masks and partying? where do you live? Pretty diverse group of non-mask'd people where I am hanging out!
― flappy bird, Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:08 (three years ago) link
i think something was misunderstood, which is understandable!
first, morbs asked if tulsa was the first superspreader party, so i posted the lake of the ozarks party pic, which was before tulsa. then forks remarked that there were a lot of white people in the picture. then i made a joke (a hilarious one!) about all white people actually being born in that pool, which is based off of my experiences of growing up in rural missouri and being forced to visit lake of the ozarks, which is like 96% white people iirc
― time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:39 (three years ago) link
anyway, i wasn't trying to suggest that only white people are partying and not wearing masks, although i guess it might have seemed that way

― nickn, Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:59 (three years ago) link
I don't think it's that either, like Karl said GOP skews older and whiter, but it's a really complicated situation. No one is getting consistent information, no one is giving out masks in my city, there aren't massive PSAs everywhere telling people what's safe and what's not. Trump is the biggest one to blame obviously, by going unmasked for MONTHS he's singlehandedly extended the pandemic by a significant amount. And honestly the "it doesn't protect you, it protects others" is confusing and not helpful, not because the sentiment is anathema to Americans, it sounds nonsensical to the layperson, like me, who didn't go to college.
But I am a very stupid person. I still don't understand how the mask doesn't protect me from getting the droplets but it protects others also wearing the mask from getting my droplets. But hey, whatever, I DON'T CARE, I'm wearing the mask. I haven't gotten a cold or anything since March--that never happened my whole life, I'm not putting that mask away for certain things now, ever again. But everyone has had to go through this process because there's such a deluge of information it's just exhausting and confusing.
― flappy bird, Thursday, 2 July 2020 22:17 (three years ago) link
When wearing the mask and breathing normally, you will draw in air from the gaps surrounding the mask. Now imagine that everyone is a hose with a thumb on it, spraying a widespread mist of droplets. If you walk through that mist with a mask, you'll still breath the mist in through the gaps. But imagine that you put a cap on the hose, right near the source where the water is being hurled forward, and before it can spread out into a widespread mist. You prevent the source of the dangerous widespread mist with your mask.

The pee pants analogy explains it simply enough. Two guys standing face to face - one of them pees. If he’s not wearing pants, it’s gonna hit the second guy. If he is, he just gets wet pants.
