ESPN doing back to back airings tonight of Kobe's last game (lol he just fouled nonstop and dared the refs to call it) at 9.30 pm est and the 2016 dubs' 73rd win at 7 pm est

pretty interesting listening to two espn pods recorded within days of each other:

brian windhorst/tim bontemps: the only logical decision from a timing, expense, and safety perspective is to only bring back the playoff teams.

woj/zach lowe: the nba is set on playing more games than just the playoffs, adam silver would love to do a play-in tournament, here's a byzantine idea to bring back 20 teams and have a 7-team tournament for three playoff spots.

they need to hit 70 games to meet tv contracts. this could be supported by players if it will get them paid.

micah, Thursday, 28 May 2020 00:27 (three years ago) link

ah that is an important detail!

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 May 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

the other side of that is that putting on more games means players get paid more of their salary without corresponding gate revenue. putting on games is an expense to teams and the nba. as i understand it RSN money varies wildly from team to team.

it's just really tough to figure out.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 28 May 2020 01:30 (three years ago) link

A Modest Proposal: put every player for every team in the league on one court, last man standing with the ball wins the NBA Finals. Not his team, just him.

Windhorst is bad at his job

“I'll tell you one thing: that scenario gets Zion Williamson in," added Windhorst. "Look, I've just heard... I'm not saying the NBA is going this route, I'm just saying I've already heard this scenario that no matter what happens, the cutoff line will be the Pelicans. They'll be in. It will be the first time in the history of the NBA that the league kicked the ball into the fairway for New Orleans."

"Other than vetoing the CP3 to the Lakers' trade," replied Tim MacMahon.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 28 May 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

Is Boban Marjanovic the greatest 9th man of all time?

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 29 May 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

btw i listened to that windhorst thing yesterday and from what i could tell he was relaying what other teams in the league were theorizing, not saying the nba was actually going to rig it for zion

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 May 2020 15:55 (three years ago) link

yes, that is what he was saying.

restart scenario reporting is slowly killing me; i hate it but i can't stop consuming it.

If the NBA ultimately goes this route … it would increase the number of teams invited to Orlando from 20 to 22 and add Washington and Phoenix to Portland, New Orleans, Sacramento and San Antonio https://t.co/mNnpx2bosS

Seriously though, are we really going to do this without healthy Steph and Klay? At least put Klay on the sideline beat.

DJI, Friday, 29 May 2020 21:12 (three years ago) link

Bundesliga has restarted season in empty stadiums. Without home fans, the home team has gone won just 5 of 27 matches. The NBA should take heed and make sure higher-seeded teams get homecourt edge replenished. Solution: Pick-Your-Opponent: https://t.co/ZFlpSwi7BM

Was watching some Unseld games a few months ago and he really did make a great outlet pass every time. What rodman was to rebounding that guy was to outlet passes.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

I'm not saying the Wizards should tank, but...

They have eight games remaining, all against better teams. If they go 0-8, they'd jump from No. 9 seed to No. 7 seed in lottery. That's difference between 6% and 15% chance of top-three pick.

Such a screwed-up incentive structure.
