i revisited LEGACY! LEGACY! yesterday. a complete and total masterpiece.

My friend/collaborator Arthur Brooks is selling downloads (needledrop, because the original tapes are lost) and original pressing LPs of his 1978 release Nightcaller. 100% of the proceeds go to the artist.

Apart from a few brief tracks scattered on a couple of Bill Dixon compilations, this is the only officially-released documentation of the Black Music Division at Bennington College, where Arthur taught for over 20 years. He's a trumpeter-composer, and was a member of Brute Force (album on Embryo with Sonny Sharrock), the Cecil Taylor Unit, and a number of Bill Dixon's ensembles.

Black/POC punk compilation (full disclosure, I am friends with some of the organisers): https://decolonisefest.bandcamp.com/

A whole spreadsheet somebody made of black artists: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OIUBp4kFxmpWJihhq6WLwJQR1Am4DsD59bEYlJZxeGY/htmlview?fbclid=IwAR0ji4iO4yT4DWrvvDg3hvTq0n5ux9GtS7BoGSHZbMSLBpo-lUgjodvaOvg

My band has a thread of recs for black/POC artists: don't know if this stops it from embedding?

Soundslike also has a really good thread of recs but I'll let them share it if they want to!

I just realised I left the facebook referral bit on that spreadsheet - don't kill me!

Things I have bought today:

Yazz Ahmed, When We Were Live (digital-only live EP, only available through Sunday)
Various Artists, Perihelion 2134 (name-your-price compilation from the noise/D&B label Ohm Resistance - I paid $5)
Kevin Richard Martin - Frequencies For Leaving Earth Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (dark ambient work from the Techno Animal/Zonal/The Bug dude)
Broken Shadows - Broken Shadows Live (Tim Berne, Chris Speed, Reid Anderson and Dave King playing tunes by Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Julius Hemphill)
Ill Considered - Ill Considered 8 & 9 (a dubby jazz group from London)
Bunny Lee, Prince Jammy & the Aggrovators - Dubbing In The Back Yard & Conflict Dub (two rare dub albums reissued by Pressure Sounds)
The Revolutionaries - Drum Sound & Maxfield Avenue Breakdown (two compilations of dub, also on Pressure Sounds)

I know this is insignificant by almost any measure, but because of preexisting health issues I can't physically participate during COVID. So trying to come up with a way to help, since I still (for now) have a job, and so does my wife, we are doing the following:

On 6/5, all of @Bandcamp's $ goes to artists, and on 6/19 to the @NAACP_LDF

Retweet this w/ a link to a Black artist you love on Bandcamp, and I will buy you an album + donate $10 here: https://t.co/PmLe0JwWJg

This is a thread of artists you should hear & support pic.twitter.com/xzQQH1g7Bd

— Musicophilia (@musicophiliamix) June 4, 2020

Basically:

[*] Retweet that tweet and link to a Black artist whose work you love, on Bandcamp
[*] DM me (on Twitter) with (2) albums by Black artists on Bandcamp you'd like, and an email address Bandcamp can send the download links to
[*] I'll donate $10 to bail organizations for each participant (going to donate $1,000 regardless), and a producer friend in Chicago will match in full
[*] We'll buy you the two albums you want

Hope some people here can participate/spread the word. We've gotten about 25 participants so far, hoping for another 75

Dang, can't even *give away* music to people on a messageboard called "I Love Music"? ; )

Come on folks, share and hit me up over on twitter--we're at about 35x2 albums bought so far, trying to get another 65x2...

If you can spread the word on other social media, I'm completely for that. Don't love twitter, but find it has more musicians and a higher discourse (if you follow/are followed by the right people) than Facebook, and IG feels like it's just for posting selfies. Whatever gets support to the artists, I'm down.

To my amazement the out-of-print This Heat box set (limited to 1000) Out of Cold Storage is available on Bandcamp as a physical box set with digital download. The box set costs $2 less than the digital-only version. Guess which one I bought.

that is awesome, such great music

sleeve, Saturday, 6 June 2020 04:02 (three years ago) link

Their pricing is bizarre - OOCS includes all the albums and EPs, but it's $70 for the digital only, $68 for the physical box set plus full digital - or for the connoisseur, buy the digital box plus digital releases of all the material already in the box for $74 - 45% off!

dammit, i really did not log on tonight planning to spend $70 on a This Heat box set in a dead format

alpine static, Saturday, 6 June 2020 05:00 (three years ago) link

With inflation, I gotta think that makes it cheaper than in 2004 or 2006 or whenever that box came out. Although I don't actually remember what it cost...

I'm so happy to say that with <1 day notice before the 6/5 "Bandcamp Day," we managed to get 36 folks participate, buying 72 albums so far, with a further $1k donation so far. Another $1,000 coming, and trying for another 60+ people who want albums, for the Juneteenth "Bandcamp Day". It's a small thing, I know, but given preexisting health concerns prevent my participating more directly during COVID-19, I'm glad I could do *something*.

Rough Trade Publishing/Bank Robber Music

This is incredible. We cannot thank each and every one of you enough. In one day we raised over $12,000 for Black Visions Collective!

sleeve, Saturday, 6 June 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

This Friday, 6/19--Juneteenth--Bandcamp is directing their usual 10%-15% from all sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund! To support that initiative, to support Black artists, and to support direct day-to-day needs in the struggle for justice and equity for all Black people, I'm doing a small effort via my Musicophilia blog, per the below.

Basically, you share the below tweet and point people to a (or many) favorite Black artists on Bandcamp, and me and Chicago producer Mike Schpitz will buy you (2) albums by Black artists of your choice on Bandcamp, and donate $20 in your honor to the organizations in the link below. I hope you'll join in, and spread the word!

So far on June 5th (when Bandcamp ran a similar initiative, with all money going directly to artists/labels), we heard from 36 people, bought 72 albums/eps, and donated $1,000. We're hoping to get to +/- 200, and will be donating another $1,000 no matter what.

On 6/19, Juneteenth, @Bandcamp's % goes to the @NAACP_LDF

RT this thread w/ a link to a Black artist's work you love on Bandcamp, and @MikeSchpitz and I will buy you 2 digital albums + send $20 here: https://t.co/PmLe0JwWJg

FREE MUSIC, folks--please don't hesitate to join in! No catches, just trying to get artists paid and get folks to take a low-risk chance on some new music.

Soundslike, Thursday, 18 June 2020 21:55 (three years ago) link

OK--today's the day! Don't be shy! There's no catch--I'm just trying to A) help Black artists get some much needed $ during the age of Spotify paying nothing and COVID ending shows; and B) help music lovers hear stuff they'll like and hopefully support going forward. (2) FREE ALBUMS of your choice, and we'll donate $20 to organizations that really need it!

hm, the This Heat box arrived and it’s a black card box with an inkjet of the front and back covers stuck on by hand. CDs and book are all present and correct, but it’s not the box they showed on the site. I guess I’m glad to support them though. As long as it *is* them of course.

That's a bit shoddy. Is the version you have on Discogs? I'd feel inclined to add it so people know.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 2 July 2020 10:58 (three years ago) link

I've wondered in the past about some reissues with no real indication they're legit. Anyone know how much checking there is behind the scenes for that sort of thing?

(There are two editions of Abfahrt Hinwil - Links Berge Rechts Seen on bandcamp and I guess I should not be a cheapskate even though I only want a digital copy and buy the one with more "deluxe anniversary vinyl repressing" type details rather than the cheaper electronic-only one with no blurb, just to be slightly more sure some of my cash is going to the right people.

Also a couple of years back a bandcamp popped up promising Solid Space Space Museum vinyl preorders and it was frustrating because I wanted one but up to that point word had been that the people involved didn't want anything to do with it and it would never see the light of day officially, and I didn't want to give money to bootleggers - I passed on it and happily it now has a legit reissue through Dark Entries)

i posted this to my twitter as part of soundslike's dealio, but i'll reup it here too in the name of being thorough: https://windimoto.bandcamp.com/album/dvs-4-alderman-bandcamp-exclusive-expanded-edition — it's awesome chicago hiphop by a bunch of guys who just love the music. my friend greg (treblefree) did a chunk of the production on it and he's one of the tightest hiphop producers i've ever heard. i'm not just saying because i know him; his stuff is extremely top gear.

also check the other releases on the proper windimoto bandcamp for some bubbling house grooves: https://windimoto.bandcamp.com

he passed away a couple years ago, but sean haley's solo album is still worthwhile and he was a chicago icon: https://windimoto.bandcamp.com/album/ronin-the-journey-of-the-lost-warrior

i feel like a shitheel for posting this because i make an appearance on the album, but you can get treblefree's super fun hiphop album from many years back. it's just a lot of detroit and chicago guys doing what they love: https://treblefree.bandcamp.com/album/the-return-of-the-dirty-cymbals (he also has a few other archival kind of things posted)

there's also treblefree and dvs' collaborative group, waldorf & statler. my favorite thing of theirs is
Nigga I Know James!!!
which is made up of all james brown samples. super fun stuff, but they have most of the releases on free download, obviously to avoid any legalities. but they do have volume four on name your price, if you feel so compelled.

anyway. long post. sorry.
